SUSCEPTIBILITY ARTIFACTS ON T2*‐WEIGHTED MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF THE CANINE AND FELINE SPINE

The T2*‐weighted gradient recalled echo sequence is a sensitive means to detect blood degradation products. While not a routine sequence in magnetic resonance imaging of the spine in small animals, it can provide additional valuable information in select cases. The goal of this retrospective, cross‐sectional study was to describe findings when acquiring this sequence during magnetic resonance imaging examination of the spine in small animals. The University of Tennessee's veterinary radiology database was searched for dogs and cats that underwent magnetic resonance imaging for suspect spinal disease in which a T2*‐weighted gradient recalled echo sequence was acquired and susceptibility artifact was identified. The following information was recorded: signalment, clinical signs, location and appearance of susceptibility artifact, and final diagnosis. Thirty‐nine cases were included in the study. Extradural susceptibility artifacts were observed in cases of intervertebral disc herniation with or without associated hemorrhage (n = 28), extradural hemorrhage associated with spinal trauma (n = 2), hemophilia (n = 1), and in a cystic extradural mass (n = 1). Remaining lesions displaying susceptibility artifact were intramedullary and included presumptive acute noncompressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (n = 2), hematoma (n = 1), hemangiosarcoma metastasis (n = 1), intramedullary disc extrusion (n = 1), presumptive meningomyelitis (n = 1), and a mass of undetermined etiology (n = 1). Inclusion of a T2*‐weighted gradient recalled echo sequence may be helpful in spinal magnetic resonance imaging when standard imaging sequences are ambiguous or intramedullary lesions are observed. 相似文献

Three adult Pomeranian dogs, full siblings from 2 litters, were diagnosed with primary hypoadrenocorticism following onset of hypoadrenal crisis. Review of the family history revealed the dogs’ maternal grandmother also had hypoadrenocorticism. All 4 dogs were pedigree-certified by the American Kennel Club. An inherited basis for hypoadrenocorticism is proposed in these Pomeranian dogs. 相似文献

Enhancement of extra‐ocular muscles has been reported in cases of orbital pathology in both veterinary and medical magnetic resonance imaging. We have also observed this finding in the absence of orbital disease. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe extra‐ocular muscle contrast enhancement characteristics in a group of dogs with no known orbital disease. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) from dogs with no clinical evidence of orbital disease and a reportedly normal MRI study were retrieved and reviewed. Contrast enhancement percentages of the medial, lateral, ventral, and dorsal rectus muscles were calculated based on signal‐to‐noise ratios that were in turn determined from hand‐traced regions of interest in precontrast, immediate postcontrast and 10‐min postcontrast scans. Comparison measurements were made in the pterygoid muscle. Contrast enhancement of the extra‐ocular muscles was observed in all patients (median contrast enhancement percentage 45.0%) and was greater than that of pterygoid muscle (median contrast enhancement percentage 22.7%). Enhancement of the extra‐ocular muscles persisted 10 min after contrast administration (median contrast enhancement percentage 43.4%). Findings indicated that MRI contrast enhancement of extra‐ocular muscles is likely normal in dogs. 相似文献

Growth, carcass traits, and selected reproductive characteristics were evaluated in prepubertal gilts treated with either a constant mass of pGH or a mass of pGH adjusted periodically for changes in BW. Gilts (64 kg, n = 24) were given 24 daily injections of either vehicle (C; control) or one of two doses of pGH: 70 micrograms/kg of BW, with dose adjusted every 5th d for changes in BW (A; adjusted), or 70 micrograms/kg of initial BW (U; unadjusted). Gilts were slaughtered on d 25. Gilts treated with pGH had higher ADG (P less than .002) and improved feed efficiency (kg of feed/kg of gain; P = .0003) compared with controls. Weights of adrenal glands, liver, heart, and kidney were higher (all P less than .01) for Groups A and U than for Group C gilts. Average backfat thickness was less (P less than .004) for A and U gilts than for C gilts and less for Group A than for Group U (P less than .02). Furthermore, growth and carcass traits were similar (P greater than .05) for Groups A and U, except for measurements of first rib backfat, last rib backfat, and average backfat depth (P less than .05). Culture of granulosa cells (GC) was employed to assess ovarian function. Addition of FSH to the culture media enhanced secretion of progesterone (P4) by cultured GC from all in vivo treatments compared with unsupplemented cultures of GC (P less than .05). Computed tomography was performed on the head of 6 normal adult llamas. The animals were under general anesthesia and positioned in dorsal recumbency on the scanning table. The area scanned was from the external occipital protuberance to the rostral portion of the nasal passage, and the images are presented in both a bone window and a soft tissue window to allow evaluation and identification of the anatomy of the head. Computed tomography of the llama head can be accomplished by most computed tomography scanners utilizing a technique similar to that used in small animals with minor modification of the scanning table. 相似文献

This paper aims to clarify the genetic mechanism that is responsible for the accumulation of cannabigerol (CBG) in certain
phenotypes of Cannabis sativa L. CBG is the direct precursor of the cannabinoids CBD, THC and CBC. Plants strongly predominant in CBG have been found in
different fibre hemp accessions. Inbred offspring derived from one such individual were crossed with true breeding THC predominant-
and CBD predominant plants, respectively. The segregations in the cross progenies indicate that CBG accumulation is due to
the homozygous presence of a minimally functional allele, tentatively called B0, at the single locus B that normally controls the conversion of CBG into THC (allele BT) and/or CBD (allele BD). The fact that CBG accumulating plants have so far been found in European fibre hemp populations that are generally composed
of BD/BD plants, and the observation that the here investigated B0 allele possesses a residual ability to convert small amounts of CBG into CBD, make it plausible that this B0 is a mutation of normally functional BD. Many metropolitan school districts worldwide operate bus fleets with older diesel school buses. Emission reduction strategies such as the diesel retrofits promise substantial reductions in particulate mass emissions for older diesel engines. Recent studies suggest, however, that particle number concentration is a more important factor than particle mass in developing emissions standards and predicting adverse health effects. In-vehicle particle number concentration measurements on clean diesel, retrofitted diesel, and non-retrofitted diesel school buses were compared to estimate retrofit effectiveness in reducing in-vehicle passenger particle exposures. The retrofits were shown to provide a 15% to 26% decrease in in-vehicle particle number concentration levels between the retrofitted and non-retrofitted buses. Furthermore, the retrofitted diesel buses had average in-vehicle particle number concentrations near the average concentrations for the newer model, clean diesel buses. The average particle number concentrations for the non-retrofitted diesel buses were 1.5 to 2 times higher than the concentration measured from the retrofitted diesel buses. Moreover, a two-fold increase was observed for the morning commute samples over the afternoon commuter samples. Particle number concentrations were also significantly affected by engine age, bus idling behavior, and ambient particle concentrations along bus routes. 相似文献
