Development and Classification of Marsh Soils from the Unterweser Region, West Germany. II. Importance of Sulfur Metabolism, Methane Production and Ca/Mg Ratio for Classifying Marsh Soils The importance of sulfur metabolism in each step of marsh soil development (Brümmer, 1968) is also confirmed for the marsh soils of the Unterweser region. Sulfur contents and sulfur fractions indicate that soil development has advanced further in brackish marshes than in marine and river marshes. The results give additional evidence that the various properties of marsh soils are only partly caused by sedimentation conditions. – The sedimentation areas (Müller, 1954) apply only to small regions. Thus, methane production predominates in the freshwater area, while sulfate reduction predominates in the marine area. Both processes occur at high rates in the brackish area. Classifying soils on the basis of the Ca/Mg ratio gives the same soil groups as Brümmers classification. Consequently, classifying the marsh soils of Niedersachsen on the basis of Ca/Mg ratio is a suitable method, if the idea that sedimentation conditions cause soil properties – especially the contents of exchangeable Ca and Mg – and the present designations of the soil groups are rejected. 相似文献

A rapid, simple chemosensitivity assay, assessing tumor cell nuclear uptake of doxorubicin hydrochloride, was evaluated in 16 dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma. Doxorubicin was administered to dogs in 5 biweekly treatments, and surgical resection was performed after the second or third treatment. The chemosensitivity assay was performed on biopsy specimens from all dogs before chemotherapy. It was repeated on tissue from resected tumors, and tumors were evaluated histologically to determine the degree of necrosis resulting from chemotherapy. Disease-free and total survival time correlated significantly (P less than 0.05 in both cases) with the degree of postchemotherapy necrosis of the primary tumors. Significant correlation was not apparent between the percentage of tumor cells with nuclear uptake of doxorubicin (in either biopsy or resection samples) and disease-free or total survival time. The percentage of cells with nuclear uptake of doxorubicin in surgically resected tumors correlated significantly (P less than 0.05) with percentage of necrosis. 相似文献

The genetically caused intensity of growth from piglets (barrows) of four breeds and two crossbreeds was evaluated by estimation of maximum daily capacity per LW 0.67 kg of N-balance plus N-maintenance-requirement (A) on the basis of a total of 130 N balance measurings on 66 piglets in the live weight range between 10 and 20 kg. The estimation was realized by using the N utilization model by Gebhardt (1963) and of its further development. In comparison with Landrace (A = 2575 mg) the breeds Edelschwein (A = 3,242 mg) and Leicoma (A = 3,038 mg) had a higher A in the midst of the piglet period (9th and 10th week of life), but not so the breed Schwerfurter (A = 2,350 mg). The capacity of the following N balances during growing and fattening stages is not derivable from these values. The experimentally evaluated A of crossbreeds is in good agreement with the calculated A on the basis of the used races for breeding. The product A.b = 1.15 is characterizing the quality of the feed protein (a mixture of wheat and casein in the relation 2.2:1), independently of the live weight and also of the breed or the genotype of the pig. 相似文献

Aim To determine the normal microbial flora of the koala ejaculate and prepuce in order to select appropriate antibiotics for addition into diluents designed for the preservation of semen.
Procedure Bacteriological samples of the koala prepuce (n = 12) and ejaculate (n = 20) were submitted for microbial culture and sensitivity testing. Microbial flora of ejaculates collected by electroejaculation and artificial vagina were compared. The effects of varying concentrations of penicillin G and gentamicin on sperm motility and on the growth of bacteria in diluted semen stored at room temperature and 16°C over a 24 h period were investigated.
Results A range of bacteria was isolated from the koala prepuce and ejaculate. The predominant organisms in semen collected by electroejaculation and artificial vagina were Corynebacterium spp, none of which could be assigned to any recognised species. The addition of penicillin G and gentamicin to a PBS-based diluent at dose rates of 1000 to 2000 IU/mL and 100 to 200 m g/mL respectively, resulted in no adverse effect on sperm motility over a 24 h incubation period. Penicillin G (1000 IU/mL) and gentamicin (100 m g/mL) prevented growth of bacterial contaminants in diluted koala semen.
Conclusion By controlling the growth of bacteria in extended koala semen, penicillin G and gentamicin are likely to lengthen the period by which spermatozoa can be stored at 16°C and reduce the possibility of disease transmission during artificial insemination procedures. 相似文献

Digital image processing has the potential to support the identification of plant species required for site-specific weed control in grassland swards. The present study focuses on the identification of one of the most invasive and persistent weed species on European grassland, the broad-leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius L., R.o.), in complex mixtures of perennial ryegrass with R.o. and other herbs.A total of 108 digital photographs were obtained from a field experiment under constant recording geometry and illumination conditions. An object-oriented image classification was performed. Image segmentation was done by transforming the red, green, blue (RGB) colour images to greyscale intensity images. Based on that, local homogeneity images were calculated and a homogeneity threshold (0.97) was applied to derive binary images. Finally, morphological opening was performed. The remaining contiguous regions were considered to be objects. Features describing shape, colour and texture were calculated for each of these objects. A Maximum-likelihood classification was done to discriminate between the weed species. In addition, rank analysis was used to test how combinations of features influenced the classification result.The detection rate of R.o. varied with the training dataset used for classification. Average R.o. detection rates ranged from 71 to 95% for the 108 images, which included more than 3,600 objects. Misclassifications of R.o. occurred mainly with Plantago major (P.m.). Between 9 and 16% R.o. objects were classified incorrectly as P.m. and 17–24% P.m. objects were misclassified as R.o. The classification result was influenced by the defined object classes (R.o., P.m., T.o., soil, residue vs. R.o., residue). In Gebhardt et al. (2006) an object-oriented image classification algorithm was introduced for detecting Rumex obtusifolius (RUMOB) and other weeds in mixed grassland swards, based on shape, colour and texture features. This paper describes a new algorithm that improves classification accuracy. The leaves of the typical grassland weeds (RUMOB, Taraxacum officinale, Plantago major) and other homogeneous regions were segmented automatically in digital colour images using local homogeneity and morphological operations. Additional texture and colour features were identified that contribute to the differentiation between grassland weeds using a stepwise discriminant analysis. Maximum-likelihood classification was performed on the variables retained after discriminant analysis. Classification accuracy was improved by up to 83% and Rumex detection rates of 93% were achieved. The effect of image resolution on classification results was investigated. The eight million pixel images were upscaled in six stages to create images with decreasing pixel resolution. Rumex detection rates of over 90% were obtained at almost all resolutions, and there was only moderate misclassification of other objects to RUMOB. Image processing time ranged from 45 s for the full resolution images to 2.5 s for the lowest resolution ones. 相似文献

Abstract Compared to mammals, twinning in birds is rare. The reported incidence in domestic chickens (Gallus gallus) is 0.11 % (Byerly and Olsen 1934) and in pigeons (Columba livia) only 0.07% (Riddle 1923). Monozygotic twins occur following the fission of an early embryo and may or may not share the same yolk. Dizygotic twins are thought to occur following 2 simultaneous ovulations or perhaps by the slow passage of an ovum down the oviduct, resulting in it being caught by a succeeding yolk and then being incorporated into the same membrane and shell (Harrison 1986).
