Recent studies have identified a phenomenon in which ciliated protozoa engulf Salmonella and the intra-protozoal environment hyperactivates virulence gene expression and provides a venue for conjugal transfer of antibiotic resistance plasmids. The former observation is relegated to Salmonella bearing the SGI1 multiresistance integron while the latter phenomenon appears to be a more generalized event for recipient Salmonella. Our previous studies have assessed virulence gene hyperexpression only with protozoa from the bovine rumen while conjugal transfer has been demonstrated in rumen protozoa from cattle and goats. The present study examined virulence gene hyperexpression for Salmonella exposed to rumen protozoa obtained from cattle, sheep, goats, or two African ruminants (giraffe and bongo). Conjugal transfer was also assessed in these protozoa using Salmonella as the recipient. Virulence gene hyperexpression was only observed following exposure to the rumen protozoa from cattle and sheep while elevated virulence was also observed in these animals. Conjugal transfer events were, however, observed in all protozoa evaluated. It therefore appears that the protozoa-based hypervirulence is not universal to all ruminants while conjugal transfer is more ubiquitous.  相似文献

An 8-year-old, female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a ventral abdominal subcutaneous mass. A radiograph showed that the center of the mass contained what appeared to be steel sutures, presumed to be from an ovariohysterectomy performed 7 years earlier. The excised mass was irregular and contained numerous pockets filled with friable necrotic material and hemorrhages that were dissected by fibrous connective tissue bands. Multiple tangled and fragmented pieces of steel staples were deeply embedded within the mass. Histologically, the mass was non-encapsulated, densely cellular, and infiltrative. Neoplastic cells lined caverns and channels and were factor VIII-positive by immunohistochemistry. The neoplastic cells were oval to round with granular cytoplasm and vesicular nucleus and exhibited moderate cellular and nuclear pleomorphism. A diagnosis of subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report of foreign body associated hemangiosarcoma and the first case of steel staple associated neoplasm in domestic animals.  相似文献

Abstract – In laboratory and field studies of survival, one of two alternative analytical techniques is often used to estimate survival rates and identify covariates, namely parametric survival analysis or Cormack–Jolly–Seber models. These techniques differ in algorithms and assumptions of the data. They also tend to be used under different circumstances depending on whether the intention is to demonstrate group‐specific differences or to predict survival variables. Here, we apply and compare both analytical techniques in a study that couples functional genomics with biotelemetry to ascertain the role of physiological condition on survival of adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) migrating in the Fraser River, British Columbia, which builds on the growing concern over the decline in numbers of spawning fish. Herein, we show a high level of quantitative and qualitative agreement between the two analytical methods, with both showing a strong relationship exists between the genomic signature that accounts for the largest source of variance in gene expression among individuals and survival in one of the three populations assessed. This high level of agreement suggests the data and the approaches are generating reliable results. The novel approach used in our study to identify physiological processes associated with reduced fitness in wild populations should be of broad interest to conservation biologists and resource managers as it may help reduce the uncertainty associated with predicting population sizes.  相似文献

Two strains of hybrid chicks (hybrids A and B) were tested for susceptibility to aflatoxin poisoning by single dose administration and by feeding trials. Hybrid A was found to be much more susceptible to aflatoxin than hybrid B.

The effect of aflatoxin poisoning on the serum proteins of day‐old chicks of hybrids A and B and of Rhode Red x Light Sussex chicks was examined in survivors 7 days after administering one LD50 of aflatoxin B1. No consistent alterations in electrophoretic protein patterns or serum glycoprotein contents were observed but in the most susceptible group (hybrid A) there was a 12.5 per cent reduction in total protein content.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the elimination kinetics of chlorhexidine in milk when used as an intramammary infusion to stop lactation in cows. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 6 cows. PROCEDURE: The study was performed in 2 phases. Three cows were studied in each phase. All cows were treated with chlorhexidine suspension by infusion into a mastitic mammary gland quarter after 2 milkings 24 hours apart. Foremilk samples (100 mL) were collected from treated and untreated (controls) mammary gland quarters of each cow. Chlorhexidine was extracted from raw milk, and residue concentrations were quantified by use of high-performance liquid chromatography. Foremilk samples from days 2, 5, and 8 were analyzed in phase I, and samples from time 0 and days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 were analyzed in phase II. RESULTS: In phases I and II, there was no quantifiable transference of chlorhexidine to milk in untreated mammary gland quarters. Measurable chlorhexidine residues were found in milk from treated mammary gland quarters of 2 cows throughout the 42-day sample period in phase II. Estimated mean elimination half-life for chlorhexidine in milk was 11.5 days. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: On the basis of the long elimination half-life of chlorhexidine in milk from treated mammary gland quarters, the lack of human dietary exposure data to suggest a food tolerance for chlorhexidine in food products, and the Food and Drug Administration's published zero tolerance for chlorhexidine in uncooked edible calf tissues, we do not recommend extralabel use of chlorhexidine suspension as a treatment to stop lactation in mastitic mammary gland quarters of cows.  相似文献

Methods were developed to determine OH reaction rates for medium-weight organophosphorus pesticides in the gas phase. A 57-L chamber was constructed that utilized xenon arc irradiation (>290 nm) to photolyze the OH precursor, methyl nitrite. Experiments were performed at elevated temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees C to minimize wall sorption. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) sampling of the gas phase was employed to assess the simultaneous rate of loss of the pesticides in relation to the rate of loss of two reference substances with known OH rate constants. An internal gas-phase standard (hexachlorobenzene), relatively stable to hydroxyl radicals, was used to assess other processes, which included dilution and wall sorption. The relative reaction rates of the organophosphorus insecticides, diazinon and chlorpyrifos, when compared to reference compounds, were unaffected by various air temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees C. Although both insecticides were expected to react at similar rates on the basis of structural activity model predictions, diazinon reacted 3 times more rapidly than chlorpyrifos and gave estimated environmental OH half-lives of 0.5 and 1.4 h, respectively. The degree of sorption onto the chamber walls was minimal and similar for each of the compounds examined. Experimental gas-phase determinations at elevated temperatures may provide important information that can be used when in the assessment of the potential of airborne pesticide risks to nontarget and ecologically sensitive areas.  相似文献
