Forest fires: An example of self-organized critical behavior   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Despite the many complexities concerning their initiation and propagation, forest fires exhibit power-law frequency-area statistics over many orders of magnitude. A simple forest fire model, which is an example of self-organized criticality, exhibits similar behavior. One practical implication of this result is that the frequency-area distribution of small and medium fires can be used to quantify the risk of large fires, as is routinely done for earthquakes.  相似文献

Establishment of the temperature-salinity relationship in the ocean has concerned oceanographers for decades because of its importance for understanding ocean circulation. High-resolution measurements in the ocean mixed layer are used to show that temperature and salinity gradients on horizontal scales of 20 meters to 10 kilometers tend to compensate in their effect on density. These observations support the notion of a horizontal mixing in the mixed layer that depends on density gradient.  相似文献

Mineral deficiencies can seriously reduce crop yield and economic returns to farmers. Reflectance measurements may provide inexpensive and fast estimates of the mineral status of plants. This study was conducted to examine specific changes of leaf reflectance due to nutrient deficiencies. During the 1998 and 1999 growing seasons leaf scans of N‐, P‐, Mg‐, and Fe‐deficient corn plants were performed with a digital LEICA S1 PRO camera under controlled light conditions. Leaf scans were evaluated with the L*a*b*‐color system. This is a three‐dimensional system with parameter a* describing the green/red percentage and parameter b* the blue/yellow percentage of a color. L* represents the lightness of a color. The a* and b* parameters provided good prediction of N, P, Mg, and Fe status of the plants in the wavelength ranges of 380—390 nm, 430—780 nm, 516—780 nm, 516—IR, and 540—600 nm because reflectance changed specifically due to the nutrient deficiency. Analyses of water‐soluble and propanol‐soluble pigments showed no significant changes in absorbance during latent deficiency. The results indicate that reflectance measurements may provide a powerful tool for the specific detection of latent nutrient deficiencies in corn plants.  相似文献

The fraction of nonexchangeable ammonium (NH4+) can play an important role in N cycling of soils as a sink (fixation) or a source (release) of NH4+. Recently fixed nonexchangeable NH4+ especially seems to be a significant source for N release. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of residence time on the kinetics of nonexchangeable NH4+ release from illite and vermiculite. Calcium-saturated illite and vermiculite, containing NH4+ that was “fixed” for one and 60 d, were extracted with a H-resin for 0.25 to 384 h. Both clay minerals “fixed” significantly more NH4+ in 60 d than in 1 d, but vermiculite “fixed” more NH4+ than illite. The kinetics of nonexchangeable NH4+ release from illite and vermiculite were well described by the Elovich equation and by a heterogeneous diffusion model. In vermiculite the percentage of nonexchangeable NH4+ release decreased from 84% to 78% when the time of fixation increased from 1 to 60 d. In illite time of residence has not influenced the complete release of newly fixed NH4+.  相似文献

This study was conducted to measure the concentration of cefquinome in the endometrium of mares after intrauterine treatment and to evaluate associated inflammation. Mares (n = 14) were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: (i) control (n = 4) were either not treated (n = 2) or received (n = 2) lactated Ringer's intrauterine for 1 or 3 days; (ii) treated mares (n = 10) received intrauterine cefquinome for 1 or 3 days. After at least 10 days had passed following the last treatment and ovulation, mares were given Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and were randomly assigned to an alternate treatment. Endometrial biopsy samples were taken at 2, 8, 24 and 48 h, or at 4, 12 and 36 h, after the last treatment. Biopsy samples were taken at the same time points from control mares (n = 2) and lactated Ringer-treated mares (n = 2). Cefquinome concentrations were quantified using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay and inflammation was assessed using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained sections. Concentrations of cefquinome [559 (1 day) and 595 μg/g (3 days) at 2 h, and 403 (1 day) and 370 μg/g (3 days) at 4 h] were similar between treatment groups at 2 and 4 h after treatment (p > 0.05). At 8 h, as well as at 24 and 48 h, concentrations were greater in the 3-day group (17 vs 301 μg/g, 3 vs 80 μg/g and 0.1 vs 0.2 μg/g, respectively) (p < 0.05). No significant differences (p > 0.05) in the inflammatory response at 2–48 h after treatment were found between groups.  相似文献

Objective To investigate factors associated with low vitamin D status of alpacas at pasture in southern Australia. Design A 2‐year survey of alpacas from two farms in South Australia and three in Victoria. Blood samples were collected from 20 to 30 alpacas on each farm on five occasions each year. Breed, gender, age and fleece colour of animals were recorded. Method Blood samples were assayed for plasma 2.5‐hydroxycholecalciferol (25‐OH D3) and plasma inorganic phosphorus (Pi). Data sets from 802 animal samples were analysed by multiple regression to determine variables associated with low vitamin D status of alpacas. The relationship between plasma 25‐OH D3 and plasma Pi was also investigated. Results Vitamin D status was significantly affected by month of sampling, with low values in late winter and high values in summer. Plasma vitamin D concentrations increased with age, were higher in alpacas with light fleeces than in those with dark fleeces and were also higher in the Suri than in the Huacaya breed. Plasma Pi concentrations were generally lower in alpacas with plasma 25‐OH D3 values < 25 nmol/L. Conclusions Young alpacas with dark fleeces are most at risk from vitamin D insufficiency in late winter in southern Australia. The present study indicates that plasma Pi values are not a reliable indicator of vitamin D status of alpacas as assessed by plasma 25‐OH D3 concentrations.  相似文献

The midgut of insects is involved in digestion, osmoregulation and immunity. Although several defensive strategies are present in this organ, its organization and function may be disturbed by some insecticidal agents, including bioactive proteins like lectins and protease inhibitors (PIs) from plants. PIs interfere with digestion, leading to poor nutrient absorption and decreasing amino acid bioavailability. Intake of PIs can delay development, cause deformities and reduce fertility. Ingestion of PIs may lead to changes in the set of proteases secreted in the insect gut, but this response is often insufficient and results in aggravation of the malnutrition status. Lectins are proteins that are able to interact with glycoconjugates, including those linked to cell surfaces. Their effects on the midgut include disruption of the peritrophic matrix, brush border and secretory cell layer; induction of apoptosis and oxidative stress; interference with nutrient absorption and transport proteins; and damaging effects on symbionts. In addition, lectins can cross the intestinal barrier and reach the hemolymph. The establishment of resistant insect populations due to selective pressure resulting from massive use of a bioactive protein is an actual possibility, but this can be minimized by the multiple mode‐of‐action of these proteins, mainly the lectins. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
