The existence of a dominant massive planet, Jupiter, in our solar system, although perhaps essential for long-term dynamical stability and the development of life, may not be typical of planetary systems that form around other stars. In a system containing two Jupiter-like planets, the possibility exists that a dynamical instability will develop. Computer simulations suggest that in many cases this instability leads to the ejection of one planet while the other is left in a smaller, eccentric orbit. In extreme cases, the eccentric orbit has a small enough periastron distance that it may circularize at an orbital period as short as a few days through tidal dissipation. This may explain the recently detected Jupiter-mass planets in very tight circular orbits and wider eccentric orbits around nearby stars.  相似文献

A cooperative study involving six experiment stations and 236 crossbred litters was conducted to determine the effect of nominal nipple drinker water flows of 700 mL/min and 70 mL/min (actual = 701 and 76 mL/min, respectively) during winter (November through February; 124 litters) and summer (June through August; 112 litters) seasons on performance of lactating sows and their litters. Within a season, sows were paired according to expected farrowing date and assigned at random to crates. Water flow rate treatments were assigned at random to sows within pairs. Sows were housed in farrowing crates from d 109 of gestation until either d 21 (two stations) or d 28 of lactation (four stations). Within 24 h after farrowing, litters were adjusted to contain 8 to 12 piglets. Sow feed intake (SFI) and litter weight (LW) were recorded weekly. Sow weights were recorded at d 109 of gestation, d 0, and d 21 of lactation. Sows lactating beyond 21 d were also weighed on d 28. Analysis of covariance was applied to sow weight change, average daily SFI, and LW data where litter size after crossfostering was the covariate. Average ambient temperature 30 cm above the floor at 0830 and 1600 was 24.6 +/- 0.15 degrees C and 29.4 +/- 0.14 degrees C, respectively, during summer and 20.7 +/-0.13 degrees C and 21.8 +/- 0.11 degrees C during winter trials. Restricted drinker water flow rate decreased SFI (P < 0.01; 4.59 vs. 3.94 kg/d, respectively, for 700 and 70 mL/min) and increased BW loss (P < 0.01; 0.56 vs 0.89 kg/d, respectively for 700 and 70 mL/min) but did not affect litter size (P > 0.87) or LW (P > 0.89) during the first 21 d of lactation. During d 22 to 28, the 70 mL/min flow decreased SFI (P < 0.01; 5.02 vs. 4.47 kg/d respectively, for 700 and 70 mL/min). Over the 21-d lactation period, the 70 mL/min treatment depressed (P < 0.01) SFI more during the winter (5.12 vs. 4.24 kg/d for 700 and 70 mL/ min, respectively) than during the summer (4.05 vs 3.65 kg/d for 700 and 70 mL/min, respectively). Season affected SFI (P < 0.01; 4.68 vs. 3.85 kg/d, respectively, for winter and summer), sow weight loss (P < 0.001; 0.46 vs 0.83 kg/d, respectively, for winter and summer), and LW at 21 d (P < 0.05; 52.8 vs. 49.6 kg, respectively, for winter and summer) but not (P > 0.96) the number of pigs per litter. Results of this study suggest that ample access to drinking water and controlling ambient temperature during summer months are essential for sow and litter performance.  相似文献

One-hundred-ninety-two weanling pigs from two separate trials, (initial weight 6.0 and 5.6 kg) and 400 growing-finishing pigs (initial weight 17 kg) were fed normal and high lysine corn diets containing four levels of lysine in a 2 X 4 factorial arrangement. Crossbred (Large White X Landrace X Duroc) pigs were used in all experiments. The objectives of the experiments were to (1) compare normal and high lysine corn when fed at different lysine levels, (2) determine the lysine requirements for the three stages of growth and (3) evaluate the effect of protein level on the lysine requirement. All diets were balanced on a lysine basis. The results indicated that both weanling and growing-finishing pig performance and final carcass composition were similar for pigs fed normal or high lysine corn diets balanced on a lysine basis. Weanling pigs from 5 to 14 kg required at least 1.10% lysine. Based on changes in body weight gain and feed efficiency, the lysine requirement of growing pigs (17 to 54 kg) was .70%, and that of finishing pigs (54 to 101 kg) was .50%. However, based on lean tissue growth rate (as reflected by longissimus muscle area and percentage of lean in the carcass) the requirement was at least .75% during the growing stage and .60% during the finishing stage. The reduced protein level (2% lower) of the high lysine corn diets did not reduce the lysine required by pigs compared with those fed normal corn.  相似文献

