Purpose
Stormwater bioretention systems are widely used to treat diffuse infiltration of runoff from paved surfaces and roofs. Substantial questions remain about the hydraulic performance and the accumulation of pollutants in systems over the long term. Data of metal accumulation of systems with operational times >10 years currently is limited. This study deals with the accumulation of metals in a variety of long-term operational bioretention systems (11–22 years) to derive further operation recommendations for the water authorities.Materials and methods
The hydraulic conductivity of the bioretention systems in field was measured using a double ring infiltrometer. Media soil samples from 22 diverse designed systems were collected across the surface and at intervals up to a depth of 65 cm to determine the spatial accumulation of Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd. Leaching experiments of selected bioretention media soils were derived to assess the metal leachability by water.Results and discussion
The hydraulic performance of most bioretention systems still met the technical guidelines of Germany even after long-term operation. Considerable metal accumulation occurred in the topsoil (0–20 cm). Median concentrations of all metals are highest at the soil surface (0–10 cm), decreasing with increasing depth. High concentrations were determined at the inflow points of the runoff waters, whereas concentrations at more than 1.5 m distance from the inflow were only slightly increased compared to the initial soil concentrations. Leachability tests have shown that most of the metals deposited in bioretention soils are only slightly water soluble. No concentrations exceeding the threshold values of the German Soil Contamination Ordinance for the pathway soil to groundwater could be determined.Conclusions
The hydraulic conductivity of the bioretention systems is given even well after long-term operation. Most of the metal accumulation is concentrated in the top 20 cm; concentrations decrease rapidly and mostly reach background/initial concentrations after depths of 30 cm. The water-soluble metals are all below the trigger values of the German Soil Act. This underlines the strong retention capacity of long-term bioretention systems after long-term operational times.22.

We report the design and total chemical synthesis of "synthetic erythropoiesis protein" (SEP), a 51-kilodalton protein-polymer construct consisting of a 166-amino-acid polypeptide chain and two covalently attached, branched, and monodisperse polymer moieties that are negatively charged. The ability to control the chemistry allowed us to synthesize a macromolecule of precisely defined covalent structure. SEP was homogeneous as shown by high-resolution analytical techniques, with a mass of 50,825 +/-10 daltons by electrospray mass spectrometry, and with a pI of 5.0. In cell and animal assays for erythropoiesis, SEP displayed potent biological activity and had significantly prolonged duration of action in vivo. Different thermal treatments or processes (combustion, welding, thermowood) of several wood species were examined and compared. Each procedure resulted in different temperature loads on wood. The changes of lignin after thermal treatments were determined by different suitable methods, both wet chemical and instrumental analyses.The characterisation of the wood meals by means of FTIR spectroscopy has shown that changes of the aromatic skeletal vibrations occur, which indicate condensation reactions of lignin. The variations within the FTIR spectra of hardwood were more evident than those of softwood.The decomposition of lignin has also been proven in the acetone extracts of “thermowood”, which contained a lignan, identified by GC/MS.Moreover, the thioacidolysis showed the decrease of monomeric degradation products in all thermal treated samples. This is due to the cleavage of structural units bound by arylgycerol-β-ether linkages.However, it can be assumed that in addition to the degradation of specified types of bonds also condensation reactions have occurred and these products were not detectable by means of GC/MS. A male cat suffered from a severe haemorrhagic disorder manifesting as deep, partly infected cutaneous haematomas, enhanced and prolonged bleeding after injuries and subsequent lameness at several occasions. Bleeding resulted in severe anaemia with haematocrit falling to as low as 0.10 L/L. Haemophilia B was diagnosed based on factor IX deficiency with a functional residual activity of 5% and factor IX antigen of 8%, respectively. Additionally, factor XII activity was reduced to 32% of normal. The mutation 31217G==>A in exon 8 of the factor IX gene, predicting the amino acid exchange G366R was identified as the cause of moderate factor IX deficiency. This is the first mutation identified in cats with haemophilia B. Treatment was limited to local therapy and palliation, insufficient to prevent lethal outcome due to severe anaemia. 相似文献

Carpropamid (WIN™, KTU 3616) provides good control of leaf and panicle blast by ‘one-shot’ nursery-box treatment. It inhibits melanin biosynthesis in appressorial cells of Pyricularia oryzae, making them hyaline. Penetration by infection hyphae from the hyaline appressoria into rice epidermal cells is substantially hindered. In addition, the spread of rice blast spores from primary lesions to the other parts of the plant leading to secondary infection is largely prevented when the plants are treated with carpropamid by spray or water surface application. Secondary infection was simulated in a glass chamber fitted with an ultrasonic humidifier. On treated plants, many blast spores formed in the lesions, but the number of air spora that were dispersed from the lesions decreased significantly. A similar suppression of the spore liberation was observed in vitro when lesions on rice leaf segments, or discs from Pyricularia cultures on oatmeal agar were treated with the chemical. Spores from treated lesions or from the cultures on oatmeal agar amended with the chemical germinated normally and produced well-melanized appressoria on cellophane membranes. In addition, the spores proved to be fully pathogenic towards rice seedlings, producing normal disease symptoms. These results strongly suggest that carpropamid reduces the secondary infection of rice by Pyricularia by specifically hindering spore liberation. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献
