In the last decades, it has been demonstrated that marine organisms are a substantial source of bioactive compounds with possible biotechnological applications. Marine sponges, in particular those belonging to the class of Demospongiae, have been considered among the most interesting invertebrates for their biotechnological potential. In this review, particular attention is devoted to natural compounds/extracts isolated from Demospongiae and their associated microorganisms with important biological activities for pharmacological applications such as antiviral, anticancer, antifouling, antimicrobial, antiplasmodial, antifungal and antioxidant. The data here presented show that this class of sponges is an exciting source of compounds, which are worth developing into new drugs, such as avarol, a hydroquinone isolated from the marine sponge Disidea avara, which is used as an antitumor, antimicrobial and antiviral drug. 相似文献

The phytonutrient intake associated with tomato consumption depends also on cultivar and fruit ripening stage. This work associates the antioxidative ability, the level of carotenoids, and the amount of glycoalkaloids to the main carpometric characteristics of four different typologies of tomatoes: "cherry", "cluster", "elongated," and "salad". These typologies have different weights and shapes, and they are usually consumed in the Mediterranean area at different ripening stages. Results showed that the considered tomato typologies also differ in their antioxidative ability and their carotenoid and glycoalkaloid contents. Growing conditions are also important in determining fruit characteristics: the analysis of the same cultivar of cherry tomato produced under the influence of moderate salt stress showed increases in the lipophilic antioxidative ability and the amount of carotenoid, whereas the level of glycoalkaloid decreased. 相似文献

Human UBIAD1 localizes to mitochondria and converts vitamin K(1) to vitamin K(2). Vitamin K(2) is best known as a cofactor in blood coagulation, but in bacteria it is a membrane-bound electron carrier. Whether vitamin K(2) exerts a similar carrier function in eukaryotic cells is unknown. We identified Drosophila UBIAD1/Heix as a modifier of pink1, a gene mutated in Parkinson's disease that affects mitochondrial function. We found that vitamin K(2) was necessary and sufficient to transfer electrons in Drosophila mitochondria. Heix mutants showed severe mitochondrial defects that were rescued by vitamin K(2), and, similar to ubiquinone, vitamin K(2) transferred electrons in Drosophila mitochondria, resulting in more efficient adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. Thus, mitochondrial dysfunction was rescued by vitamin K(2) that serves as a mitochondrial electron carrier, helping to maintain normal ATP production. 相似文献

This paper reports the results of chemical analyses performed on two distinct groups of new potato genotypes. The first group contained five clones transformed with the gene ech42 encoding for an endochitinase. The second included 21 interspecific hybrids between the cultivated potato Solanum tuberosum and the wild species S. commersonii, obtained either by somatic fusion or by sexual hybridization. Tubers from transgenic plants were analyzed for several morphological and biochemical parameters to ascertain the substantial equivalence between the transgenic genotypes and the original cultivar Désirée. The interspecific hybrids were analyzed for the same parameters in order to identify genotypes with novel improved chemical characteristics and with low levels of glycoalkaloids deriving from the wild species and potentially hazardous to human health. For transgenic tubers, the results provided evidence that indicates the substantial equivalence between the transgenic genotypes and the cultivated control for the considered traits. The results suggest that chitinase gene insertion did not alter other metabolic pathways of potato tubers and did not cause unintentional pleiotropic effects. As far as interspecific hybrids are concerned, wide variability for all of the parameters analyzed was found. For some useful traits (e.g., soluble solids and proteins, dry matter content) the interspecific hybrids performed better than both the cultivated control and the wild species. In a number of genotypes, glycoalkaloid levels were close to or lower than those of the control varieties, suggesting that selection for low glycoalkaloid content is possible. The results also indicated that glycoalkaloids from S. commersonii may be lost rapidly. Indeed, some hybrids were found to have the same glycoalkaloid profile as S. tuberosum. Finally, the results showed that among the parameters considered, glycoalkaloid content is the most sensitive to variation. Therefore, glycoalkaloid determination should be used for routine control of genotypes produced by interspecific hybridization. 相似文献

