The influence of the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa on the biomass and the proportion of active and dormant soil microorganisms after the addition of cut perennial ryegrass
(Lolium perenne) to upper soil from agricultural field was studied in a microcosm experiment. During a 2-month period, soil samples were
taken 1, 8, 22, 36, 50, and 64 days after cut grass addition. A substrate-induced respiration (SIR) method was used to analyse
the samples for total microbial biomass and the distribution of active and dormant microbial biomass. It was found that the
addition of grass increased the microbial biomass (SIR) because of an increase in the active microbial biomass. After the
initially high values, the active microbial biomass decreased slowly, and at day 64, it was still higher in the grass-amended
soils than in the control treatment without grass addition. After 1 day, the active microbial biomass was higher in the soil
with A. caliginosa than without the earthworm. At the subsequent samplings, there were no differences in microbial biomass or the proportion
of dormant vs active microorganisms between the grass-amended soils. The average from all sampling occasions of SIR was higher

Atmospheric aerosol formation is known to occur almost all over the world, and the importance of these particles to climate and air quality has been recognized. Although almost all of the processes driving aerosol formation take place below a particle diameter of 3 nanometers, observations cover only larger particles. We introduce an instrumental setup to measure atmospheric concentrations of both neutral and charged nanometer-sized clusters. By applying the instruments in the field, we come to three important conclusions: (i) A pool of numerous neutral clusters in the sub-3 nanometer size range is continuously present; (ii) the processes initiating atmospheric aerosol formation start from particle sizes of approximately 1.5 nanometers; and (iii) neutral nucleation dominates over the ion-induced mechanism, at least in boreal forest conditions. 相似文献

Changes in climate or forest management practices leading to increased litter production will most likely cause increased leaching rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the O horizon. The rhizosphere is often assumed to have a large carbon flux associated with root turnover and exudation. However, little has been done to quantify the amount of DOC originating from root litter. We studied decomposition of fine root and needle litter of Norway spruce (Picea abies) through a combined incubation and leaching experiment in the laboratory using five different litter types: fresh needle litter, aged needles from the litter layer, fresh and dead roots from mineral soil samples, and seven-year-old roots from a previous litterbag study. After respiration measurements, the samples were percolated with artificial throughfall water and DOC and UV absorbance were measured in the leachate. Mineralisation of dissolved organic matter in the leachate and sorption of DOC to ferrihydrite were determined as a measure of DOC ability to be stabilised by iron (hydr)oxide surfaces.The mineralisation rate and DOC production rate of root samples were always lower than that of needle samples. However, root and needle derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) were similar in terms of aromaticity, as indicated by their specific UV absorbance, and ability to be sorbed by ferrihydrite. For seven-year-old roots, a significantly higher fraction of carbon was lost as DOC (30%) than for younger roots (20%). Furthermore, DOM from old roots bound more strongly to ferrihydrite and is mineralised at a lower rate than DOC from younger roots, suggesting that roots at late stages of decomposition, although a small fraction of total litter, significantly contribute to carbon build-up in mineral soils. The slower decomposition rate of roots compared with needles must be taken into account when modelling litter decomposition. 相似文献

The yield potential of 60 spring barley varieties was examined under controlled drought and natural conditions in the years 2011–2013. The studied varieties were genotyped with the 1536‐SNP barley oligonucleotide assay. In experiments with controlled drought conditions, the grain yield, 1,000‐grain weight, number of productive tillers and length of the main stem were measured. Physicochemical properties such as the specific surface area, water adsorption energy, fractal dimension and nanopore radius of the plant leaves were determined and correlated with yield‐forming traits. Field trials were conducted over 3 years at 14 locations, where along with the yield‐related traits, monthly rainfall and average temperature were monitored. Five varieties of high yield and five varieties relatively stable under both semi‐controlled and natural conditions were distinguished. The yield‐related traits observed in various locations were related to environmental variables relevant to water availability. The sum of the rainfall in April and May was negatively correlated with the 1,000‐grain weight and positively with the plant height. Positive relationships were found between plant height and temperatures in June and July. Five markers detected earlier as linked to the quantitative trait loci in the mapping populations were identified to have a coherent effect among varieties of various pedigree. 相似文献
