Renal concentrating mechanism: possible role for sodium-potassium activated adenosine triphosphatase

Sodium-potassium activated adenosine triphosphatase activity was found to be almost twice as high in renal medulla as in cortex. Infusion of digoxin, a specific inhibitor of the enzyme, into one renal artery of the dog resulted in unilateral natriuresis, impaired concentrating capacity, and reduction of the enzyme activity in both cortex and medulla. It is suggested that the sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase plays an important role in urine concentration mechanisms.     

The settlement and reproductive success of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer 1837; Copepoda: Caligidae) on atypical hosts

The reproductive success of Lepeophtheirus salmonis settled on host and non‐host fish has been compared. Triplicate single species tanks of Atlantic salmon, marine three‐spined sticklebacks, saithe and Atlantic cod were exposed to 10 adult female L. salmonis per tank (n=30 lice per species). Adult female L. salmonis settlement and egg string production occurred only on salmon and cod, with no egg production occurring on saithe and three‐spined sticklebacks. The number of eggs in egg strings, hatching success of eggs and the survival of all larval stages to the copepodid stage were severely affected by the species of fish on which female L. salmonis had settled. L. salmonis settled on cod produced significantly fewer eggs, lower hatching rates and lower survival rates of larvae than females on Atlantic salmon. The production of egg strings by L. salmonis females infecting cod, which successfully hatch and moult through to the infective copepodid stage, albeit in small numbers, is discussed in terms of the implications to aquaculture and salmon and cod farming scenarios.     

Comparisons of soil organic matter and its fractions by pyrolysis mass-spectrometry

Pyrolysis mass-spectra from a sample of the A₁-horizon of a soil from southern Spain showed predominant peaks related to furan derivatives similar to those observed from complex polysaccharides in which not only hexoses but also pentoses and deoxyhexoses were constituent units. Smaller peaks, typical for protein materials and phenolic units, were also observed. On the other hand, typical peaks for the methoxyphenols of lignins were very small and indicated only limited amounts of undecomposed lignin residues in this soil sample. Peaks related to benzene or toluene were also very small.Humic acid samples from this soil showed much more prominent signals related to protein materials, benzene and phenolic derivatives and weaker polysaccharide-related signals than did the entire sample. Typical lignin related peaks were small or insignificant. Spectra from the grey or brown humidic acid fractions were much like those of the parent humic acid. Brown humic acid, however, showed stronger signals for nitrogen and sulphur compounds, indicating a higher content of protein-like materials in this fraction. Preparations of humic acid hydrolyzed by 6 N HCl showed in their pyrolysis products a marked increase in phenols and methoxyphenols.In its pyrogram, humin resembled humic acid, but signals for complex polysaccharides were more evident. Lignin-like materials seem not to be higher in this fraction. Hymatomelanic acid showed prominent signals related to polysaccharides and lignin. Pyrograms from the soil polysaccharides showed the characteristic pattern of a complex polysaccharide with the presence of fragments from polymers of amino acids or amino sugars. Fulvic acid spectra showed obvious dissimilarities to those from humic acid in that signals for protein, as well as those related to phenols, were low. Depending upon the isolation method, the fulvic acid preparations showed differing signals related to polysaccharide or phenolic materials.     

Traders' preference for goat characteristics in selected markets of Pangasinan, Philippines

Preference for goat characteristics was determined from 42 traders in six markets in Pangasinan, an important trading center for goats in Luzon, the Philippines, and analyzed using a hedonic price model to determine whether these characteristics are important price determinants of goats. This information is important to goat raisers to respond to the needs of the local market, and thus to achieve a better price and higher income in goat raising. Meatiness, size, breed, sex and age (in descending order) were the dominant goat characteristics preferred by traders. Meatiness had the largest positive influence on price, with a price premium of US$6.24 (US$1.00 = PhP 53), whereas the age of the animal had the smallest influence at US$3.72. However, size and meatiness are manifestations of good breeds. Therefore, continued efforts to improve breeds in order to produce good quality goats are imperative to cater to market needs. Different characteristics implied different price premiums. Traders offered a higher price premium for better goat characteristics; thus, the improvement of these characteristics could result in higher returns for goat raisers.
