B-vitamin supplementation of diets for feedlot calves   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
B-vitamin supplementation of diets for 144 shipping-stressed crossbred calves (116 kg) at levels up to 10 times that recommended for growing pigs did not influence (P greater than .20) weight gain or feed conversion during a 56-d receiving trial. However, vitamin supplementation tended (P less than .10) to reduce morbidity. In a second trial, supplemental B-vitamins had no effect (P greater than .20) on efficiency of microbial growth or site and extent of digestion of organic matter, acid detergent fiber and N. Supplemental dietary riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, B12 and ascorbic acid were largely metabolized [degraded and (or) absorbed] anterior to the small intestine, with escape values of 1, 3, 10 and 0% of added vitamins, respectively, while dietary B6 and biotin largely escaped the rumen. Thiamine and pantothenic acid were intermediate in ruminal escape (52 and 22%, respectively). Small intestinal absorption of thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, B6 and B12 averaged 75, 79, 25, 79 and 48%, respectively. Coefficients for ruminal escape and microbial synthesis for each B-vitamin were calculated using the slope-ratio technique. Measured flows for thiamine, riboflavin and B12 in a third experiment were similar to flows predicted from escape and synthesis equations, though flow of niacin and B6 were under-predicted by 37 and 44%, respectively. Results are interpreted to indicate that intestinal B-vitamin supply can be predicted based on dietary composition and intake.  相似文献

Infrared thermography was evaluated as a technique to determine if raccoons (Procyon lotor) experimentally infected with rabies virus could be differentiated from noninfected raccoons. Following a 10-day adjustment period, raccoons (n = 6) were infected with a virulent rabies street strain raccoon variant by injection into the masseter muscle at a dose of 2 x 10(4) tissue-culture infectious dose (TCID50) in 0.2 ml (n = 4) or 10(5) TCID50 in 1 ml (n = 2). Five of the six raccoons developed prodromal signs of rabies 17 to 22 days postinoculation (PI) and distinctive clinical signs of furious rabies between 19 and 24 days PI. At the time of euthanasia, which occurred 2 days after the onset of clinical signs of rabies, these five raccoons tested positive for rabies virus in brain tissue. Infrared thermal images of each raccoon were recorded twice daily during the preinoculation and PI periods. No apparent differences were identified among thermal temperatures compared among days for the eye, average body surface, and body temperature recorded from subcutaneous implants throughout the experiment for any of the six raccoons. However, increases in infrared surface temperature of the noses and differences in the visual thermal images of the noses were detected when animals began showing clinical signs of rabies. Differences were detected among the mean infrared nose temperatures for the disease progression intervals (F3.12 = 70.03, P < 0.0001). The mean nose temperature in the clinical rabies stage (30.4 +/- 3.5 degrees C) was significantly elevated over the prodromal stage (F1,12 = 151.85, P < 0.0001). This experiment provides data indicating that infrared thermography can be used in an experimental setting to detect raccoons in the infectious stage and capable of exhibiting clinical signs of rabies.  相似文献

A 194-year annual record of skeletal delta(18)O from a coral growing at Malindi, Kenya, preserves a history of sea surface temperature (SST) change that is coherent with instrumental and proxy records of tropical Pacific climate variability over interannual to decadal periods. This variability is superimposed on a warming of as much as 1.3 degrees C since the early 1800s. These results suggest that the tropical Pacific imparts substantial decadal climate variability to the western Indian Ocean and, by implication, may force decadal variability in other regions with strong El Nino-Southern Oscillation teleconnections.  相似文献

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV‐3) or koi herpesvirus (KHV) is a virulent viral infection in common carp and koi. The disease has caused global epizootic and economic loss in fish aquaculture and in the wild. Clinacanthus nutans (Burm. f.) Lindau is a well‐known medicinal plant used in Thai traditional medicine. Virucidal effects of the plant extract against human herpes simplex virus have been reported. In this study, C. nutans crude extract was tested for antiviral activities against CyHV‐3 in koi carp. Results showed effective antiviral activity against CyHV‐3 pre‐ and post‐infection. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) of extract was higher than 5 mg/ml. The 50% effective dose (ED50) was 0.99 mg/ml, 0.78 mg/ml, 0.75 mg/ml and 0.71 mg/ml at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hr pre‐infection, respectively. The ED50 from post‐infection tests was 2.05 mg/ml and 2.34 mg/ml at 0 and 24 hr, respectively. These results demonstrated that crude extract expressed antiviral activity against CyHV‐3 and can be applied as a therapeutic agent in common carp and koi aquaculture.  相似文献

The evolution of unusually large brains in some groups of animals, notably primates, has long been a puzzle. Although early explanations tended to emphasize the brain's role in sensory or technical competence (foraging skills, innovations, and way-finding), the balance of evidence now clearly favors the suggestion that it was the computational demands of living in large, complex societies that selected for large brains. However, recent analyses suggest that it may have been the particular demands of the more intense forms of pairbonding that was the critical factor that triggered this evolutionary development. This may explain why primate sociality seems to be so different from that found in most other birds and mammals: Primate sociality is based on bonded relationships of a kind that are found only in pairbonds in other taxa.  相似文献

Summary The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect polymorphisms among 29 diploid clones of Musa acuminata Colla. from Papua New Guinea. Primer sequences were derived from a 520 bp highly repetitive DNA sequence isolated from M. acuminata ssp. malaccensis. Primers, used individually, detected a total of 48 polymorphisms that were scored as unit characters and used to generate a Jaccard's similarity index. Principal coordinate analysis (PCO) was used to cluster clones and the unweighted paired-group method of analysis (UPGMA) was used to compute genetic distance among the materials examined. The abundance of diversity within the PNG diploids examined reflects the extreme genetic variability within the M. acuminata gene pool. PCR, utilizing primers from a highly repetitive sequence, is a rapid means of detecting genetic diversity in M. acuminata.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects of nine nitro and/or bromo-substituted benzonitrile compounds on the photosynthetic electron flow in isolated chloroplasts and on the in vivo CO2 fixation of spinach (Spinacia oteracea L.) and wheat (Triticum aesticum L. cv. Bezoslaya) were investigated. Bromoxynil and 3-nitro-5-hromo-4-hydroxy-bcnzonitrile were the strongest and equally effective inhibitors of Ihe in vivo CO2 fixation of spinach, hut in wheat the nitro-bromo-compound is ineffective and 3-nitro-benzonitrile is even more inhibitory than bromoxynil. None of the substances affected DCPIPH → methylviologen reduction. In the inhibition of the DCPIP reduction only the 3,5-disuhstituted 4-hydroxy-derivatives were effective. The fact that these compounds affect only the PS II reaction with both H2O and DPC as electron donors suggests a site of inhibition on the reducing side of PS II, between Ihe PS II reaction centre and ihe DCPIP Site. It is suggested that in the inhibition of the DCPIP reduction only steric factors are important and the different electron configuration of the sterieally similar molecules may be involved only in the absorption and translocation processes of the compounds.  相似文献
