Inhibited development of trichostrongylid worms in grazing cattle

Inhibition of development of gastro-intestinal trichostrongylid worms was studied using successive groups of tracer calves and groups of continuously grazed calves over one year in the Tully area of North Queensland lowland wet tropics. The results, assessed by means of worms from these calves recovered at necropsy 3 weeks after their removal from pastures, showed inhibition in the development of Haemonchus placei and Cooperia punctata at the early fourth stage at the approach to and during the relatively dry period in the area. Inhibition was however minor and inhibited larvae formed but only a small percentage of worm burdens in both categories of calves, indicating that they were not in any way of major epidemiological importance. It was suggested that the minor nature of inhibition was due to the mild climatic conditions which could not produce appropriate conditioning treatment, or caused only mild selection pressure for inhibition in the area.     

Corrective Osteotomy for Pes Varus in the Dachshund

Five dachshunds were treated for a distal varus deformity of one tibia. Angulations of 20 degrees to 30 degrees resulted from shortening of the medial tibial length with the maximum curvature at the distal metaphysis. Comparison with the contralateral limbs was required to determine the amount of correction necessary for functional and cosmetic results. Open wedge osteotomies stabilized with a modified type II external fixator resulted in correction of the deformities, early return of limb function, and healing of the osteotomies.     

Interaction of root-lesion nematodes, Pratylenchus thornei and P. crenatus, with the fungus Thielaviopsis basicola and a grey sterile fungus on roots of pea (Pisum sativum)

Pratylenchus thornei invaded excised pea roots in agar in greater numbers and penetrated the cortex more deeply than P. crenatus . Both species fed on the roots ectoparasitically and displaced root cells into the surrounding medium. The cytoplasm of cortical cells near cither nematode became granulated, with enlarged vacuoles and nuclei. P. thornei also caused these responses in the endodermis. Infection of the root surface with a grey sterile fungus inhibited invasion by P. crenatus and P. thornei . Infection by Thielaviopsis basicola inhibited P. thornei invasion but encouraged penetration by P. crenatus and the hyphae were found deeper in the cortex when P. crenatus was present.     

Ribonucleic acid: effect on conditioned behavior in rats

Acquisition of a behavioral response motivated by shock was enhanced in rats chronically treated with yeast ribonucleic acid, and resistance to extinction was greater in rats so treated than in controls. This extends the role of ribonucleic acid to include a behavioral effect in laboratory mammals treated with a purified preparation from yeast.     

ACETYLCHOLINE-LIKE ACTIVITY IN SCIATIC NERVE

Extracts of sciatic nerve exhibit acetylcholine-like activity that is only partly attributable to acetylcholine. The extracts show relatively greater activity on the rectus abdominis muscle of the frog than on the ileum of the guinea pig. To prevent the action of the extract on the frog rectus abdominis muscle, a greater concentration of d-tubocurarine is required than is necessary to prevent the action of known acetylcholine.
