Objective—To determine the safety and efficacy of propofol, after detomidine-butorphanol premedication, for induction and anesthetic maintenance for carotid artery translocation and castration or ovariectomy in goats. Study Design—Case series. Animals—Nine 4-month-old Spanish goats (17.1 ± 2.6 kg) were used to evaluate propofol anesthesia for carotid artery translocation and castration or ovariectomy. Methods—Goats were premedicated with detomidine (10 μg/kg intramuscularly [IM]) and butorphanol (0.1 mg/kg IM) and induced with an initial bolus of propofol (3 to 4 mg/kg intravenously [IV]). If necessary for intubation, additional propofol was given in 5-mg (IV) increments. Propofol infusion (0.3 mg/kg/min IV) was used to maintain anesthesia, and oxygen was insufflated (5 L/min). The infusion rate was adjusted to maintain an acceptable anesthetic plane as determined by movement, muscle relaxation, ocular signs, response to surgery, and cardiopulmonary responses. Systolic (SAP), mean (MAP) and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressures, heart rate (HR), ECG, respiratory rate (RR), Spo2, and rectal temperature (T) were recorded every 5 minutes postinduction; arterial blood gas samples were collected every 15 minutes. Normally distributed data are represented as mean ± SD; other data are medians (range). Results—Propofol (4.3 ± 0.9 mg/kg IV) produced smooth, rapid (15.2 ± 6 sec) sternal recumbency. Propofol infusion (0.52 ± 0.11 mg/kg/min IV) maintained anesthesia. Mean anesthesia time was 83 ± 15 minutes. Muscle relaxation was good; eye signs indicated surgical anesthesia; two goats moved before surgery began; one goat moved twice during laparotomy. Means are reported over the course of the data collection period. Means during the anesthesia for pHa (arterial PH), Paco2, Pao2, HCO3, and BE (base excess) ranged from 7.233 ± 0.067 to 7.319 ± 0.026, 54.1 ± 4.6 to 65.3 ± 12.0 mm Hg, 133.1 ± 45.4 to 183.8 ± 75.1 mm Hg, 26.9 ± 2.6 to 28.2 ± 2.1 mEq/L, and -0.8 ± 2.9 to 1.4 ± 2.2 mEq/L. Means over time for MAP were 53 ± 12 to 85 ± 21 mm Hg. Mean HR varied over time from 81 ± 6 to 91 ± 11 beats/minute; mean RR, from 9 ± 8 to 15 ± 5 breaths/minute; Spo2, from 97 ± 3% to 98 ± 3%; mean T, from 36.0 ± 0.6±C to 39.1 ± 0.7±C. Over time, Spo2 and Sao2 did not change significantly; HR, RR, T, and Paco2 decreased significantly; SAP, DAP, MAP, pHa, Pao2, and BE increased significantly. HCO3 concentrations increased significantly, peaking at 45 minutes. Recoveries were smooth and rapid; the time from the end of propofol infusion to extubation was 7.3 ± 3 minutes, to sternal was 9.2 ± 5 minutes, and to standing was 17.7 ± 4 minutes. Median number of attempts to stand was two (range of one to four). Postoperative pain was mild to moderate. Conclusions—Detomidine-butorphanol-propofol provided good anesthesia for carotid artery translocation and neutering in goats. Clinical Relevance—Detomidine-butorphanol-propofol anesthesia with oxygen insufflation may be safely used for surgical intervention in healthy goats.  相似文献

Objective —To compare two methods of whole blood cyclosporine A (CsA) measurement in cats.
Study Design —Whole blood samples were analyzed for CsA concentrations with use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and monoclonal immunoassay methods.
Animals —Blood (n = 36 samples) was obtained from six cats after renal transplantation.
Methods —Results were compared by linear regression analysis using both pooled and individual patient data. Eight samples were off-scale on the immunoassay and were excluded.
Results —There was significant correlation between CsA measured using HPLC and immunoassay methods ( P < .001; r = .942; r2= .887). However, individuals varied nonrandomly from the mean pooled patient data. Correlation between the assay methods was higher for individual patients using data only from that specific individual (mean r value = .976; r2= .955). Clinical utility of the immunoassay (ie, results would prompt an appropriate CsA dosage adjustment) was good when based on individually derived conversion factors (27 of 28 [96.5%] of decision events).
Conclusion—HPLC is superior for measurement of blood CsA concentrations in cats after kidney transplantation. However, an immunoassay may provide reliable information for CsA management if a comparative database (HPLC v immunoassay) has been previously determined in a specific patient.
Clinical Relevance —Locally available monitoring of CsA by immunoassay in cats may provide significant advantages when shipping of blood samples to distant locations is required to obtain analysis by HPLC. These advantages may include cost and timeliness of results in circumstances where daily blood CsA concentrations may be desired, such as when managing an acute rejection reaction.  相似文献

