Paleosols of the S coastal plain of Israel were studied in a characteristic sequence situated in the Ruhama badlands area. At the upper part of the sequence, there is a Loessial Arid Brown Soil (Calciorthids), characteristic of the mildly arid climate of the area. The soil has two calcic horizons and four clayey layers alternating with four calcareous layers which are beneath them. Physical, chemical, and magnetic‐susceptibility data and micromorphological evidence indicate that each clayey layer together with the calcareous layer beneath it forms a single pedogenic unit. These units are similar to modern Grumusolic soils (Xeric Paleargids or Xererthic Calciargids) that occur in the semiarid belt of the S coastal plain and develop on eolian‐dust parent material. The calcareous layers are in fact calcic horizons formed by leaching of the carbonates from the clayey layers and accumulated in the form of in situ carbonate nodules. The leaching of the carbonates is not complete; they were never completely leached in the past. This feature together with a typical brown color is also characteristic of the modern soils developed in the semiarid water regime of the area. The four superimposed paleosols represent four cycles. It is suggested that they were formed in two phases. During a dry environment, a short phase of rapid eolian‐dust accumulation prevailed, followed by a stable phase of soil development in a somewhat wetter climate. Dating by optically stimulated luminescence and previous dating by 14C in the area suggest that the upper two paleosol cycles belong to the Last Glacial period whereas the other two cycles are of an earlier age. The magnetic‐susceptibility values decrease with age and react different from temperate areas. Below the four cycles, two totally leached paleosols developed on sandy parent material occur. Both paleosols have a reversed magnetic polarity and are hence older than 780 ky BP. The upper one is a Brown Mediterranean soil, and the lower one is a Red Mediterranean soil. In this study we have examined the effects of irrigation with municipal secondary-treated effluents on growth of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and celosia (Celosia argentea var cristata L.) plants for cut flower production. The applied treated effluents contained higher levels of Na (∼X6), Cl (∼X4.5), N–NH4 (30–50 mg/l), B, HCO3, P, K, and Fe than the potable water. The effect of the two types of irrigation water on the chemical composition of soil and leaves, flower yield and postharvest performance was examined. Our results demonstrate higher accumulation of Cl, Na, B, and NO3 in soils irrigated with effluents as compared to potable water only in the 40–60 cm soil layer. Phosphorus accumulated to higher levels in the upper soil layer (0–20 below ground), as well as in the lower soil layer, irrigated with effluents. SAR levels as well, were higher under irrigation with the treated effluents in the soil until 40 cm below ground indicating higher Na absorption in comparison to Ca and Mg. In both sunflower and celosia, boron accumulated to higher levels in leaves of plants irrigated with effluents. In addition, under irrigation with effluents, celosia accumulated higher levels of N and Mn and sunflower higher levels of P and lower levels of Fe. Despite these differences in mineral contents, the quality of the irrigation water did not affect cut flower yield. In both species spike length, receptacle size, number of flowers and flower weight were not affected. However, flowers’ quality, examined during vase life, was compromised by irrigation with the effluents. Celosia leaves appeared more yellow and sunflower petal edges became browner. Nevertheless, leaf yellowing in celosia occurred mainly on the lower leaves of the stem, which can be removed to maintain high commercial value. The reduction in sunflower quality as well, will most likely not pose any commercial problem since these negative symptoms appeared at a late stage of vase life. Overall, our results demonstrate that secondary-treated municipal effluents can be used for production of sunflower and celosia for cut flowers, in the northern-eastern part of the ‘Negev’ desert in Israel. The sterol biosynthesis inhibitors bromuconazole and difenoconazole and tank mixes of each fungicide with captan were applied
to apples and evaluated as controls for moldy-core and fruit decay caused by Alternaria alternata. Effectiveness of a mixture of bromuconazole and captan in controlling colonization by the fungus was also evaluated. Decay
formation by A. alternata on mature detached fruits was partially inhibited by bromuconazole at 0.5 μg ml−1 and was completely inhibited at 50 μg ml−1; it was significantly affected by either bromoconazole at 5 μg ml−1 or captan at 1,250 μg ml−1, and was completely inhibited by their mixture. In general, three foliar applications of bromuconazole or difenoconazole
in the field, during the bloom period, reduced the numbers of infected fruits by 40–60% compared with untreated control trees.
However, tank mixes of either fungicide with captan improved control of moldy-core in fruits at harvest. Tank mixtures of
bromuconazole and captan also significantly reduced the percentage of fruits colonized by A. alternata when sampled at various days after full bloom. Artificial inoculations in the orchard at full bloom did not change the inhibitory
effects of the tank mixtures. Large-scale demonstration trials in commercial orchards supported these findings. The inhibitory
effects of tank mixes on decay development in detached fruits, and on moldy-core in the field indicate that a control programme
based on mixtures of either bromuconazole or difenoconazole with captan during the bloom period can effectively reduce moldy-core

