Formulations containing carbendazim (40 or 80 mM) in hydrochloric acid (180 or 320 mM) were pressure-injected into elms previously inoculated with the fungus Ceratocystis ulmi (the cause of Dutch elm disease) and their performance as eradicants assessed. All formulations caused some damage to foliage but leaves regenerated. Treatment with carbendazim (80 mM) in hydrochloric acid (180 mM) resulted in four out of five trees remaining free from disease, not only immediately after treatment, but also throughout the following season. Injection of acid alone resulted in rapid death of the trees.  相似文献

The objective was to compare the acute-phase response of steers receiving different doses of bovine corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Fourteen weaned Angus steers (BW = 191 ± 2.1 kg, age = 167 ± 4.7 d) fitted with an indwelling jugular catheter and a rectal temperature (RT) monitoring device were assigned to receive 1 of 3 treatments (intravenous infusion): 1) 0.1 μg of CRH/kg of BW (CRH1; n = 5), 2) 0.5 μg of CRH/kg of BW (CRH5; n = 5), and 3) 10 mL of saline (0.9%; n = 4). Blood samples were collected via catheters, relative to treatment infusion (0 h), hourly from -2 to 0 h and 4 to 8 h and every 30 min from 0 to 4 h. Rectal temperatures were recorded every 30 min from -2 to 8 h. Blood samples were also collected via jugular venipuncture and rectal temperatures assessed using a digital thermometer every 6 h from 12 to 72 h and every 24 h from 96 to 168 h. All plasma samples collected during the study were analyzed for concentrations of haptoglobin. All plasma samples collected from -2 to 8 h were analyzed for cortisol concentrations. Serum samples collected hourly from -2 to 8 h were analyzed for concentrations of NEFA, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon-γ. Cortisol peaked at 0.5 h for CRH1 steers but returned to baseline concentrations at 1 h relative to infusion (time effect; P < 0.01). In CRH5 steers, cortisol peaked at 0.5 h and returned to baseline concentrations 3.5 h relative to infusion (time effect; P < 0.01). Cortisol concentrations did not change after treatment infusion for saline steers (time effect; P = 0.42). In CRH1 steers, NEFA concentrations peaked 5 h after treatment infusion (time effect; P = 0.01). Conversely, serum NEFA concentrations did not change for CRH5 and saline steers after treatment infusion (time effect; P > 0.37). Mean serum TNF-α concentrations in CRH1 steers after treatment infusion were greater compared with saline (P = 0.02), tended to be greater (P = 0.08) compared with CRH5, and were similar (P = 0.40) between CRH5 and saline steers. Mean RT in CRH1 steers after treatment infusion were greater (P < 0.04) compared with saline and CRH5 and similar (P = 0.50) between CRH5 and saline steers. Haptoglobin increased and peaked 72 h after treatment infusion for CRH1 steers (time effect; P = 0.01) but did not change for CRH5 and saline steers (time effect; P > 0.45). In conclusion, the bovine acute-phase response stimulated by CRH infusion is dependent on the CRH dose and the subsequent response in circulating cortisol.  相似文献

Knowledge of mammalian diversity is still surprisingly disparate, both regionally and taxonomically. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status and distribution of the world's mammals. Data, compiled by 1700+ experts, cover all 5487 species, including marine mammals. Global macroecological patterns are very different for land and marine species but suggest common mechanisms driving diversity and endemism across systems. Compared with land species, threat levels are higher among marine mammals, driven by different processes (accidental mortality and pollution, rather than habitat loss), and are spatially distinct (peaking in northern oceans, rather than in Southeast Asia). Marine mammals are also disproportionately poorly known. These data are made freely available to support further scientific developments and conservation action.  相似文献

Behavioural and energetic responses of domesticated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) (mean fork length=440±45 mm) to a brief transportation episode were investigated. Fish implanted with radio transmitters measuring muscle activity (electromyogram; EMGi) were transported in a standard commercial shipping tank for 50 min by truck, and then allowed to recuperate for 48 h in stationary culture tanks. The EMGi telemetry data indicated that vigorous swimming activity occurred during transportation. Telemetry recordings also indicated that the fish's swimming activity returned to baseline levels within the 48 h period after transport. However, even beyond the 48 h resting period, the swimming performance (measured as critical speed and endurance) of transported fish was still impaired relative to non‐transported controls (P<0.05). Respirometry measurements of fish taken after transportation indicated that oxygen consumption (Vo2) was significantly elevated. The rise in Vo2 of post‐transport fish could be attributed to handling procedures, as well as the intense swimming behaviour observed during transportation. Therefore, the behavioural responses of fish during transportation produced physiological consequences that persisted long after the transportation event. This study demonstrates the potential for utilizing behavioural measures, in concert with biotelemetry technologies, as tools to assess the impacts of routine aquacultural procedures on the health and welfare of captive fish.  相似文献

