This study was designed to elucidate associations between energy metabolism and LH pulsatility characteristics in early lactation, and days to first ovulation, in order to explain the relationship between energy balance and fertility observed in epidemiological studies. To this end, 10 multiparous HF cows were monitored during lactation, after the application of two different feeding strategies during the dry period. Days to first ovulation was assessed using blood progesterone measurements and LH pulsatility was measured in 8-h windows in the third week postpartum. The association between depth of negative energy balance and days to ovulation was confirmed. However, this study does not support the idea that LH pulsatility characteristics in early lactation are predictive for the interval between parturition and first ovulation. 相似文献

Disease in animals is a well-known inhibitor of growth and reproduction. Earlier studies were initiated to determine the effects of endotoxin on pituitary hormone secretion. These studies found that in sheep, growth hormone (GH) concentration was elevated, whereas insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) was inhibited, as was luteinizing hormone (LH). Examination of the site of action of endotoxin in sheep determined that somatotropes expressed the endotoxin receptor (CD14) and that both endotoxin and interleukin-Iβ activated GH secretion directly from the pituitary. In the face of elevated GH, there is a reduction of IGF-I in all species examined. As GH cannot activate IGF-I release during disease, there appears to be a downregulation of GH signalling at the liver, perhaps related to altered nitration of Janus kinase (JAK). In contrast to GH downregulation, LH release is inhibited at the level of the hypothalamus. New insights have been gained in determining the mechanisms by which disease perturbs growth and reproduction, particularly with regard to nitration of critical control pathways, with this perhaps serving as a novel mechanism central to lipopolysaccharide suppression of all signalling pathways. This pathway-based analysis is critical to the developing novel strategies to reverse the detrimental effect of disease on animal production. 相似文献

In the light of an increasing demand for staple food, especially rice, in southeast China, investigations on the specific site potential expressed as the relationship between soil and crop yield parameters gain increasing importance. Soil texture and several soil chemical parameters as well as plant properties such as crop height, biomass and grain yield were investigated along two terraced catenas with contrasting soil textures cropped with wet rice. We were aiming at identifying correlative relationships between soil and crop properties. Data were analyzed both statistically and geostatistically on the basis of semivariograms. Statistical analysis indicated a significant influence of the relief position on the spatial distribution of soil texture, total carbon and total nitrogen contents. Significant correlations were found for the catena located in a sandstone area (Catena A) between rice yield and silt as well as total nitrogen content. Corresponding relationships were not detectable for paddy fields that developed from Quaternary clays (Catena B). As suggested by the nugget to sill ratio, spatial variability of soil texture, total carbon and nitrogen was mainly controlled by intrinsic factors, which might be attributed to the erosional transport of fine soil constituents, indicating the importance of the relief position and slope in soil development even in landscapes that are terraced. The crop parameters exhibited short ranges of influence and about one third of their variability was unexplained. Comparable ranges Of selected crop and soil parameters, found only for Catena A, are indicative of close spatial interactions between rice yield and soil features. Our findings show that especially in sandstone-dominated areas, a site-specific management can contribute to an environmentally safe rice production increase. 相似文献

The purpose of this research was to determine whether treatment with varying doses of recombinant equine follicle stimulating hormone (reFSH) stimulates the development of multiple follicles and ovulations and increases the number of embryos recovered in the mare. Therefore, because reFSH can be cloned in repeatable, sizeable quantities, it could be used as a tool to enhance superovulation in mares. In experiment 1, the number of preovulatory follicles, ovulations, and embryos recovered per flush was greater in the 0.85 mg reFSH group than in the control group; however, the embryo per ovulation rates were similar. Plasma inhibin and estradiol concentrations were greater in treated mares around the time of ovulation as compared with the control group, whereas concentrations of luteinizing hormone remained low throughout the treatment, ovulation, and postovulation. In treated mares, concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone increased during therapy and before ovulation, but decreased postovulation. In experiment 2, varying doses of reFSH (0.35, 0.50, and 0.65 mg) and 12.5 mg of Bioniche equine follicle stimulating hormone (eFSH) increased the number of preovulatory follicles as compared with control group. The greatest number of ovulations was induced by treatment with 12.5 mg eFSH, 0.5 mg reFSH, and 0.65 mg reFSH. The highest number of embryos recovered per flush was found with treatments of eFSH and 0.65 mg reFSH. However, the embryo per ovulation rates were similar in all treatment groups, including the control group. In experiment 3, reFSH (0.5 and 0.85 mg) and eFSH (12.5 mg) given twice daily showed a similar increase in the number of pre-ovulatory follicles and ovulations. A single daily treatment of reFSH (0.85 mg) as well as the twice daily dose of eFSH was determined to increase follicular activity. In conclusion, reFSH was as effective as eFSH in increasing the number of follicles ≥35 mm, ovulation rates, and embryo recovery rates per flush compared with the control group. 相似文献

