A juvenile Australian shepherd dog exhibited failure to grow, inappetence, weakness, nonregenerative anemia, neutropenia, and cobalamin deficiency. DNA testing confirmed homozygosity of an amnionless mutation (AMN c.3G > A). Clinical signs resolved with supportive care and parenteral cobalamin supplementation. Inherited selective intestinal cobalamin malabsorption requiring lifelong parenteral supplementation should be considered in Australian shepherds, giant schnauzers, border collies, and beagles that fail to thrive.  相似文献

A study of frequency of consumption and familiarity with preparing chestnuts was conducted in the state of Missouri from 2003 to 2008. A conjoint analysis of chestnut attributes was completed in 2008 to expand on previous consumer preference research. Information from final consumers was collected during the annual Missouri Chestnut Roast festival at the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center in New Franklin, Missouri. The study tracks changes in frequency of consumption and consumer familiarity with preparing chestnuts. The conjoint analysis evaluated pair-wise profiles to quantify the effects of origin, production process and price on consumer preferences. Results show improvements in the frequency of consumption and familiarity with cooking chestnuts in Missouri. Findings suggest the festival has influenced consumption patterns among return visitors. The conjoint analysis identified locality of produce and organic certification to be major drivers behind consumer preferences. Price is also an important attribute influencing consumer preferences. Conjoint analysis results indicate that chestnuts grown in Missouri or the U.S. carrying an organic label can capture price premiums.  相似文献

Deep digital flexor (DDF) tendinopathy is one of the most frequent causes of foot lameness and the prognosis is guarded. The progress of lesion healing may be followed by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to formulate a prognosis and to adapt the rehabilitation program. We assessed the correlation of outcome with total tendon damage and temporal resolution of MR abnormalities. Images from 34 horses with DDF tendinopathy that had undergone at least two low‐field standing MR examinations of the foot (mean 2.5 ± 1.3 times) were reviewed. No horse having a T1‐GRE hyperintense lesion over 30 mm in length or over 10% tendon cross‐sectional area returned to its previous activity level. Horses with concomitant lesions had worse outcome than horses with DDF tendinopathy only (P = 0.005). In all horses including those with excellent outcome, the lesion persisted, even mildly, in T1‐GRE and PD images. Horses with tendon lesion resolution on STIR‐FSE and T2‐FSE images on recheck examination had a better outcome (P = 0.0004 and P = 0.002, respectively), and all horses that returned to their previous level of performance had complete resolution of signal hyperintensity on the STIR‐FSE sequence. Although rehabilitation remains multifactorial, characteristics of DDF tendinopathy and concomitant lesions on first and recheck MR examinations allow refining the prognosis.  相似文献

The case report in this issue by Woodford et al. (2017) describes the surgical management of an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a 5‐week old miniature foal. Only a handful of reports exist in the literature describing surgical procedures for repair of these congenital abnormalities in foals. One of the important aspects of the accompanying case report was the multidisciplinary approach taken in handling, imaging and surgical repair of the extrahepatic shunt. Small animal internal medicine specialists and surgeons diagnose portosystemic shunts much more frequently than equine veterinarians, regardless of whether they are general practitioners or specialists. It is therefore important to work as a team with small and large animal practitioners. The case described by Woodford et al. (2017) had a positive outcome.  相似文献

Buried horizons and lenses in riparian soil profiles harbor large amounts of carbon relative to the surrounding soil horizons. Because these buried soil horizons, as well as deep surface horizons, frequently lie beneath the water table, their impact on nitrogen transport across the terrestrial–aquatic interface depends upon their frequency and spatial distribution, and upon the lability of associated organic matter. We collected samples of 51 soil horizons from 14 riparian zones Rhode Island, USA, where soil profiles are characterized by glacial outwash and alluvial deposits. These soil samples came from as deep as 2 m and ranged in carbon content from <1% to 44% in a buried O horizon 54–74 cm deep. We used these samples to: (1) determine the extent to which carbon in buried horizons, and deep surface horizons, is potentially microbially available; (2) identify spatial patterns of carbon mineralization associated with surface and buried horizons; and (3) evaluate likely relationships between soil horizon types, chemical characteristics and carbon mineralization. Carbon mineralization rates associated with buried horizons during anaerobic incubations ranged from 0.0001 to 0.0175 μmol C kg soil?1 s?1 and correlated positively with microbial biomass (R=0.89, P<0.0001, n=21). Excluding surface O horizons from the analysis, carbon mineralization varied systematically with horizon type (surface A, buried A, buried O, lenses, A/C, B, C) (P<0.05) but not with depth or depth x horizon interaction (overall R2=0.59, P<0.0005, n=47). In contrast to this result and to most published data sets, 13C-to-12C and 15N-to-14N ratios of organic matter declined with depth (13C?26.9 to ?29.3 per mil, 15N+5.6 to ?0.8 per mil). The absence of a relationship between horizon depth and C availability suggests that carbon availability in these buried horizons may be determined by the abundance and quality of organic matter at the time of horizon formation or burial, rather than by duration since burial, and implies that subsurface microbial activity is largely disconnected from surface ecosystems. Our results contribute to the emerging view that buried horizons harbor microbially available C in quantities relevant to ecosystem processes, and suggest that buried C-rich soil horizons need to be incorporated into assessments of the depth of the biologically active zone in near-stream subsurface soils.  相似文献

Increased planting of hard mast oak species in the Lower Missouri River floodplain is critical as natural regeneration of oak along the Upper Mississippi and Lower Missouri Rivers has been limited following major flood events in 1993 and 1995. Traditional planting methods have limited success due to frequent flood events, competition from faster growing vegetation and white-tailed deer herbivory. Results of early growth response of swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor Willd.) seedlings in relation to initial acorn mass and size, and early rapid shoot growth for seedlings produced by containerized root production method (RPM™), are presented. Containerized RPM™ seedlings grown in the greenhouse under optimal conditions demonstrate that seed size had no discernable impact on first-year root or shoot size. Seedling survival for the first two years and acorn production for the first three years after outplanting are presented, comparing use of containerized RPM™ swamp white oak seedlings to nursery stock. Flood tolerant precocious RPM™ oak seedlings in the floodplain provide a source of food for acorn-consuming wildlife ten to fifteen years sooner than oaks originating from natural regeneration, direct seeding or traditional bare root planting. Compared to bare root nursery stock that produced no acorns, some RPM™ swamp white oak seedlings averaged 4.3, 5.2, and 6.3 acorns/seedling in the first three years after fall outplanting.
