Measurements describing pelvic conformation of pedigree Belgian Blue cows were obtained from a sample of nine herds in Flanders, Belgium, comprising 111 adult breeding cows, and from 11 herds in the United Kingdom comprising 108 similar cows. All herds in the Belgian sample (111 cows) managed parturition by elective caesarian section as did seven herds (56 cows) in the UK sample; the remainder of UK herds (52 cows) allowed cows the opportunity to calve naturally per vagina before resorting to caesarian section. The data described the external and internal measurements, and pelvic area characteristic of this breed, irrespective of the different selection pressures applied over a number of years to this breed through variation in farm management and market forces present in either country. From these data, generalized linear models were constructed to predict pelvic area; they correctly identified cows with either small or large pelvic areas. There were no significant differences in pelvic conformation between cattle bred either in Belgium or the UK, although those cows bred in herds where natural calving was allowed to take place had significantly larger internal pelvic height (p < 0.05) and area (p < 0.05) than other Belgian Blue cows. The correlation coefficients between internal pelvic height and width and external pelvic measurements were significant (p < 0.001). These results might facilitate the selection of breeding cows with larger pelvic area so that a higher proportion of cows can calve naturally than currently occurs. However, selection for other traits such as relatively low birth weight combined with higher weaning weight should be carried out at the same time. 相似文献
Wildlife tourism is an important platform to investigate the relationship between people and nature. Given that wildlife destinations are likely to receive higher tourism demand from new emerging economies, this article considers the wider emotional and psychological implications of wildlife watching. The growing significance of this tourist activity is a potential reawakening of a deeper ecological sub-consciousness brought about by a society that is disconnected from nature. Particular attention is given to the importance of experiencing nature first hand, the psychological benefits, and the emotional responses that may engender a relationship of care. This is good for both the human spirit and for nature conservation. 相似文献
Soil properties can vary spatially due to differences in topography, parent material, and land management practices. For site-specific management within the field, information on spatial variation of soil properties is essential. This case study was conducted to quantify the spatial variability of available plant nutrients and organic matter under arable cropping in New Zealand. Within a 10.4-ha paddock that had a long-term history of arable cropping, 91 samples (0–7.5 cm) were collected in a grid pattern for determination of mineral nitrogen (Min N), anaerobically mineralizable N (AMN), Olsen P, total carbon (TC), and total N (TN). The data were evaluated using geostatistical and classical statistical methods. Although the paddock had a flat topography and had been managed uniformly for many years, nutrient concentrations exhibited substantial variability. All measured variables except mineral N showed moderate positional dependence. Autocorrelation distances were 400 m for Olsen P, 293 m for AMN, and 347 m for TC. Soil C showed a strong, positive correlation with the amount of clay plus fine silt (<5 µm fraction) and a negative correlation with sand content. These results suggest that textural variation was a major factor influencing within-field variability in soil organic matter. Using the spatial data, zones with different plant nutrient requirements were identified (four for N; two for P). An application strategy that accounts for fertility differences between zones may improve fertilizer use efficiency and contribute to better environmental outcomes; P inputs could be reduced by 50% by avoiding application to the high Olsen P zone. 相似文献
Three wheat flours, three wheat starches, a regular maize starch and a waxy maize starch were subjected to a number of different RVA profiles. Five different initial temperatures were used, 40, 50, 55, 60, and 65°C, with different initial holding times (0–3 min), heating times (2fl–10 min), holding times at 95°C (0–6 min), cooling times (2–6 min), and final hold times (0–10 min) being applied. A range of final temperatures of 30–60°C was also utilized. Significant variations in viscosity were observed with these conditions, particularly in wheat starch and flour. The most important parameters causing these variations were the initial temperature, the heating rate, and the final holding time. Short initial holding times also resulted in a wider spread of values for peak viscosity although there was little effect on the mean value and no significant effect on the holding strength or final viscosity. The final temperature was also important in that lower temperatures gave more viscous gels. Provided that the desired cooling rate could be achieved, varying the cooling time had no effect on the peak or trough viscosities and only a very minor effect on the final viscosity. If final temperatures of 40°C or lower are to be used, the cooling conditions and final hold time would need to be adjusted so that maximum viscosity could be achieved. A proposal for a standard Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) procedure is: at least 1 min at 50°C, heat to 95°C over 4 min, hold at 95°C for 4 min, cool to 50°C in 3 min, and hold at 50°C for 4 min. These conditions should minimize variation within samples and should allow a better comparison between samples. 相似文献
The precision of the disc diffusion protocols previously published by Alderman and Smith (Aquaculture 196 (2002) 211) was analysed in a seven-laboratory trial using Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 as the test strain. Discs containing seven antimicrobial agents were employed and 2899 zone size measurements were generated. The total data generated in the trial was used to quantify the intra- and inter-laboratory precisions. The study design also facilitated the investigation of the influence of the source of media and the source of discs on zone sizes. A smaller two-laboratory trial was employed to investigate the influence of incubation time of zone size.
The intra-laboratory precision was relatively high with the mean of the coefficients of variation calculated for each laboratory and each agent being 4.7%. In contrast, the inter-laboratory precision was very much lower with the mean of the values for each agent being 11.1%. Significant influences on zone size were detected for all three parameters of the protocol. Media source effects were particularly notable with respect to oxytetracycline and oxolinic acid discs, disc source effects with respect to ampicillin and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim discs and incubation times with the ampicillin and amoxycillin discs. ANOVA analysis of the total data set confirmed that inter-laboratory variation was the major factor influencing the low precision of the protocol.
The overall precision of the protocols used here was found to be significantly lower than that implied by the control limits associated with the same bacterium in other validated disc diffusion protocols. The implications of these results, for the further development of the protocols under investigation, are discussed. 相似文献
The identity of Colletotrichum acutatum as the causal pathogen of grape ripe-rot, which causes yield loss and a bitter taint that lowers wine quality in Australian subtropical wine-grape regions, was confirmed using species-specific primers. Cultural, morphological and molecular methods (RAPD-PCR and sequencing of parts of the 5·8S-ITS regions and the β-tubulin-2 gene) were used to determine the phylogenetic relationships of Australian C. acutatum isolates from wine grapes and other horticultural crops. A combination of RAPD-PCR and β-tubulin-2 gene data showed that all wine-grape ripe-rot isolates from northern regions of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland belong to a proposed new C. acutatum group (A9), together with isolates from Australian strawberry, mango, blueberry and olive. The 5·8S-ITS sequences for these grape pathogens were identical to published sequences for an isolate from Cyclamen (the Netherlands) and differed by 1 bp from isolates from Capsicum (Taiwan) and orange (Costa Rica). The grape ripe-rot isolates from the Shoalhaven Valley (southern NSW) were clustered within two other C. acutatum groups: A2 and A5. In vitro infection studies showed that Australian C. acutatum isolates from almond, blueberry, chilli, grape, mango, olive, strawberry and tomato were able to infect grape and could also infect blueberry and strawberry, indicating a lack of host specificity. This lack of host specificity, the genetic similarity with non-grape isolates, and the fact that many of the non-grape hosts were isolated from wine-growing regions, suggest the potential for cross-infection between grape and other horticultural crops. 相似文献