The addition of 0.5% (v/v) of Equex STM Paste (Nova Chemical Sales, Scituate Inc., MA, USA), whose active ingredient is sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), to a Tris–egg yolk extender was demonstrated to improve the longevity of frozen–thawed dog spermatozoa during in vitro incubation at 38°C. The aim of the first experiment was to compare the effects of two SDS‐containing compounds, Equex STM Paste and Equex Pasta (Minitüb, Tiefenbach, Germany), when added to a Tris–egg yolk based extender, on the post‐thaw longevity of dog spermatozoa, as well as on the intracellular Ca2+ concentration of spermatozoa, during post‐thaw incubation at 38°C. The post‐thaw sperm survival and longevity, as well as the quality of the sperm movement, were significantly better when using Equex STM Paste. Such prolonged sperm longevity, however, was associated to a higher intracellular Ca2+ concentration in a large subpopulation of the live spermatozoa. A second experiment was aimed to evaluate the effects of sperm dilution immediately post‐thaw with a Tris buffer containing glucose or fructose. The two Tris buffers were no different for any of the sperm parameters studied. The aim of a third experiment was to evaluate the sperm longevity, motility patterns and intracellular Ca2+ concentration of cryopreserved dog spermatozoa during post‐thaw incubation in capacitating conditions [canine capacitating medium (CCM) with or without 5 μg/ml of heparin]. Heparin had no significant effects on any of the sperm parameters evaluated. During the first 8 h of incubation, the majority of the live spermatozoa had a high intracellular Ca2+ content. However, after 8–10 h of incubation, it had significantly declined. The highest proportion of fast motile sperm, and the highest curvilinear velocity, average path velocity and amplitude of lateral head displacement for the total motile sperm were observed during the 2–4‐h incubation period. It was concluded that: (a) the addition of 0.5% (v/v) of Equex STM Paste to a Tris–egg yolk based extender significantly improved the post‐thaw longevity of dog spermatozoa, but the same concentration of Equex Pasta had no significant beneficial effects; (b) sperm dilution after thawing with a Tris buffer containing glucose or fructose made no difference in post‐thaw sperm longevity; (c) the addition of 5 μg/ml of heparin to CCM had no significant capacitating effects on frozen–thawed dog spermatozoa. 相似文献

Many epidemiological studies have shown the importance of fruit and vegetables in the human diet so as to prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease and several forms of cancer. The use for food and pharmaceuticals of two of the most widely grown and genetically well-known species in the world, the tomato and the potato, is reviewed. Tomatoes are important sources of vitamin C, potassium, folic acid and carotenoids such as lycopene and beta-carotene. It has been demonstrated that lycopene has anti-oxidant properties and interferes with the growth of cancerous cells. At the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics in Portici, interesting results have been obtained with the constitution of stable tomato hybrids having a high content of lycopene and vitamin C. Many of the parental lines used in constituting the hybrids come from interspecific crosses. Potato is also very important in the human diet for its content of high quality proteins, mineral salts and vitamins and it has many medicinal properties. The use of diploid wild species to transfer traits such as high content of vitamin C, mineral salts and high quality proteins into the cultivated potato through ploidy manipulation is discussed. 相似文献

Porifera, commonly referred to as marine sponges, are acknowledged as major producers of marine natural products (MNPs). Sponges of the genus Phorbas have attracted much attention over the years. They are widespread in all continents, and several structurally unique compounds have been identified from this species. Terpenes, mainly sesterterpenoids, are the major secondary metabolites isolated from Phorbas species, even though several alkaloids and steroids have also been reported. Many of these compounds have presented interesting biological activities. Particularly, Phorbas sponges have been demonstrated to be a source of cytotoxic metabolites. In addition, MNPs exhibiting cytostatic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities have been isolated and structurally characterized. This review provides an overview of almost 130 secondary metabolites from Phorbas sponges and their biological activities, and it covers the literature since the first study published in 1993 until November 2021, including approximately 60 records. The synthetic routes to the most interesting compounds are briefly outlined. 相似文献

A transition from metal-like double-layer capacitive charging to redox-like charging was observed in electrochemical ensemble Coulomb staircase experiments on solutions of gold nanoparticles of varied core size. The monodisperse gold nanoparticles are stabilized by short-chain alkanethiolate monolayers and have 8 to 38 kilodaltons core mass (1.1 to 1.9 nanometers in diameter). Larger cores display Coulomb staircase responses consistent with double-layer charging of metal-electrolyte interfaces, whereas smaller core nanoparticles exhibit redox chemical character, including a large central gap. The change in behavior is consistent with new near-infrared spectroscopic data showing an emerging gap between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied orbitals of 0.4 to 0.9 electron volt. 相似文献