In humans the dural tail is a sign seen on contrast enhanced T1 weighted magnetic resonance images. This finding is considered specific for meningioma. The purpose of this study was to determine how often the dural tail occurs in cats and dogs and whether it is a specific sign for meningiomas in these species. MR examinations for eighteen dogs and four cats with proven diagnoses were reviewed. Diagnoses included ten meningiomas (seven dogs and three cats), three gliomas, two pituitary tumors, single examples of two other tumor types and five patients with mass lesions due to inflammatory disease. Contrast enhanced T1 weighted images were evaluated independently by three of the authors for the presence of a dural tail, without knowledge of the diagnoses. The results were compared to the diagnosis for each patient and the performance of individual reviewers compared. When their results were averaged, the reviewers reported the presence of a dural tail in 6 of 10 (60%) meningiomas, although detection varied between observers from 40% to 80%. Each reviewer had one false positive result, two reported a dural tail with a chromophobe adenocarcinoma and one with a toxoplasma meningoencephalitis. When a dural tail is seen an associated mass is most likely a meningioma. It is uncertain whether the dural tail represents neoplastic infiltration beyond the margins of the meningioma. The records of 56 dogs treated with megavoltage radiation for mast cell neoplasia were reviewed to determine the efficacy of this treatment modality. Total radiation dose ranged from 45 to 57 Gray (Gy), dose per fraction ranged from 3.0 to 4.0 Gy, and radiation treatment time ranged from 14–28 days. Median disease free interval (95% CI) was 32.7 (19–70) months. Median disease free interval for dogs older than 7.5 years was 15 (lower limit 7) months as compared to 62 (lower limit 20) for dogs younger than 7.5 years of age (p = 0.006). Median disease free interval for dogs with measurable disease was 12 (lower limit 5) months as compared to 54 (32–70) months for dogs with microscopic disease (p = 0.006). Radiation treatment time was also significantly related to disease free interval. Median disease free interval for dogs treated longer than 22 days was 12 (7–19) months as compared to greater than 50 (lower limit 20) months for dogs treated in 22 or fewer days (p < 0.001). This appeared to be due to more recurrences in dogs treated with 3-per-week fractionation and suggests that tumor proliferation in the interfraction interval may be important. Sex, tumor location, histologic grade, WHO clinical stage, number of radiation fractions, total radiation dose, and dose-per-fraction, as well as the following "yes/no" variables: steroids given, surgery prior to radiation, lymph nodes irradiated, and development of another mast cell tumor did not appear to influence median disease free interval or survival. Data presented herein support megavoltage radiation as an effective treatment for canine mast cell neoplasia, and suggest that disease free interval in dogs treated with daily fractions may be longer than that achieved with alternating day fractions.  相似文献

A 7-month-old La Mancha doe was presented with a right head tilt and ventral strabismus while circling to the left. History and physical examination led to a tentative diagnosis of a cerebral abscess. Computed tomography revealed a large, complex mass with ring enhancement in the left cerebral hemisphere, supporting the diagnosis. Postmortem examination confirmed the cerebral abscess. Bacterial cultures yielded heavy growth of Actinomyces pyogenes.  相似文献

The scintigraphically measured percentage dose uptake of 99mTc-DTPA by the kidneys and the plasma clearance of 99mTc-DTPA have been reported to correlate well with inulin clearance. These two parameters were evaluated in seven dogs with known or suspected naturally occurring renal disease and compared to simultaneously measured renal inulin clearance. Correlation between inulin clearance and the 99mTc-DTPA plasma clearance was better ( p =.0016) than the correlation between the percentage DTPA uptake by the kidney. It was concluded that measurement of 99mTc-DTPA plasma clearance is a more accurate method to estimate global glomerular filtration rate (GFR) than the percentage kidney uptake.  相似文献

This has led to a demand for properly trained veterinarians who are capable of providing quality, up-to-date medical and surgical treatments. Many surgeries are now performed on exotic pets, and selection of the appropriate suture material is an important part of the treatment protocol. An understanding of different available suture materials, healing times of different tissues, and knowledge of different anatomic and physiologic characteristics in different species is important in the selection of the most appropriate suture material.