Soil microorganisms have numerous functional roles in forest ecosystems, including: serving as sources and sinks of key nutrients and catalysts of nutrient transformations; acting as engineers and maintainers of soil structure; and forming mutualistic relationships with roots that improve plant fitness. Although both prescribed and wildland fires are common in temperate forests of North America, few studies have addressed the long-term influence of such disturbances on the soil microflora in these ecosystems. Fire alters the soil microbial community structure in the short-term primarily through heat-induced microbial mortality. Over the long-term, fire may modify soil communities by altering plant community composition via plant-induced changes in the soil environment. In this review, we summarize and synthesize the various studies that have assessed the effects of fire on forest soil microorganisms, emphasizing the mechanisms by which fire impacts these vital ecosystem engineers. The examples used in this paper are derived primarily from studies of ponderosa pine-dominated forests of the Inland West of the USA; these forests have some of the shortest historical fire-return intervals of any forest type, and thus the evolutionary role of fire in shaping these forests is likely the strongest. We argue that the short-term effects of fire on soil microflora and the processes they catalyze are transient, and suggest that more research be devoted to linking long-term plant community responses with those of the mutually dependent soil microflora. 相似文献

Summary Seven of the wheat crosses which were performed in 1954 and 1955 produced a uniform semi-lethal F1. Among these were four combinations with the spring wheat Koga and two with the Turkish winter wheat Eskischir. The degree of withering in the F1 appeared to be dependent on the variety with which Koga or Eskischir were combined. In the F2 of the Koga crosses carried out in 1954 a 9 : 7 ratio of semi-lethals and normal plants was found. The almost continuous gradation in semi-lethality within the group of semi-lethal plants of every F2 was conspicuous.The facts are explained as follows: Two complementary genes determine the semi-lethality as such, while modifying genes are responsible for the different degrees of semi-lethality of the different F1's and for the variation in degree of semi-lethality within every F2. In the discussion this explanation is given in detail.It is pointed out that it is perhaps possible, with the aid of the phenomenon of semi-lethality, to discover or confirm relationships between species and/or varieties.Finally it is suggested that the rejection of F1's with withering symptoms is premature. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of an equine plasma product i.v. and a concentrated serum product i.v. to deliver antibodies to 46 foals with failure of passive transfer (FPT). Treatment of FPT was as per manufacturers recommendations, using plasma (950 ml/unit) or a concentrated serum product (250 ml/unit). Significant variables affecting the 3 day post-transfusion serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration of foals included body weight, pretransfusion IgG concentration, number of product units transfused, foaling season and product administered. Plasma treatment had a greater increase in post-transfusion serum IgG concentrations compared to the serum product treatment mainly because plasma contained approximately twice the amount of IgG per unit as the serum product. The change in equine influenza virus and tetanus toxoid-specific IgGa, IgGb, and IgG(T) titres was measured in foals from pretransfusion to 3 days post-transfusion. For each gram of IgG transfused, the change in antigen-specific IgG subisotypes were similar for both treatment groups. The results of this study suggest that similar foal serum IgG concentrations can be achieved 3 days post-transfusion by administering 1 unit of plasma or 2-3 units of serum product. 相似文献
