Grain protein concentration (GPC) is an important quality factor in durum wheat [Triticum turgidum (L.) var. durum]. Due to the strong environmental influence on GPC, molecular markers linked to quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting GPC have the potential to be valuable in wheat breeding programs. Various quantitative traits in a population of 133 recombinant inbred chromosome lines were studied in replicated trials at three locations in North Dakota. Segregation for GPC, 1000-kernel weight, gluten strength, heading date, and plant height was observed. By relating phenotypic data to a linkage map obtained from the same population, three QTL affecting GPC, and one affecting yield were identified. Abstract: Stakeholders are an integral part of environmental conflict. Analysing the positions and interests of stakeholders is vital in effective environmental conflict management. This paper reviews the literature related to stakeholders and their dynamics in environmental conflict. It also presents the results of a study relating to a New Zealand transport infrastructure project where the positions and interests of stakeholders have kept on changing during the life of the project. This study plots the changing positions of some of the key stakeholders, towards this project. These stakeholders include a policy manager, a community stakeholder, an environmental stakeholder and a political stakeholder. The dispossession of urban communities across class and racial lines is a global phenomenon linked to the expansion of international investment in the development of ‘exemplary’ city space. However, city evictions are also historically informed and gendered processes which are continuous with past colonial and postcolonial urban rationalisation projects. Drawing on testimonies of women evictees in Jakarta, as well as interviews with public housing managers, this article details the gendered nature of the rationalisation of urban life in the context of a contemporary evictions regime. We argue that the rationalisation of urban space serves to sharpen the gender order by placing material constraints on women's roles, limiting their economic activities and defining them as hygiene‐responsible housewives. Further, and in turn, the limited provision of ‘rusunawa’ public housing, which we show to be a gendered spatial and social transition informed by state doctrine on the family, provides the state with justification for dispossession itself. Finally, women's everyday acts of refusal and resistance show not only that kampung forms of social life continue to be preserved in Jakarta, but also that rationalisation itself is a negotiated and contingent process. 相似文献

As the competition for the finite water resources on earth increases due to growth in population and affluence, agriculture
is faced with intensifying pressure to improve the efficiency of water used for food production. The causes for the relatively
low water use efficiency in agriculture are numerous and complex, including environmental, biological, engineering, management,
social, and economic facets. The complexity of the problem, with its myriads of local variations, requires a comprehensive
conceptual framework of the underlying physical and biological processes as the basis to analyze the existing situation and
quantify the efficiencies, and to plan and execute improvements. This paper proposes such a framework, based on the simple
fact that the overall efficiency of any process consisting of a chain of sequential step is the product of the efficiency
(i.e., output/input ratio) of its individual component steps. In most cases of water use, a number of process chains, both
branching and merging, are involved. Means to integrate the diverging and converging chains are developed and presented as
equations. Upscaling from fields to regions and beyond are discussed. This chain of efficiencies approach is general and can
be applied to any process composed of chains of sequential steps. Here the framework is used to analyze the systems of irrigated
and dryland crop production, and animal production on rangeland. Range of plausible efficiencies of each step is presented
as tables, with values separately for the poor and for the good situation of circumstances, management and technology. Causes
of the differences in efficiency of each step, going from water delivery to soil water extraction, transpiration, photosynthesis,
and conversion to crop biomass and yield, and to animal product are briefly discussed. Sample calculations are made to demonstrate
how modest differences in the efficiencies of the component steps are manifested as large to huge differences in the overall
efficiency. Based on an equation quantifying the impact of changes in efficiency of component steps on the overall efficiency,
it is concluded that generally, it is more effective to made modest improvements in several or more steps than to concentrate
efforts to improve one or two steps. Hence, improvement efforts should be systematic and not overly concentrated on one or
two components. The potential use of the same equation as the point of departure to optimize the allocation of economic resource
among the component steps to maximize the improvement in the overall water use efficiency is elaborated on. The chain of efficiencies
framework provides the means to examine the current levels of efficiency along the pathways of agricultural water use, to
analyze where inefficiencies lie by comparing with the range of known efficiency values in the tables presented, to assess
the potential improvements that may be achieved in various parts and their impact on the overall efficiency, and to aid in
the optimal allocation of resources for improvements.