Systemic factors that ultimately affect skeletal growth involve interrelationships among Ca, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and conversion of 25-OH vitamin D(3) to the active hormone, 1α,25-(OH)(2)D(3). These interrelationships, with a focus on mechanisms that affect Ca homeostasis, are referred to as the Ca, PTH, and vitamin D axis. Relatively little research has focused on these interrelationships and P homeostasis. In the past decade, discovery of a previously unrecognized hormone involved in a pathway for P homeostasis offers opportunities to improve P efficiency without compromising skeletal growth and animal well-being. The objective of this review was to summarize pivotal research discoveries that led to the current understanding of the roles of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) in P homeostasis that are independent from the well-described pathways involved with Ca homeostasis. The novel pathways are referred to as the FGF23, P, and vitamin D axis. The peptide, FGF23, directly affects P homeostasis via action on renal target tissues to regulate Na-P transport proteins and renal 25(OH)D(3)-1α hydroxylase activity. Identification of bone as the primary site for FGF23 production ascribes an endocrine gland function to bone. Within 9 h after a single injection of recombinant FGF23, mice displayed hypophosphatemia and urinary P wasting. In contrast, FGF23 knockout mice displayed hyperphosphatemia and renal P conservation. These responses were independent of PTH. Applications of the FGF23, P, and vitamin D axis in dietary strategies for animal agriculture need to be explored. Development of dietary inputs to balance both Ca and P homeostasis are needed to improve skeletal growth and nutrient efficiency.  相似文献

A regional experiment was conducted at 8 experiment stations, with a total of 320 sows initially, to evaluate the efficacy of adding 13.35% ground wheat straw to a corn-soybean meal gestation diet for 3 successive gestation-lactation (reproductive) cycles compared with sows fed a control diet without straw. A total of 708 litters were farrowed over 3 reproductive cycles. The basal gestation diet intake averaged 1.95 kg daily for both treatments, plus 0.30 kg of straw daily for sows fed the diet containing ground wheat straw (total intake of 2.25 kg/d). During lactation, all sows on both gestation treatments were fed ad libitum the standard lactation diet used at each station. Response criteria were sow farrowing and rebreeding percentages, culling factors and culling rate, weaning-to-estrus interval, sow BW and backfat measurements at several time points, and litter size and total litter weight at birth and weaning. Three hundred eighty-four growing-finishing pigs were used in two experiments to determine the effect of dietary fluorine (F) on growth, blood and bone physical characteristics. Fourteen dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing F (as NaF) to a milo-soybean meal basal diet (7 ppm F) to provide levels of 7, 132, 257, 382, 507 and 632 ppm F for Exp. 1, and 7, 25, 43, 61, 79, 97, 115 and 133 ppm F for Exp. 2. Average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were not affected (P greater than .09) when F was fed at levels between 7 and approximately 132 ppm. Average daily gain and ADFI were reduced (P less than .0001) for pigs consuming diets with F concentrations greater than 132 ppm (Exp. 1). Feed conversion was not affected (P greater than .17) by any level of F fed. Serum F and alkaline phosphatase concentrations increased (P less than .01) with increasing dietary F levels. Serum and bone Ca and P concentrations were not affected (P greater than .13) by dietary F levels (Exp. 1). In Exp. 1 and 2, bone F increased (P less than .0001) and metatarsal stress and modulus of elasticity decreased (P less than .0001) as level of F increased in the diet. Bone thickness decreased quadratically (P less than .02) in Exp. 1 and linearly (P less than .0007) in Exp. 2 with increased dietary F levels. Scanning electron microscopy showed an increase in porosity of bones from pigs fed the higher levels of F. Growing-finishing pigs were able to tolerate approximately 132 ppm F for growth, but all of the F levels (greater than or equal to 7 ppm) fed in these two experiments affected bone integrity.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted utilizing neonatal piglets. In the first experiment, 18 piglets were used to determine the effect of an oral supplement of 0, 12 or 24 ml of a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) product on subsequent milk consumption. Results from the weight-suckle-weight experiment showed that force-feeding 24 ml of the MCT decreased (P less than .05) milk intake but 12 ml did not. In the second experiment, two trials (each with 24 piglets) were used to investigate the effect of 12 ml of MCT or 12 ml of MCT plus .6 mmol of L-carnitine on the concentration of blood glucose, ammonium N and urea N at 0, 12 or 24 h and liver and biceps femoris glycogen at 24 h post-treatment. Blood urea N decreased (P less than .05) in piglets receiving the MCT. Blood ammonium N and glucose concentrations were not different (P greater than .10) among treatments. In Trial 1, the predicted loss of liver glycogen was less (P less than .05) in pigs given the MCT treatment, but this response was not repeated in the second trial. In general, supplemental carnitine provided no added benefit over the MCT treatment alone. The results from this study indicate that MCT is utilized as a fuel by the newborn piglet and that its use may spare critical fuels, glycogen and protein, that were stored in the piglet prior to birth.  相似文献