Work is described showing that ethylene does not move about the plant in physiologically significant amounts due to resistance in the longitudinal direction and loss by emanation from the surface of the plant. Nevertheless, changes in ethylene concentration in one part of the plant may influence concentrations in other parts. It is shown that the partition coefficients for ethylene between air and various plant organs are relatively high and may change in the course of development. These results are discussed in relation to compartmentation of ethylene within the plant and the possible implications of such compartmentation for the control of plant growth and development. 相似文献

Benthiavalicarb is a new fungicide active against Oomycetes fungal plant pathogens. The present study shows that benthiavalicarb is effective for controlling the Oomycete fungal pathogen Plasmopara viticola, which causes downy mildew in grapevines. The fungicide did not affect zoospore discharge from sporangia of P. viticola, but strongly inhibited zoospore encystment, cystospore germination in vitro and mycelial growth, together with sporangial production in vivo. Benthiavalicarb showed strong prophylactic and local activity in intact plants or detached leaves and low translaminar activity. The compound was not translocated from leaf to leaf in either a acropetal or basipetal direction. Benthiavalicarb applied at 1, 3 and 6 days post-inoculation protected grapevine plants against downy mildew and inhibited sporulation of the pathogen. Similar results were obtained on leaf disks if benthiavalicarb was applied up to 96 h post-inoculation. Benthiavalicarb diminished the sporulation of P. viticola when applied to established disease in the tissue. Benthiavalicarb remained active on leaves for a period up to 28 days. Two foliar applications of benthiavalicarb, 2 weeks apart, to field-grown grapevines inhibited downy mildew development and were as effective as the standard metalaxyl-Cu treatment in controlling the disease. A formulated mixture of benthiavalicarb + Folpet was similar or superior in performance to metalaxyl-Cu and the new strobilurin trifloxystrobin in controlling downy mildew. The effectiveness of benthiavalicarb makes it well suited for integration into a control programme against downy mildew disease in vineyards, and as a component to delay resistance buildup. 相似文献

The effects of two training systems and row spacing on development of powdery mildew caused by Uncinula necator on clusters of 'Chardonnay' and 'Cabernet Sauvignon' grapevines were examined. Disease development was monitored in blocks with two different row spacing (2 and 3 m) in vertical shoot positioned vines (VSP) and in free-positioned, topped vines (FC) with no foliage support wires. The FC vines were hedged to about one meter shoot length. No fungicides were applied and disease powdery mildew level was recorded four to seven days after appearance of the first disease symptoms. During five consecutive years (1994–1998), disease incidence was higher in the VSP system than the FC vines. The difference was high when disease level was low (30% of the clusters in VSP vines infected, compared to 5% in the FC vines) and decreased when disease pressure was high (79% in VSP compared to 46% in FC vines). In the 'Cabernet Sauvignon', in four of the years, disease incidence was higher in the narrow spacing of 2 m between the rows than that in the wider 3 m spacing. Microclimate (temperature, relative humidity and light intensity) was monitored in the cluster zone near the spurs of 'Chardonnay' vines during three weeks in the 1998 season. In VSP vines light intensity was lower then that in FC vines both four and one week before disease symptoms appeared (72% and 18% respectively). The differences in temperature and relative humidity were less than 1°C and 3%, respectively, and most likely did not affect disease development. The results suggested that high light intensity is the primary factor, which limits powdery mildew growth development on field-grown grapevines in the Golan region of Israel. The use of the FC system might be useful in reducing the need of fungicides. 相似文献
