Currently, nutritional management is recommended when serum creatinine (Cr) exceeds 1.4 mg/dl in dogs with IRIS‐Stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD) to slow progressive loss of kidney function, reduce clinical and biochemical consequences of CKD, and maintain adequate nutrition. It is unknown if dietary interventions benefit non‐azotemic dogs at earlier stages. A prospective 12‐month feeding trial was performed in client‐owned dogs with IRIS‐Stage 1 CKD (n = 36; 20 had persistently dilute urine with urine specific gravity (USG) <1.020 without identifiable non‐renal cause; six had persistent proteinuria of renal origin with urine protein creatinine (UPC) ratio >0.5; 10 had both). Ease of transition to therapeutic renal food and effects on renal biomarkers and quality of life attributes were assessed. Dogs were transitioned over 1 week from grocery‐branded foods to renal food. At 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12‐months a questionnaire to assess owner's perception of their pet's acceptance of renal food and quality of life was completed. Renal biomarkers, including serum Cr, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and USG and UPC ratio were measured. Of 36 dogs initially enrolled, 35 (97%) dogs were transitioned to therapeutic renal food. Dogs moderately or extremely liked the food 88% of the time, ate most or all of the food 84% of the time, and were moderately or extremely enthusiastic while eating 76% of the time. All renal biomarkers (Cr, BUN, and SDMA) were decreased ( .05) from baseline at 3‐months, and remained decreased from baseline at 12‐months in dogs completing the study (n = 20). Proteinuria was reduced in 12 of 16 dogs (= .045) with proteinuria. Owners reported improvement in overall health and quality of life attributes, and hair and coat quality (all < .01). In summary, dogs with IRIS‐Stage 1 CKD readily transition to renal food. Decreasing serum biomarker concentrations and reduction in proteinuria suggest stabilized kidney function.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of PGF2α for oestrus synchronization (ES) in Awassi ewes to which were administered the progestagen–PMSG combination, and to evaluate the effect of the exogenous GnRH administration immediately after the artificial insemination (AI) on their pregnancy rate and lambing performance during the breeding season. The ewes (n = 33) were treated with an intravaginal sponge impregnated with 30 mg fluorogestane acetate for 12 days and were injected with 500 IU PMSG at the time of removal of the sponge. The ewes were then divided into three equal groups of 11 ewes each. One millilitre of physiological saline (0.9% NaCl; placebo) was administered to each ewe in Group 1 at the time of second AI. Approximately 4 μg GnRH (busereline) was injected to each ewe in Group 2 immediately after second AI. A total of 150 μg PGF2α (cloprostenole) was injected at the time of sponge removal on day 12 and 4 μg GnRH immediately after the second AI was also treated to each ewe in Group 3. Intracervical AI with diluted fresh semen was performed twice at 12 and 24 h following the onset of oestrus. The injection‐oestrus onset and injection‐oestrus‐end interval in Group 3 was significantly (p < 0.001) shorter than both Groups 1 and 2. Although the pregnancy rates of Groups 2 and 3 (81.8%; 9/11) were numerically higher than of Group 1 (63.6%; 7/11), the difference among the groups was statistically insignificant. The multiple birth rate of Group 3 was found higher than Groups 1 and 2. However, the number of single lambs of Group 1 was also higher than Groups 2 and 3 (p < 0.05). Despite the litter sizes of Groups 2 (1.27; 14/11) and 3 (1.55; 17/11) being numerically higher than Group 1 (0.73; 8/11), the differences among all the groups were statistically insignificant. In conclusion, the administration of PGF2α at the time of removal of the sponge shortens the injection oestrus‐onset and oestrus‐end interval in Awassi ewes treated with progestagen–PMSG. Additionally, exogenous GnRH treatment immediately after the AI increases the multiple birth rate of Awassi ewes synchronized with progestagen–PMSG–PGF2α combination.  相似文献

If supplemental minerals are needed to promote optimal animal performance, what is the best way of providing them: free choice or in the diet? We hypothesized that herbivores discriminate among feeds containing Na, P, and Ca and modify their choices as a function of need. One group of lambs was fed a basal diet low in P and high in Ca (low P-high Ca), whereas another group was fed a basal diet high in P and low in Ca (high P-low Ca). After 73 d of exposure to the unbalanced diets, the lambs were conditioned by offering flavored grape pomace containing NaCl, CaCO(3), or NaH(2)PO(4). Preference for pomace + minerals was determined when all lambs were fed a basal diet of alfalfa pellets and barley grain (initial preference) and during 4 phases. Phases 1 and 2 occurred after 40 and 67 d of feeding the unbalanced basal diets, phase 3 occurred after conditioning with NaCl, CaCO(3), or NaH(2)PO(4), and phase 4 occurred 22 d after the groups were moved to 2 new (separate) locations so the animals in the different groups could not eat dirt, urine, or feces from the other pen. Preference for pomace did not differ between the groups during the initial preference tests (P = 0.62); both groups preferred NaCl > CaCO(3) = NaH(2)PO(4) (P < 0.001). As the study progressed, and lambs fed low P-high Ca had lower P and greater Ca concentrations in serum than lambs fed high P-low Ca (P < 0.001), the preference between groups diverged. In phase 2, lambs in high P-low Ca continued to prefer NaCl (P < 0.001), but lambs in low P-high Ca preferred NaH(2)PO(4) (P < 0.05). After conditioning, both groups preferred NaCl = NaH(2)PO(4) > CaCO(3) (P < 0.01 to 0.11). After the groups were moved to different locations, lambs fed low P-high Ca showed the lowest concentration (3.7 mg/dL) of inorganic P in serum for all phases (P < 0.001), and they preferred NaH(2)PO(4) > NaCl = CaCO(3) (P < 0.001). In contrast, lambs in high P-low Ca avoided NaH(2)PO(4) (P < 0.05). Lambs offered high P-low Ca showed a greater preference for CaCO(3) (P = 0.12) and NaCl (P < 0.05) and a lower preference for NaH(2)PO(4) compared with lambs fed low P-high Ca (P < 0.001). In summary, lambs discriminated among different flavored feeds containing NaCl, CaCO(3), and NaH(2)PO(4) and displayed preferences as a function of the mineral imbalance in their basal diets. Thus, it may be possible to feed Ca and P supplements free choice, such that individual animals within a group can manifest preferences based on their specific needs.  相似文献
