A study of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of waters from ten channel catfish ponds at Auburn, Alabama, revealed that the 5-d BOD (BOD5) seldom exceeded 8 mg/L and that the ultimate BOD (BODu) was usually less than 30 mg/L. Water samples from catfish ponds usually needed to be diluted only 2 or 3 times to permit BOD5 measurements, and nitrification occurred even during a 5-d incubation period. Catfish pond waters were not extremely high in ammonia nitrogen concentration, and ammonia nitrogen introduced in the ammonium chloride-enriched dilution water caused an appreciable increase in BOD of some samples. Plankton respiration is a major component of carbonaceous BOD (CBOD) in catfish pond waters. Thus, the BOD is not expressed as rapidly during 5-d incubations as in typical waste-water. The ultimate BOD (BODu) would be a good measurement of oxygen demand for catfish pond effluents, but it is difficult to measure. Data from this study suggest that BODu can be estimated from BOD5, but the correlation is not strong ( R 2= 0.62). An alternative is to develop a short-term BOD measurement specifically for effluents from channel catfish and other aquaculture ponds. This study suggests that a 10-d BOD conducted without nitrification inhibition or addition of ammonia nitrogen in dilution water might be a better alternative to standard BOD5 or BODu measurements normally used in wastewater evaluation.  相似文献

We investigated whether Fraser strain Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus L. reared in fresh water (FW) differed in survival and growth from full siblings transferred to brackish water (BW) and whether family performance was consistent throughout 1 year of commercial growth. Fish were grown communally (n = 3600) in either FW or BW from May 2008 to May 2009. Mean family survival in BW was moderately correlated with mean family survival in FW (= 0.342; = 0.032). Fish which survived until the conclusion of the experiment were significantly heavier in body weight at the baseline assessment than their full‐sibs which died. Family by treatment interactions were detected for body weight, condition factor and specific growth across all measurement dates (May 2008, October 2008 and May 2009) and growth intervals. Despite the varied response of families to treatment, mean family body weight in FW was correlated phenotypically with BW body weight in October 2008 (= 0.633, < 0.0001) and marginally correlated in May 2009 (= 0.289, = 0.061). These data suggest that body weight in FW and body weight in BW should be analysed as separate, but correlated traits in Arctic charr breeding programs.  相似文献

This paper discusses a procedure involving absorption of NO2 on triethanolamine impregnated-papers according to a recent study of Levaggi, Siu and Feldstein. The used solid surfaces are Millipore filters, first impregnated by stirring them in a solution containing triethanolamine, glycerol and acetone before drying in an oven. Storage is made in a closed glass container. For sampling, check air flow rate to be about 30 l h?1 through filters. The sampling time depends on the actual concentration. Samples are then analyzed in a laboratory under Saltzman's colorimetric reaction. The composition of the reagents is slightly modificated (acetic acid is replaced by phosphoric acid to obtain pH 1). Color development needs 30 min and then absorbance is compared with a standardization curve built from dilute solutions of Na NO2. Absorption efficiencies of over 95% are attained with two impregnated filters in a filter holder and at about 301 h?1 flow rate. Stability of filters after sampling is evaluated at 2 or 3 weeks, so it is possible to store several filters before sending them (for example by mail) to the laboratory for analysis. The stoichiometric factor depends on the weight (expressed in μg) of NO2 collected on the filters and varies between 1.0 and 0.84. To measure NO, oxidation into NO2 is first required, for example with an O3 lamp.  相似文献

The biochemical processes underlying the expression of resistance in the roots of Medicago truncatula against Aphanomyces euteiches infection was investigated, with emphasis on oxidative stress. The levels of H2O2, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, soluble phenolics and lignin were measured in the roots of two lines, A17 partially resistant and F83005.5 susceptible to A. euteiches at three infection stages; penetration of the epidermis (1 dpi), colonization of the cortex (3 dpi) and invasion of the root stele (6 dpi). A rapid and large decrease of the H2O2 levels in A17 roots occurred. However, in F83005.5 roots, the decrease in H2O2 levels was delayed until 3 dpi. In A17 roots, the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase and catalase were induced as early as 1 dpi, whereas a general decrease in the activity of the four antioxidant enzymes was observed in F83005.5 roots. The levels of soluble phenolics and lignin were increased in A17 roots at 3 and 6 dpi, respectively. The H2O2 levels were negatively correlated to ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and lignin production at 1, 3 and 6 dpi, respectively in A17 roots. Physiological concentrations of H2O2 found in M. truncatula infected roots had no detrimental effect on the in vitro growth of this oomycete. Our data suggest that H2O2 does not have a direct antimicrobial effect on M. truncatula resistance to A. euteiches, but is involved in cell wall strengthening around the root stele, preventing pathogen invasion of the vascular tissues.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Symphylids (Hanseniella sp.) are polyphagous soilborne parasites. Today, symphylid populations on pineapple are monitored by observing root symptoms and the presence of symphylids at the bottom of basal leaves. The authors developed a reliable method with a bait and trap device to monitor symphylid populations in pineapple or fallow crops. The spatial distribution of the symphylid populations was evaluated using the variance/mean ratios and spatial analyses based on Moran's and Geary's indices. The method has been tested to monitor symphylid populations at different developmental stages of pineapple. RESULTS: Adding potato baits to the soil samples increased the trapping efficiency of symphylids when compared with ‘soil only’ and ‘bait only’ methods. The handling of the samples is also facilitated by the new device. Results showed that the vertical distribution of symphylids may be uniform deeply inside the soil profile under pineapple, up to 50 cm. Results showed that symphylid populations are highly aggregated, showing a spot area about 4–6 m wide for their development. CONCLUSION: The new method allows better and easier evaluation of symphylid populations. It may be very useful in the evaluation of new IPM methods to control symphylids under pineapple. In Switzerland, group-housing for breeding rabbit does is not explicitly required by law, but label programmes, as well as the general public and animal welfare groups, are advocating it. Although group-housing is of great benefit to the gregariously living rabbits, the establishment of a social hierarchy within the group might lead to stress and lesions. In the present epidemiological study, lesions were scored twice on 30% of the breeding does on all 28 commercial Swiss farms with group-housed breeding does. Additionally, a detailed questionnaire was filled out with all producers to determine risk factors potentially associated with lesions. Data were analysed using hierarchical proportional odds models. About 33% of the does examined had lesions, including wounds that were almost healed and small scratches. Severe lesions were counted on 9% of the animals. Differences between seasons in lesions score were identified, with the extent of lesions being higher in summer than in spring. Fewer lesions occurred on farms on which mastitis was more common. More lesions were found on farms where the does were isolated between littering and artificial insemination than on farms without isolation. According to the producers, most of the aggression occurred directly after the isolation phase when the does were regrouped again. We conclude that lesions in group-housed breeding does might be reduced by appropriate reproductive management.  相似文献