Fish welfare issues are increasingly appearing on social and political agendas and have recently gained prominence in fisheries literature. By focusing on examples from recreational fishing, this paper challenges some of the previous accounts of fish welfare. Issues of concern encompass: (1) the feelings‐based approach to fish welfare; (2) the artificial divide between human beings and nature; and (3) ways in which stakeholders can address fish welfare issues. The different approaches to characterizing the interaction of humans with animals are animal welfare, animal liberation and animal rights. We show that the suffering‐centred approaches to fish welfare and the extension of the moral domain to fish – characteristic of the concepts of animal liberation and animal rights – are not the cornerstone of animal welfare. This, however, does not question the need of fisheries stakeholders to consider the well‐being of fish when interacting with them. There are many ways in which recreational fishing stakeholders can modify standard practices to improve the welfare of fish, without questioning fishing as an activity per se. Examples are choice of gear and handling techniques. Previous accounts have failed to include discussions of the many efforts – voluntary or mandated – pursued by fisheries stakeholders to reduce fish stress, injury and mortality. Progress towards addressing fish welfare issues will be enhanced by avoiding the viewing of humans as ‘non‐natural’ disturbance to fishes and keeping three types of crucial question in separate compartments. The three questions cover the symptoms of good and poor welfare, the conscious experience of suffering, and the ethical attitudes towards animals. Fish biologists should focus on the first question – objective measurement of biochemical, physiological and behavioural indicators – to evaluate whether human interactions with fish impair the latters’ health or prevent them from receiving what they need, if held in captivity.  相似文献

Aneuploidies are common chromosomal defects that result in growth and developmental deficits and high levels of lethality in humans. To gain insight into the biology of aneuploidies, we manipulated mouse embryonic stem cells and generated a trans-species aneuploid mouse line that stably transmits a freely segregating, almost complete human chromosome 21 (Hsa21). This "transchromosomic" mouse line, Tc1, is a model of trisomy 21, which manifests as Down syndrome (DS) in humans, and has phenotypic alterations in behavior, synaptic plasticity, cerebellar neuronal number, heart development, and mandible size that relate to human DS. Transchromosomic mouse lines such as Tc1 may represent useful genetic tools for dissecting other human aneuploidies.  相似文献

An all-metallic submicrometer device is demonstrated experimentally at room temperature that performs logical NOT operations on magnetic logic signals. When this two-terminal ferromagnetic structure is incorporated into a magnetic feedback loop, the junction performs a frequency division operation on an applied oscillating magnetic field. Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, anz relict sands. Two switchable, mesoscopically periodic materials were created by combining crystalline colloidal array (CCA) self-assembly with the temperature-induced volume phase transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). Body-centered-cubic CCAs of hydrated, swollen PNIPAM particles Bragg-diffract infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light weakly, whereas arrays of compact shrunken particles diffract efficiently. A tunable diffracting array was also created by embedding a CCA of polystyrene spheres within a PNIPAM hydrogel that swells and contracts with temperature; thus the array lattice constant varies with temperature, and the diffracted wavelength was thermally tunable across the entire visible spectrum. These materials may find applications in many areas of optics and materials science.  相似文献

Purified corn fiber gum (CFG‐F) isolated from fine (kernel endosperm‐derived) corn fiber that contained ≈2% residual protein was extracted with 70% aqueous ethanol. The aqueous ethanol extract (AEE), which contained 19.5% of the total CFG, contained a high percentage of the proteinaceous material present in the original gum sample. The AEE gum contained 6.81% protein by weight. The residue (R), which constituted 66% of the total CFG‐F, contained only 0.55% of protein. The emulsifying properties of R and AEE in a model oil‐in‐water emulsification system were studied by measuring turbidity after 1, 2, and 3 weeks, particle size after 4 weeks, and by confocal laser scanning microscopy after three months of storage at room temperature. These gums were compared with the standard well‐known emulsifiers native acacia gum (NAG) and modified acacia gum (MAG). The results indicate that although AEE contains protein‐rich components, it is not as good an emulsifier as the residue which contains only 0.55% of protein. However, emulsions prepared with the whole (unfractionated) CFG‐F under similar conditions were more stable showing higher turbidity and smaller particles size than those prepared with either R or AEE.  相似文献
