The solar thermal energy stored in hydroelectric reservoir thermoclines is very large and greatly exceeds the gravitational hydroenergy of the surface water, even after limitations arising from the second law of thermodynamics have been taken into account. Greatly enhanced power production can be obtained at present hydroelectric facilities if heat engines are adapted to exploit this large thermal energy resource.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short-term postoperative forelimb function after scalpel and laser onychectomy in cats. DESIGN: Randomized, prospective study. ANIMALS: 20 healthy adult cats. PROCEDURES: Cats were randomly assigned to the laser (n = 10) or scalpel (10) onychectomy group. Unilateral left forelimb onychectomy was performed. In the scalpel group, a tourniquet was used during surgery and a bandage was applied after surgery. Pressure platform gait analysis was performed prior to and 1, 2, 3, and 12 days after onychectomy. Peak vertical force (PVF), vertical impulse, and the ratio of the PVF of the left forelimb to the sum of the remaining limbs (PVF ratio) were used as outcome measures. RESULTS: The laser onychectomy group had significantly higher ground reaction forces on days 1 and 2 and significantly higher PVF ratio on day 12, compared with the scalpel group. Similarly, significant differences were found in change in ground reaction forces on days 1 and 2 and the PVF ratio on day 12, compared with day -1. No cats required rescue analgesia during the course of the study. One cat in the laser group had signs of depression and was reluctant to walk on day 2 after surgery, had physical examination findings consistent with cardiac insufficiency, and was euthanized. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Cats had improved limb function immediately after unilateral laser onychectomy, compared with onychectomy with a scalpel, tourniquet, and bandage. This improved limb function may result from decreased pain during the 48 hours following unilateral laser onychectomy.  相似文献

Objective To test the hypothesis that the distribution, density, and subtype of opioid and alpha (α)‐2 adrenergic receptors within the central nervous system (CNS) are significantly different between horse and dog. Study design Prospective experimental study. Animals Three dogs (3 years of age) and three horses (2–5 years of age). Animals were opioid‐ and α‐2 agonist‐free at the time of euthanasia. Methods Brain tissue was obtained at 126 days post‐surgery from dogs and 72 days post‐surgery from horses. The brains were removed, sectioned coronally into 1‐cm slabs, frozen in methylbutane, which was cooled by liquid nitrogen, and stored at ?70 °C. Receptor autoradiography was performed using established techniques. [3H]DAMGO, [3H]U‐69593, and [3H]RX821002 were used for mu (µ)‐opioid, kappa (κ)‐opioid, and α‐2 adrenergic‐binding assays, respectively. Species differences were analyzed separately for each major brain region by repeated measures anova for subregions followed by Fisher's protected Latin square design (LSD). p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results There was higher binding of µ‐opioid receptors in the frontal cortex, left somatosensory cortex, colliculus (mid‐brain), and granule cell layer of the cerebellum of horses than that of dogs. There was higher binding to κ‐opioid receptors in the frontal cortex of dogs compared to horses, whereas binding to κ‐opioid receptors in the cerebellum was higher in horses. Binding to α‐2 adrenergic receptors in the mid‐brain was significantly higher in dogs than in horses. There was higher binding of α‐2 adrenergic receptors in the dorsomedial and dorsolateral periaqueductal grey of dogs as compared to that of horses. Conclusion The results of this study show that the distribution of these receptors is different between horses and dogs. Further work is needed to understand the relevance of these differences to clinical responses to opioids and α‐2 adrenergic agonists in these species.  相似文献

The accumulation of germanium (Ge) by barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. ‘Arivat') grown at various Ge and pH levels was investigated because Ge is an industrially important metal and bioaccumulation of Ge is a potentially useful means of concentrating this trace metal. Six‐day‐old barley seedlings were grown in perlite and nutrient solution adjusted to a pH of 4.5, 6.0, or 7.5 supplemented with 20, 40,60, or 80 μM Ge for seven days. The plants were divided into roots and shoots after harvesting; the dry weight and Ge content of the individual organs were measured, as was the peroxidase activity in the distal 1 cm of the primary leaves. Barley seedlings accumulated Ge in the roots and shoots; the shoots accumulated Ge linearly as medium Ge concentration increased. The dry weight of the organs was not affected, although necrosis was observed in the primary leaves of the seedlings treated with Ge concentrations greater than 20μM. Peroxidase activity in the primary leaves also increased as the Ge levels in the medium increased which indicated that elevated levels of Ge stimulated leaf senescence. These results demonstrate that barley plants can take up Ge and suggest that Ge is not toxic at the levels that might occur in areas where Ge is normally mined.  相似文献

