Objective: To describe the diagnosis and treatment of fractures of the deltoid tuberosity. Study Design: Case series. Methods: Medical records (1992–2009) of 19 horses with radiographic confirmation of deltoid tuberosity fractures were reviewed. Data retrieved included signalment, clinical and diagnostic imaging findings, and treatment. Outcome was determined by telephone questionnaire of owners and referring veterinarians. Results: Most horses were markedly lame on admission and 53% had reduced protraction of the affected limb. All fractures were identified on a cranio45° medial‐caudolateral oblique projection; however, only 32% (6 horses) were detected on a mediolateral projection whereas 86% were evident ultrasonographically. Treatment by local wound care and stall rest resulted in return to athletic function without lameness for 13 of 14 horses that had follow‐up. Conclusions: A cranio45° medial‐caudolateral oblique radiographic view was better than a mediolateral projection for identification of deltoid tuberosity fractures. Ultrasonographic detection of fractures was similar except when gas accumulation obscured the fracture site. Deltoid tuberosity fractures can cause severe lameness but can be treated successfully with conservative management. 相似文献

Successful vaccination of sheep against footrot and attempts to eradicate the disease depend on there being a limit to the antigenic diversity of the causative bacterium, Bacteroides nodosus. Fimbrial antigenic variation was therefore investigated in vivo, both under conditions of chronic infection and under the pressure of a vaccine-induced immune response, to ascertain whether this represented an obstacle to such goals. Material was available from 5 experiments and although B. nodosus appeared to have undergone changes in its fimbrial antigens in one of these, the possibility that superinfection was responsible for the variation detected could not be ruled out because all sheep in this case were maintained at pasture. Overall, the results provided no evidence of fimbrial antigenic shift in B. nodosus in vivo and in conclusion, the survival of the organism in the sheep's foot, both in long-term natural infection and following vaccination, must therefore be related to factors other than the ability to undergo antigenic variation in order to evade the host's immune response. 相似文献

Seventy-nine cattle in all stages of gestation were inoculated with a low dose (2.5 x 10(8) colony-forming units) of Brucella abortus strain 19, then challenge exposed with pathogenic B abortus strain 2308 during the subsequent gestation. A brucellosis case was defined by isolation of strain 2308 from dam or calf samples. Cumulative incidence of brucellosis cases was 48, 33, 25, or 47% for cattle that were, respectively, not pregnant, or 19 to 87, 100 to 167, or 190 to 253 days in gestation at vaccination. The cumulative incidence was 56% in 27 nonvaccinated controls. The 95% confidence intervals for risk ratios included 1 in all cattle, except those that were 100 to 167 days in gestation at vaccination (ie, second trimester); the confidence interval for this group was 0.21 to 0.97. The prevented fraction (1-risk ratio) attributed to strain 19, in ascending order, was 0.14, 0.16, 0.4, or 0.55, respectively, for cattle that were not pregnant, or were 190 to 253, 19 to 87, or 100 to 167 days in gestation at vaccination. Potential confounders of breed, pen effect, and gestation days at challenge exposure did not significantly affect results. Results supported the hypothesis that stage of gestation at vaccination will affect the prevented fraction of brucellosis, or efficacy of strain 19, in cattle vaccinated with a low dose and, therefore, is one factor that may explain variation in strain 19-induced protection. 相似文献

An 8-year-old, spayed female Dalmatian with a history of seizures was evaluated for cervical pain and bilateral scleral hemorrhages. Diagnostic evaluations revealed a mass displacing the ventral brainstem on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The mass was surgically removed and histologically confirmed to be a hematoma. The dog's neurological signs resolved completely after surgery. Although extradural, subdural, subarachnoid, and intraparenchymal hemorrhages have been reported in dogs and cats, this is the first known report of a subdural hematoma of the ventral brainstem in a dog. On the basis of the history and the appearance of the subdural hematoma on MRI, a traumatic event during the seizure episodes was considered the most likely cause of the subdural hematoma in this case. 相似文献

Thousands of blood transfusions are performed each year on dogs and cats, and the demand for blood products continues to grow. Risks associated with transfusions include the risk of disease transmission. Appropriate screening of blood donors for bloodborne infectious disease agents should be performed to lessen this risk. Geographic restrictions of disease, breed predilection, and documentation of actual disease transmission by transfusion all are factors that might need to be considered when making a decision on what screening program to use. Ovariectomy was performed in a 7-month-old Great Pyrenees with a severe congenital bleeding disorder. A diagnosis of Glanzmann thrombasthenia, a rare, congenital bleeding disorder characterized by a functional platelet defect, was later confirmed by isolation of genomic DNA from blood and amplification of exon 13 and intron 13 of the gene encoding for platelet glycoprotein subunit alphaIIb. Perioperative management consisted of administration of platelet-rich plasma prior to surgery and the use of high-frequency electrocoagulation to minimize tissue trauma. In addition, ovariectomy, rather than ovariohysterectomy, was performed to minimize surgical exposure required and manipulation of the urogenital tract. Results in this dog suggest that a combination of preoperative transfusion with functional platelets and use of techniques to minimize tissue trauma may allow abdominal surgery to be performed successfully in dogs with functional platelet disorders. 相似文献

A young cat with signs of chronic rhinitis was evaluated for underlying anatomical, inflammatory, or infectious disease. Initial diagnostics were significant for the isolation of an unusual pathogen, Haemophilus species. Isolation using a human RapID NH system erroneously identified the isolate as H. segnis, a human pathogen. No database of veterinary pathogens (Haemophilus) are included in the system and animal pathogens will either be erroneously identified or yield a unique biocode not listed. Because of the unique nature of the pathogen we explored the possibility of immunosuppression as a contributory factor to infection. A variety of laboratory tests were employed to evaluate immune function. The clinical indications and utility of immune function testing are discussed. No immune dysfunction was identified. 相似文献
