A biosynthetic experiment with mevalonic acid labeled with carbon-14 showed that the nudibranch Dendrodoris limbata elaborates polygodial, a sesquiterpenoid dialdehyde stored in the mantle, which constitutes its chemical defense against predators. Irregular plagues of house mice, Mus musculus, incur major economic impacts on agricultural production in Australia. The efficacy of zinc phosphide (ZnP), the only registered broadacre control agent for mice, is reported as increasingly variable. Have mice become less sensitive over time or are they taking a sub-lethal dose and developing aversion? In this laboratory study, the sensitivity of mice (wild caught; outbred laboratory strain) was assessed using oral gavage of a range of ZnP concentrations. The estimated LD50 values (72–79 mg ZnP/kg body weight) were similar for each mouse group but are significantly higher than previously reported. The willingness of mice to consume ZnP-coated grains was determined. ZnP-coated grains (50 g ZnP/kg grain) presented in the absence of alternative food were consumed and 94% of wild mice died. Mice provided with alternative food and ZnP-coated wheat grains (either 25 or 50 g ZnP/kg grain) consumed toxic and non-toxic grains, and mortality was lower (33–55%). If a sublethal amount of ZnP-coated grain was consumed, aversion occurred, mostly when alternative food was present. The sensitivity of wild house mice to ZnP in Australia is significantly lower than previously assumed. Under laboratory conditions, ZnP-coated grains coated with a new higher dose (50 g ZnP/kg grain) were readily consumed. Consumption of toxic grain occurred when alternative food was available but was decreased. Our unambiguous findings for house mice indicate a re-assessment of the ZnP loading for baits used for control of many rodents around the world may be warranted.  相似文献

Breeding for resistance to Globodera pallida, at the International Potato Center (CIP), is directed at pathotypes P4A and P5A. The polygenic nature of resistance and the variability of pathotypes complicate breeding and testing for resistance. Recurrent selection for resistance genes and for agronomic characteristics is used to increase resistant gene frequency in potato populations. Mass seedling screening, as an early indicator of segregation ratios in a progeny, and a petri-plate technique for accurate assessment of resistance in potato clones have proven to be useful aids in selecting for resistance. Clones with partial resistance could be grown by farmers under certain conditions; partial resistance may also be useful in breeding programmes. New differential or tester clones which are better adapted and resistant to P5A populations should be utilized in the Andean region. Although Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena has been the main source of resistance, especially to pathotype P5A, the CIP breeding programme should now turn to wild species in order to broaden the base of resistance.  相似文献

Abstract. The reservoir fishery of China is essentially a post-1950 development. China has an estimated reservoir acreage of 2 × 106ha of which about 1.44 × 1O6ha is used for fisheries. The present reservoir fish production averages 214kg/ha/year and accounts for about 8-9% of the total inland fish production, which is around 4.0 × 1O6mt. The total reservoir fish production and production per unit area in China have been steadily increasing since 1980.
The Cwhinese reservoir fishery is essentially a stock and capture fishery. The reservoir management practices and aspects of the present fishery are discussed. Those practices which are not found in the rest of Asia are highlighted.  相似文献

Inter-individual variation in drug serum protein binding was studied in healthy dogs and in dogs with inflammatory diseases for lidocaine, oxprenolol and propranolol, which bind mainly to alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (alpha 1-AGP), and for diazepam, digitoxin and phenytoin, which bind mainly to albumin. For the drugs mostly bound to alpha 1-AGP, in both groups of dogs binding varied considerably, and it was markedly higher in dogs with inflammatory disease. For the other drugs, the variation in binding was smaller and did not differ between the two groups of dogs. In both groups of dogs, the alpha 1-AGP concentration varied widely; it was higher in the serum of the dogs with inflammation, while the concentration of albumin was lower in these animals. There was a significant negative correlation between percentage free lidocaine, oxprenolol or propranolol and alpha 1-AGP concentration, suggesting that the inter-individual variation in binding of these drugs is due to the variation in alpha 1-AGP concentration. There was a marked intra-individual variation in lidocaine binding and in serum alpha 1-AGP concentration, studied over a period of 3 weeks in healthy dogs; a significant negative correlation between percentage free lidocaine and alpha 1-AGP concentration was obtained.  相似文献

The basic principles of the electrophoretic behaviour of humic substances (HS) still need to be systematically investigated. HS extracted from a Cryorthod (HS–1) and from an Haplumbrept (HS–2) were first fractionated by ultrafiltration to obtain two series of fractions of reduced polydispersity with a nominal mean relative molecular mass (M) of 7500, 20000, 40000, 75000 and 200 000 Da. Fractions extracted from the same soil behaved like an homologous series when tested by size exclusion chromatography, showing a linear relation of M with molecular size. When plotted against their mean M, the elution volumes of HS fractions extracted from the two different soils originated lines of different slope. Absolute electrophoretic mobilities of the fractions were determined in polyacrylamide gel slabs of increasing polyacrylamide concentration using a single buffer system; in all gels there was a close linear relation between the electrophoretic mobility and the logarithm of the mean M of HS fractions. Extrapolation of mobilities of HS–1 at zero gel concentration gave intercepts that did not differ significantly, showing that there was a constant mobility for all fractions in free solution. These results mean that charge differences have little effect on the electrophoretic mobilities of HS extracted from the same soil and imply the theoretical possibility of determining M distributions of HS by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in a single buffer system. Mobilities of HS–2 fractions were compared with those of HS–1: the latter fitted the regression equations of mobility against logarithm of the molecular weight obtained from HS–1 humic substances only in gels of small acrylamide concentration. Deviations were larger at small M, probably because of the increasing fulvic character of the fractions, and increased in gels of greater acrylamide concentration, indicating that charge differences may not be negligible when comparing humic substances extracted from different soils.  相似文献
