The proteins of wheat have a known propensity to aggregate into a variety of forms. We report here a novel nanostructure from wheat proteins, derived from a crude extract of high molecular weight glutenins. The structure was characterised by a significant thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence and a fibrillar morphology by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ThT fluorescence and TEM data are suggestive of an amyloid structure, but the X-ray fibre diffraction data show a reflection pattern (4.02, 4.2–4.3, 4.6, 12.9, 19.3 and 38.7 Å) inconsistent with both the classic amyloid form and the previously described β-helix structure. The 4.6 Å reflection is consistent with that predicted for the amyloid inter-β-strand, and the absence of the inter-β-sheet distance at ≈10–11 Å is not unprecedented in amyloid-like structures. However, our observed X-ray reflection pattern has not been previously reported and suggests a novel wheat glutenin nanostructure. 相似文献

In model terrestrial ecosystems maintained for three plant generations at elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, increases in photosynthetically fixed carbon were allocated below ground, raising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in soil. These effects were then transmitted up the decomposer food chain. Soil microbial biomass was unaffected, but the composition of soil fungal species changed, with increases in rates of cellulose decomposition. There were also changes in the abundance and species composition of Collembola, fungal-feeding arthropods. These results have implications for long-term feedback processes in soil ecosystems that are subject to rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. 相似文献

An experiment in an oil field at Rangely, Colorado, has demonstrated the feasibility of earthquake control. Variations in seismicity were produced by controlled variations in the fluid pressure in a seismically active zone. Precise earthquake locations revealed that the earthquakes clustered about a fault trending through a zone of high pore pressure produced by secondary recovery operations. Laboratory measurements of the frictional properties of the reservoir rocks and an in situ stress measurement made near the earthquake zone were used to predict the fluid pressure required to trigger earthquakes on preexisting fractures. Fluid pressure was controlled by alternately injecting and recovering water from wells that penetrated the seismic zone. Fluid pressure was monitored in observation wells, and a computer model of the reservoir was used to infer the fluid pressure distributions in the vicinity of the injection wells. The results of this experiment confirm the predicted effect of fluid pressure on earthquake activity and indicate that earthquakes can be controlled wherever we can control the fluid pressure in a fault zone. 相似文献

Endotoxin-free thymosin fraction 5 elevated corticotropin, beta-endorphin, and cortisol in a dose- and time-dependent fashion when administered intravenously to prepubertal cynomolgus monkeys. Two synthetic component peptides of thymosin fraction 5 had no acute effects on pituitary function, suggesting that some other peptides in thymosin fraction 5 were responsible for its corticotropin-releasing activity. In agreement with these observations, total thymectomy of juvenile macaques was associated with decreases in plasma cortisol, corticotropin, and beta-endorphin. These findings indicate that the prepubertal primate thymus contains corticotropin-releasing activity that may contribute to a physiological immunoregulatory circuit between the developing immunological and pituitary-adrenal systems. 相似文献
