Various chronic antidepressant treatments increase adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but the functional importance of this phenomenon remains unclear. Here, using genetic and radiological methods, we show that disrupting antidepressant-induced neurogenesis blocks behavioral responses to antidepressants. Serotonin 1A receptor null mice were insensitive to the neurogenic and behavioral effects of fluoxetine, a serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor. X-irradiation of a restricted region of mouse brain containing the hippocampus prevented the neurogenic and behavioral effects of two classes of antidepressants. These findings suggest that the behavioral effects of chronic antidepressants may be mediated by the stimulation of neurogenesis in the hippocampus. 相似文献

The chemical compositions, of raw and treated lupine flour were determined and compared with other plant protein sources. The protein content in the dry matter was 47.7% in untreated seeds ofLupinus mutabilis and about 56% in debittered seeds. The oil-cake contained 65.3% protein. The amino acid analysis showed that lupine protein is characterized by a low level of S-amino acids, the content of which amounts to only 50% of that of the FAO standard reference pattern. The protein quality was measured using the biological tests PER (Protein Efficiency Ratio), NPU (net protein utilization), and BV (biological value) in rats on diets with and without DL-methionine supplementation. PER determinations gave low values for the non-supplemented lupine proteins (1.34, semi-sweet variety; 1.53, water-extracted seeds; 1.19, oil-cake; 3.09, casein), but the PER's were improved by the addition of 0.2% DL-methionine to the diets (3.05, 2.69, 2.81, respectively). Raw as well as processed lupine protein showed an excellent apparent digestibility (80.0–85.8%; casein, 87.1%). The observed NPU and BV values confirmed the importance of methionine supplementation. The true digestibility of 92% was equivalent to that of casein. The complementation effects of mixing lupine protein with proteins from wheat, oat, barley, rice, maize, potato, quinua or fish were investigated by determination of the PER values of the respective mixtures. Feeding lupine protein with cereal proteins resulted in PER values that exceeded by far those of the proteins fed separately (true complementation). This result was not observed for the mixture of potato and lupine. High quality proteins like quinua and fish protein also showed no complementation effect with lupine protein but did improve the quality of the lupine protein to a great extent. The best results could be obtained with combinations of three different plant proteins, in which lupine protein always contributed one third of total protein. These mixtures resulted in PER values equal to those for casein or other animal proteins and may be applied as an economical way to prevent and combat malnutrition. 相似文献

The seeds ofLupinus mutabilis show on average a protein content of 42.6% and a fat content of 18.7%. Unfortunately they contain up to 4.5% of bitter alkaloids which must be removed before consumption. Edible oil and protein concentrate were produced from the seeds at an industrial level. The oil is of good quality and is recommended for human nutrition. The main fatty acid is oleic while the main tocopherol is γ-tocopherol. During the refining process, which includes a washing process with aqueous acids for debittering, the alkaloid content of the oil is reduced to 5 ppm. During the extraction of the oil the alkaloids are concentrated in the oil cake, from which they can be removed by washing with an ethanol-water mixture. A protein concentrate containing 72.3% protein and 0.06% residual alkaloids is obtained. The analysis of alkaloid pattern by gas-chromatography showed that the alkaloid composition of the crude oil differs totally from that of the seed. The relative percentage of the alkaloid esters and that of the Tetrahydrorhombifoline are very much higher in the oil than in the seed. Apple (Malus?×?domestica Borkh.) trees, either abandoned or cared for, are common on the North American landscape. These trees can live for decades, and therefore represent a record of large- and small-scale agricultural practices through time. Here, we assessed the genetic diversity and identity of 330 unknown apple trees in northern Minnesota with 9 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. The unknown (not identified by cultivar name) trees were compared to >?1000 named cultivars in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Genetic Resources Unit Malus collection and also to each other to identify repeated genotypes. Overall, the 330 unknown trees had high diversity (average He?=?0.75), and consisted of 264 unique genotypes. A total of 76 of the unknown trees were matched to 20 different named cultivars, and these cultivars were mainly derived from either the local breeding program at the University of Minnesota, or were Russian cultivars imported for horticulture in the northern US. This study demonstrates the importance of local breeding programs, and also the challenges associated with identifying clones in a genetically diverse crop like apple. 相似文献

Portal-drained visceral flux of nutrients in lambs fed alfalfa or maintained by total intragastric infusion 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An experiment was performed using lambs fitted with chronic indwelling catheters in appropriate blood vessels for portal-drained visceral (PDV) flux measurements. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate PDV nutrient flux in alfalfa-fed and intragastrically infused lambs and to evaluate the effects of amount of energy and N infused on PDV nutrient metabolism. Lambs were fed alfalfa or infused with 1.64 and 10.9; 1.82 and 12.3; or 2.37 and 15.0 Mcal GE and g N/d, respectively. Arterial concentrations and PDV fluxes of glucose, L-lactate, acetate and portal blood flow were not different (P greater than .10) between alfalfa-fed and infused lambs. Net flux of alpha-amino N, ammonia N and branched-chain VFA were lower (P less than .05) and net flux of propionate, butyrate and total VFA were higher for intragastric infusion vs alfalfa. No consistent differences in PDV fluxes were noted among the three levels of energy and N infused, although the energy and N levels tested were near maintenance requirements. Nitrogen retention increased as level of energy and N infusion increased. Approximately 47, 70 and 22% of ruminally infused acetate, propionate and butyrate, respectively, were found on a net basis in portal blood as VFA. Measurements of net nutrient utilization by the PDV that eliminate the influence of ruminal fermentation are possible. How the changes in PDV tissues due to intragastric infusion influence these estimates is unknown. 相似文献