The nonenzymatic oxidation of polyphenols bearing di- and trihydroxyphenol groups results in the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H?O?), a reactive oxygen species that can potentially compromise the oxidative stability of foods and beverages. An investigation of the factors that promote the oxidation of a model polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), was undertaken in a model lipid-based food system. Factors affecting oxidative stability, such as exogenous iron chelators (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; EDTA and 2,2-bipyridine; BPY) and pH (3 and 7) were evaluated in hexadecane and flaxseed oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions. At neutral pH, H?O? levels were observed to rise rapidly in hexadecane emulsions except for EDTA-containing treatments. However, EDTA-containing samples showed the highest rate of EGCG oxidation, suggesting that H?O? was rapidly reduced to hydroxyl radicals (HO?). Conversely, at pH 3, H?O? concentrations were lower across all treatments. EDTA conferred the highest degree of EGCG stability, with no loss of the catechin over the course of the study. In order to assess whether or not the H?O? production seen in oxidatively stable hexadecane emulsions translated to pro-oxidant activity in an oxidatively labile food lipid system, the effect of EGCG on the stability of flaxseed o/w emulsions was studied. EGCG displayed antioxidant activity at pH 7 throughout the study; however at pH 3, pro-oxidant activity was seen in EGCG-containing emulsions, with and without BPY. This study attempts to provide a mechanistic understanding of the conditions wherein polyphenols simultaneously exert pro-oxidant and antioxidant behavior in lipid dispersions. 相似文献

The oviposition pheromone of Culex quinquefasciatus was synthesized in a racemic form in a simple (five steps), efficient, high yielding (45% total yield), and low cost way (use of relatively low cost reagents). Our synthetic racemic pheromone (SRP) was tested in the laboratory for its bioactivity on Culex pipiens biotype molestus, which is a member of the species complex that Culex quinquefasciatusbelongs. In the testing conditions, bioactivity at the doses of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 microg per cage was found with the best bioactivity achieved at 1 mug per cage. The effectiveness of our SRP offers a capable tool for improving mosquito oviposition traps for surveillance or even control programs. 相似文献

Chlorophyll fluorescence spectral analysis permits detection, monitoring, and evaluation of abiotic stresses upon healthy plants using illumination of a light source in the UV?CVIS spectral range. This technique indirectly assesses the amount of physiological stress caused by photosynthetic damage, specifically damage to photosystem II, in plants. The objective of this study was to detect the toxicity of cadmium in maize plants via spectral analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence. The analysis is noninvasive and nondestructive and is used to follow the temporal evolution of changes in the chlorophyll content and physiological state of Zea mays L. seedlings under cadmium stress. Conventional techniques were also used to evaluate the dry matter production and Cd accumulation in plant leaves. Plants exhibited a notable reduction in dry matter production and chlorophyll levels with the administration of increasing doses of Cd in the nutrient solution. The fluorescence analysis was sensitive to changes caused by Cd in maize plants, detecting damage caused by different treatments before visual symptoms were observed. This technique has a practical application and produces rapid results that can be used in the evaluation of Cd-induced stress in plants and the detection of areas contaminated by this element. 相似文献

Semolina from four durum wheat genotypes (cvs. Ben, Munich, Rugby, and Vic) were processed into spaghetti that was dried by low (LT), high (HT), and ultrahigh (UHT) temperature drying cycles. Starch was isolated from dried pasta and unprocessed wheat and semolina references. Pasta-drying cycles had no significant effect on the amylose content of starches. Significant increases in enzyme-resistant starch were observed in HT- and UHT-dried pasta (2.27 and 2.51%, respectively) compared with LT-dried pasta (1.68%). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) gelatinization characteristics of pasta starches showed a significantly narrow range (Tr), but no changes in onset and peak temperatures (To and Tp, respectively) and gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH1) were observed. When compared with unprocessed reference samples (wheat and semolina), all pasta starches shifted to higher gelatinization To and Tp, with narrow Tr and no changes in δH1. The second endothermic DSC peak indicated no increase in amylose-lipid complexation (δH2) due to drying cycle. Starches isolated from LT and HT pasta exhibited lower peak viscosities than those from UHT-dried pasta.