Six types of starch nanocrystals were prepared from corn, barley, potato, tapioca, chickpea, and mungbean starches with an acid hydrolysis method. The yields and morphological, structural, and thermal properties of starch nanocrystals were characterized. Starch nanocrystals had yields ranging from 8.8 to 35.7%, depending on botanical origin. During acid hydrolysis, amylose was effectively degraded, and no amylose was detected in any starch nanocrystal. Shape and size of native starch granules varied between starches, whereas there was no obvious difference in shape among different types of starch nanocrystals. The average particle size of starch nanocrystals was mainly related to crystalline type of native starches. Compared with their native starch counterparts, changes in crystalline diffraction patterns of starch nanocrystals depended on the original botanical source and crystalline structure. Degree of crystallinity, melting temperature, and enthalpy of starch nanocrystals increased, whereas their thermal decomposition temperature decreased. Of six produced starch nanocrystals, potato starch nanocrystal had the lowest yield, degree of crystallinity, and onset and melting temperatures, the largest particle size, and obvious changes in crystalline diffraction pattern.  相似文献

Formation of wine thiol precursors is a dynamic process, which can be influenced by vineyard and winery processing operations. With the aim of increasing thiol precursor concentrations, a study of the effects of storing machine-harvested Sauvignon blanc grapes prior to crushing and pressing was undertaken on a commercial scale. 3-Mercaptohexan-1-ol (3-MH) precursors, 2-S-glutathionylcaftaric acid (grape reaction product, GRP), glutathione (GSH) and a number of C6 compounds were assessed at several time points during the experiment. The concentration of the cysteine precursor to 3-MH doubled within 8 h and tripled after 30 h while the GSH and cysteinylglycine precursors increased in concentration roughly 1.5 times. (E)-2-Hexenal and GSH levels decreased as thiol precursors, GRP and C6 alcohols increased during storage. Principal component analysis revealed that precursors contributed to most of the variation within the samples over the storage period, with additional influence, primarily from GSH and GRP, as well as (E)-2-hexenal and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. Early storage time points were associated with higher concentrations of GSH and some unsaturated C6 compounds while longer storage times were most closely associated with higher thiol precursor and GRP concentrations. This study provides a detailed overview of interactions related to thiol precursor formation on a commercial scale and highlights the ability to manipulate precursor concentrations prior to grape crushing.  相似文献

New Zealand is well known for export of meat and dairy products from low cost pastoral systems. These farm systems are continually evolving for increased efficiency, in part through the use of metabolic energy modeling tools by farmers and farm consultants to explore alternative farm system configurations and identify new efficiencies. One recent innovation is the introduction of a herb pasture area, such as plantain. We used metabolic energy modeling to quantify seasonal feed flows in two successive years in a New Zealand hill country farm system, and to analyze the impact of the introduction of an area of plantain. Models employed were a self-built Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and a commercial New Zealand farm systems modeling package, FARMAX. Herbage production, animal performance and financial results for a base farm scenario created from the average of survey data for hill farms in the southern North Island, and the same farm with 10% and 20% of the area in plantain for the years 2010–2011 and 2011–2012 were modeled. The self-built model performed similarly to the commercial model. The system configuration of the base farm stockpiles surplus autumn feed for release to animals in winter and also incorporates flexibility that confers resilience to interannual weather variation through varying dates animals are purchased or sold. The introduction of an area of plantain was predicted to increase herbage production, animal performance and financial returns. The predicted benefit was higher for the year 2010–2011 where a drought occurred in summer than for the following year with higher summer rainfall. This demonstrates the profitability of introducing a plantain area to New Zealand hill farm systems, and suggests plantain will assist to mitigate adverse effects of warmer and drier summer conditions associated with current climate change trends.  相似文献

Two research studies were conducted to evaluate weed control in potato with dimethenamid and dimethenamid-p. No significant injury was observed from most applications of dimethenamid prior to potato emergence, but injury was 20% to 38% with dimethenamid when emerging potatoes were covered slightly by soil during “drag-off” and rain occurred within 24 h. Common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) and common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) control with dimethenamid preemergence (PRE) did not exceed 68%. Dimethenamid-p plus metribuzin or dimethenamid-p followed by (fb) rimsulfuron postemergence (POST) controlled common lambsquarters 95% to 96% and common ragweed 71% to 92%. Annual grass control was greater with S-metolachlor alone than with dimethenamid isomers alone. Broadleaf and grass control was similar with dimethenamid and dimethenamid-p.  相似文献
