  • 1. The complex life cycle of endangered European freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera L. involves an obligatory parasitic phase on a host fish. Knowledge on the host–parasite interaction and on the suitability of different host fish species and strains is required both for the management of wild fish and mussel populations as well as for improving the efficiency of captive breeding methods.
  • 2. In this study, the suitability of different salmonid strains for hosting glochidia was tested, including Danube salmon (Hucho hucho L.) and three brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) strains from inside and outside the freshwater pearl mussel distribution range. All brown trout strains as well as Danube salmon were successfully infected with freshwater pearl mussel glochidia and encystment of mussel larvae was detected.
  • 3. One brown trout strain originating from the natural pearl mussel distribution range was identified as the most suitable host, revealing the highest fish‐weight‐normalized infection rates and highest glochidial growth rates, whereas endemic Danube salmon was least suitable. Under natural conditions, the role of Danube salmon may be attributed to the long‐distance dispersal of glochidia in the Danube system, whereas sedentary brown trout appear to be the most important hosts at a local scale.
  • 4. Successful infection of suitable hosts and the maintenance of these host–parasite systems in calcareous water were demonstrated in this study. These results indicate that neither the infection process nor the encystment phase of freshwater pearl mussels is dependent on low lime concentrations.
  • 5. The results of this study suggest that careful selection and management of appropriate host fish strains is mandatory for sustainable conservation management of freshwater pearl mussel populations. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Many fruit and nut species require cold temperatures during the dormancy season to initiate flowering and bear fruit. Quantifying these chilling requirements is crucial for identifying appropriate cultivars for a given site, for timing applications of rest-breaking chemicals and for predicting consequences of climate change. We present a new method to test temperature models describing chilling and heat requirements of perennial plants, and use this method to compare the ability of four chilling models (Chilling Hours, Utah Model, Positive Utah Model and Dynamic Model) to explain walnut phenology in California. When plotting remaining heat before a phenological stage is reached against accumulated winter chill, observational curves for all years should intersect in one common point, assuming fixed chilling and heat requirements and a sequential fulfillment of these requirements. This point defines the chilling and forcing requirements of the plant, and the quality of the chilling/heat model combination is indicated by how well defined the intersection point is.We used this method on a total of 1297 phenological observations, including four walnut cultivars, seven phenological stages and eight locations in California. Using an hourly temperature record, winter chill was quantified by the four chilling models and remaining heat was estimated using the Growing Degree Hour concept. The theoretical intersection point was more clearly defined for the Dynamic and Positive Utah Models than for the Chilling Hours and Utah Models in almost all cases, indicating that these are superior in explaining walnut phenology. It was also apparent that chilling models were not equivalent and that chilling requirements determined under constant temperature conditions, when quantified in Chilling Hours, were not representative of chilling requirements in orchards.  相似文献

Silaffins are uniquely modified peptides that have been implicated in the biogenesis of diatom biosilica. A method that avoids the harsh anhydrous hydrogen fluoride treatment commonly used to dissolve biosilica allows the extraction of silaffins in their native state. The native silaffins carry further posttranslational modifications in addition to their polyamine moieties. Each serine residue was phosphorylated, and this high level of phosphorylation is essential for biological activity. The zwitterionic structure of native silaffins enables the formation of supramolecular assemblies. Time-resolved analysis of silica morphogenesis in vitro detected a plastic silaffin-silica phase, which may represent a building material for diatom biosilica.  相似文献

It has been discovered during the past few years that demosponges of the order Verongida such as Aplysina cavernicola exhibit chitin-based skeletons. Verongida sponges are well known to produce bioactive brominated tyrosine derivatives. We could recently demonstrate that brominated compounds do not exclusively occur in the cellular matrix but also in the skeletons of the marine sponges Aplysina cavernicola and Ianthella basta. Our measurements imply that these yet unknown compounds are strongly, possibly covalently bound to the sponge skeletons. In the present work, we determined the skeletal amino acid composition of the demosponge A. cavernicola especially with respect to the presence of halogenated amino acids. The investigations of the skeletons before and after MeOH extraction confirmed that only a small amount of the brominated skeleton-bound compounds dissolves in MeOH. The main part of the brominated compounds is strongly attached to the skeletons but can be extracted for example by using Ba(OH)2. Various halogenated tyrosine derivatives were identified by GC-MS and LC-MS in these Ba(OH)2 extracts of the skeletons.  相似文献
