Phytophthora cinnamomi, the causal agent of Phytophthora Root Rot (PRR) of avocado, is the most serious disease of avocado worldwide. The development of tolerant rootstocks to control PRR has proven to be an effective means to control the disease. However, using traditional breeding approaches can take over a decade to produce results and there has been a limited use to integrate molecular data into breeding efforts. Therefore, the objective of this work was to use amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) to genetically characterize greenhouse selected PRR tolerant rootstocks, some that had been field-tested and others that had not. Sixty-one polymorphic markers were identified among the 83 cultivars/selections tested. Based on UPGMA analysis, extensive genotypic diversity was found with the closest genotypes differing by six markers. No obvious trends were observed based on the cluster analysis with regards to known tolerant and susceptible rootstocks but rootstocks that have been field-tested and determined to be very tolerant rootstocks such as Latas, Dusa, PP14 (Uzi), PP4 (Zentmyer), and PP24 (Steddom) were distributed across the tree. This suggests that the same mechanisms for resistance may not be shared among these various selections. Therefore, these best-performing and most genetically diverse rootstocks will be combined in future breeding efforts to potentially pyramid diverse sources of resistance into future selections.  相似文献

The performance of amorphous organic photorefractive (PR) materials in applications such as optical data storage is generally limited by the concentration of active molecules (chromophores) that can be incorporated into the host without forming a crystalline material with poor optical quality. In polymeric PR systems described previously, performance has been limited by the necessity of devoting a large fraction of the material to inert polymer and plasticizing components in order to ensure compositional stability. A new class of organic PR materials composed of multifunctional glass-forming organic chromophores is described that have long-term stability and greatly improved PR properties.  相似文献

Two harvests of ocean-growing red tide, comprised mainly of Gonyaulax polyedra, were evaluated in limited trials of rat feeding. The protein of red tide (25 to 30 percent, dry basis) supported growth satisfactorily. The essential amino acid composition of the protein closely resembles that of casein, the major protein of milk. Stem cell self-renewal can be specified by local signals from the surrounding microenvironment, or niche. However, the relation between the niche and the mechanisms that ensure the correct balance between stem cell self-renewal and differentiation is poorly understood. Here, we show that dividing Drosophila male germline stem cells use intracellular mechanisms involving centrosome function and cortically localized Adenomatous Polyposis Coli tumor suppressor protein to orient mitotic spindles perpendicular to the niche, ensuring a reliably asymmetric outcome in which one daughter cell remains in the niche and self-renews stem cell identity, whereas the other, displaced away, initiates differentiation.  相似文献

Because of the relation between topology and function, there has been much interest in the structural transitions of the various conformations of DNA polymers. The x-ray fiber diffraction analysis system at the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source was used to study the reversible transition between the B and D forms of the synthetic DNA poly[d(A-T)].poly[d(A-T)]. The gradual progression of conformations between these two forms indicates that the DNA double helix does not undergo a change of handedness during this transition.  相似文献

When food is plentiful, circadian rhythms of animals are powerfully entrained by the light-dark cycle. However, if animals have access to food only during their normal sleep cycle, they will shift most of their circadian rhythms to match the food availability. We studied the basis for entrainment of circadian rhythms by food and light in mice with targeted disruption of the clock gene Bmal1, which lack circadian rhythmicity. Injection of a viral vector containing the Bmal1 gene into the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus restored light-entrainable, but not food-entrainable, circadian rhythms. In contrast, restoration of the Bmal1 gene only in the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus restored the ability of animals to entrain to food but not to light. These results demonstrate that the dorsomedial hypothalamus contains a Bmal1-based oscillator that can drive food entrainment of circadian rhythms.  相似文献

Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) fossils discovered in the Kem Kem region of Morocco include large predatory dinosaurs that inhabited Africa as it drifted into geographic isolation. One, represented by a skull approximately 1.6 meters in length, is an advanced allosauroid referable to the African genus Carcharodontosaurus. Another, represented by a partial skeleton with slender proportions, is a new basal coelurosaur closely resembling the Egyptian genus Bahariasaurus. Comparisons with Cretaceous theropods from other continents reveal a previously unrecognized global radiation of carcharodontosaurid predators. Substantial geographic differentiation of dinosaurian faunas in response to continental drift appears to have arisen abruptly at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

Birds in woodland can be affected by increasing deer populations through changes to vegetation structure and potential impacts on foraging resources; these effects need to be better understood. Effects of deer browsing are reported from a replicated split-plot exclusion experiment in English coppiced woodland. All stages of growth were examined up to eight years after felling. We used standardised mist-netting (totaling 1920 h) to sample birds in breeding and post-breeding periods. Deer browsing strongly altered vegetation structure by reducing canopy cover and shrub layer foliage density. However deer did not affect invertebrate density per unit of foliage, providing no evidence of an ungulate-mediated plant chemical response affecting forage quality for invertebrate herbivores. At avian guild level, significantly more ground and understorey foraging birds were captured where deer were excluded, and negative responses to browsing were more marked for pooled migrants than pooled residents. At the species level, especially pronounced negative effects were evident for dunnock (Prunella modularis) and garden warbler (Sylvia borin); approximately five times more dunnocks were captured in deer exclosures than in browsed vegetation. We also detected negative responses to browsing by nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) and long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus). No significant positive responses to browsing were detected. For some species the use of young re-growth increased post breeding relative to the breeding period, including a marked shift by pooled residents that involved a disproportionate number of juveniles. Previous studies in North America have shown that, through vegetation modification, ungulate activity can alter woodland bird assemblages; as far as we are aware this is the first experimental demonstration of effects in Europe, and at low to moderate browsing intensity typical of the wider landscape scale.  相似文献

Sorghum (S. bicolor L. Moench cv. Bok 8) plants were grown in soil or sand-perlite low in plant-available N and P. Plants were inoculated with a vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus, or a strain of Azospirillum brasilense or both endophytes together. Plants received a nutrient solution which did not contain N or P. Increases in plant dry weight, shoot-to-root ratios, and the N content of dually-infected plants could be accounted for by summing the VAM and Azospirillum effects. For sorghum inoculated with both endophytes, the presence of A. brasilense in the rhizosphere increased VAM colonization and biomass, while the N input due to Azospirillum decreased, possibly due to competition for carbohydrates.Comparisons between sorghum grown with or without VAM-fungal infection in four growth media showed that edaphic factors other than P availability determined the host response to VAM infection. The P-fixing capacity of the soil, rather than the amount of available (NaHCO3-extractable) P, influenced the balance between mutualistic and parasitic VAM-fungal growth.  相似文献
