A measurement and interpretation on a molecular level of a phase transition in an ordered Langmuir monolayer is reported. The diagram of surface pressure (pi) versus molecular area of a monolayer of chiral (S)-[CF(3)-(CF(2))(9)-(CH(2))(2)-OCO-CH(2)-CH (NH(3)(+))CO(2)(-)] over water shows a change in slope at about pi(s)= 25 millinewtons per meter. Grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction and specular reflectivity measurements indicate a solid-solid phase transition at pi(s). The diffraction pattren at low pressures reveals two diffraction peaks of equal intensities, with lattice spacings d of 5.11 and 5.00 angstroms; these coalesce for pi >/=pi(s). Structural models that fit the diffraction data show that at pi> pi(s) the molecules pack in a two-dimensional crystal with the molecules aligned vertically. At pi < pi(s) there is a molecular tilt of 16 degrees +/- 7 degrees . Independent x-ray reflectivity data yield a tilt of 26 degrees +/- 7 degrees . Concomitant with the tilt, the diffraction data indicate a transition from a hexagonal to a distorted-hexagonal lattice. The hexagonal arrangement is favored because the -(CF(2))(9)CF(3) moiety adopts a helical conformation. Compression to 70 millinewtons per meter yields a unit cell with increased crystallinity and a coherence length exceeding 1000 angstroms. 相似文献

SummaryWe have developed a novel technique for grafting citrus seeds onto citrus rootstock plants that resulted in successful graft-take with normal vascular connections between the emerging seedling stem tissues and the rootstock plant. The method was found to be suitable for producing grafted plants from seeds of six cultivars and hybrids of Citrus and the citrus relative Murraya paniculata, using four common Citrus rootstocks. Plants produced by this method developed normally and were established in the field more rapidly than those produced by the common practice of grafting the rootstocks with budwood derived from seedlings prepared from seed in soil-based media. Seed grafting is expected to find a range of uses in breeding programmes; for example, by reducing the time required for the evaluation of hybrid seedlings, in cases where the female parent is mono-embryonic, for testing for vertical transmission of pathogens, and for screening for pathogen resistance among hybrid and mutagenised seed sources. 相似文献

The effect of intracerebral injections of the anticholinesterase drug diisopropyl fluorophosphate in rats was to produce good recall of an otherwise almost forgotten habit learned 28 days before. The same injections produced temporary amnesia for the same habit, otherwise well remembered, learned 14 days before. The injections had no ef fect on the memory of the same habit when it was only partly learned 14 days before. Capillary barriers (CBs) occur at the interface between two soil layers having distinct differences in hydraulic characteristics. In preliminary work without growing crops, it was demonstrated that CBs implemented in sandy soils increased hydrostatic volumetric water content by 20–70%, depending on soil texture and depth of barrier insertion. We hypothesized that the introduction of an artificial CB at the lower root-zone boundary of horticultural crops can increase yields as a result of increased water content and uptake efficiency. The effects of introduced CBs on soil water content, plant growth, and yields of bell peppers (Capsicum annum L), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculantum L.), and melons (Cucumis melo L.) were studied in a desert environment in southern Israel. Inclusion of a CB increased soil water content by 60% and biomass and fruit yields by 25% for pepper, and increased matric head and biomass yield by 80 and 36%, respectively, for lettuce. Neither tomatoes nor melons reacted significantly to the presence of CBs, in spite of increased soil moisture. Daily soil matric head amplitude was reduced fivefold when lettuce was grown with a CB. Spatial variability was highly reduced when a CB was present. When peppers were grown with a CB, the standard deviations of water content and biomass yield were reduced by 40% relative to control. 相似文献

Recruitment, migration, growth, longevity and reproduction of Penaeus (Melicertus) japonicus Bate along the south-east coast of the Mediterranean were investigated.Relative population density, measured by catch per unit effort and average body length of the population were used in studying the recruitment, migration and growth of the various age groups.The reproductive state of the females was examined using three parameters: (1) gonado somatic index (ovary weight/total weight); (2) average diameter of ova; (3) morphological appearance of the ova according to a three stage scale.The results showed that P. japonicus migrates from inshore waters to the open sea during its benthic life cycle.Penaeus japonicus is distributed only on sandy substrate. It is suggested that the width of the longshore sandy strip determines the duration of the migration and hence the longevity and maximal growth of the individuals. Rate of migration might be accelerated by increasing density of young age groups near the shore. The estimated life span of each age group is 28–29 months. The maximal average body length of the population is 17 cm for males and 20 cm for females.Penaeus japonicus reproduce from April to November. This period corresponds to the appearance of a new age group about one kilometer offshore.The morphological appearance of the ova, average ovum diameter in each ovary and the female gonado-somatic index (GSI) are related to each other and can serve as a maturation index.Mature females are characterized by body length > 14 cm, GSI > 0.085 and average ovum diameter > 296 μ. 相似文献

In an auditory or musical task, subjects made pitch recognition judgments when the tones to be compared were separated by a sequence of interpolated tones. The left-handed subjects performed significantly better than the right-handed and also had a significantly higher variance.
