Several red rice biotypes have evolved resistance to imidazolinone herbicides. The origin of resistance has been attributed to gene flow from the herbicide-resistant rice cultivars, but independent evolution of spontaneous mutation can also contribute to the herbicide resistance. The objective of this study was to quantify the occurrence of gene flow and independent selection as the mechanisms of origin of imidazolinone-resistance in red rice to correctly define the management practices for red rice control. Three single nucleotide polymorphism markers were used to identify acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene mutations, and four simple sequence repeat markers were used to identify hybrids of imidazolinone-resistant rice cultivars and red rice. In addition, genetic diversity and population structure analyses were performed. Artificial hybrids were used as controls. Gene flow was the main origin of imidazolinone herbicide resistance, but independent selection occurred in 1.1 % of the evaluated red rice plants. Two red rice plants that independently evolved herbicide resistance had the ALS gene mutation, Gly654Glu. Population structure analysis also indicated intense gene flow from rice cultivars to red rice, but some populations maintained a high genetic identity based on a small amount of gene introgression from the rice cultivars. These results indicate the importance of adopting controls of red rice escapees to avoid gene flow from the imidazolinone-resistant rice, and the necessity of biotechnological approaches to mitigating gene flow in the development of new herbicide-resistant rice cultivars. 相似文献

Seed samples of seventeen field pea cultivars grown at five locations, and nine grass pea lines grown at two locations, in
western Canada during 1993 and 1994 were analysed for total phenolics and condensed tannins. Each location in each year was
considered as one environment. Total phenolics in field pea differed significantly among cultivars, ranging from 162 mg/kg
DM (dry matter) (CE, catechin equivalents) for AC Tamor to 325 mg/kg DM (CE) for Richmond. Field pea had barely detectable
levels of condensed tannins. Total phenolics in grass pea ranged from 868 mg/kg DM (CE) for L880388 to 2059 mg/kg DM (CE)
for LS89110. Condensed tannins in grass pea ranged from 0.89 g/kg DM (CE) for L880388 to 5.18 g/kg DM (CE) for LS89125. Cultivar
had a larger relative contribution to total phenolic levels in field pea and to total phenolic and condensed tannin levels
in grass pea than environment. Total phenolic and condensed tannin levels were not correlated with seed yield and seed protein
content in field pea or grass pea. Levels of total phenolics and condensed tannins were positively correlated in grass pea.
Grass pea seeds with darker seed coat colour contained higher levels of condensed tannins.

Seminal plasma (SP) is a mixture of contents from the testes, epididymides and accessory sex glands. The sperm concentration is highest in the first few jets, or fractions, of the ejaculate, and the composition of SP varies between these fractions because accessory gland secretions are released in a specific order. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of Na, Cl, K, Mg, Ca, inorganic phosphate (Pi) and the enzymes alkaline phosphatase (AP), acid phosphatase (ACP) and β‐glucuronidase (BG) in the different fractions of the ejaculate and in different stallions. All semen collections were done using a computer‐controlled phantom that collects the ejaculatory jets separately in five cups. The cups with the highest (HIGH) and the lowest (LOW) sperm concentration were analysed. In Trial I, semen was collected from three reproductively normal stallions. In Trial II, ejaculates of two reproductively normal stallions were compared to those of two subfertile stallions. In Trial III, semen was collected from seven stallions with varying reproductive history. The sperm‐rich fractions contained the highest levels of AP, ACP, BG and inorganic phosphate, and the values were positively correlated to the sperm concentration. Significant differences between the subfertile and the fertile stallions pairs in HIGH : LOW ratios were found in Pi and Cl concentrations. The highest concentrations of Ca and Mg were found in the last fractions with low sperm concentrations, with no significant differences between the fertile and the subfertile stallion pairs. The concentrations of K, Na and Cl were similar in HIGH and LOW fractions and in whole ejaculate samples. Pre‐sperm fluid contained the highest concentrations of Na and Cl. Some of the possible variation in storage tolerance between ejaculates and ejaculatory fractions could perhaps be explained by differences in the composition of SP. 相似文献

A study was conducted to analyze the effects of snails (Physa gyrina) on biofilm, bacterial abundance, off-flavor-producing bacteria, and off-flavor compounds in reuse aquaculture systems culturing rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Eight experimental-scale systems were used, including four with and without snails. Mean heterotrophic bacteria counts in water were lower (P < 0.05) in systems with snails. Submerged surfaces of sumps containing snails were nearly biofilm-free, while sumps without snails were coated with biofilm. Geosmin levels in trout fillets from snail-stocked systems were generally lower but not statistically different from the controls. Rainbow trout health and performance was not affected by snail presence. 相似文献

The role of restricted feeding on the growth and feed efficiency (FE) of juvenile walleye, Sander vitreus, was investigated through two experiments. In the summer/fall experiment, 7.44‐g walleye were fed on one of the three schedules for 84 days: control (daily satiation feeding at 6% BW day?1), D2 (2 days of feed deprivation, then fed at 12% BW day?1 for 7 days, repeated throughout the study) and SS80 (subsatiation feeding involving 2 weeks of maintenance ration, then fed at 80% of the control group's feeding level). Juvenile walleye growth rates were significantly higher in the SS80 than in the control group, however, their growth rates in the D2 group were no different than in the control. Mean FE of the SS80 group (0.49), significantly exceeded those of the control (0.36) and D2 (0.28) groups. In contrast with the summer/fall experiment, no differences in growth rate were detected among the control, SS80 and D2 groups in the subsequent 84‐d spring experiment, where the juvenile walleye (97.45 g) were substantially larger, and their mean FE values were generally lower, with less distinction observed among the groups. Our findings indicate potential to increase growth and FE of juvenile walleye in advance of fall, by applying restrict‐feed schedules. 相似文献

Amongst passive collecting gear types, light traps have been used extensively to sample the larvae and juveniles of fish in both marine and freshwater environments, and especially so in structurally complex habitats. Although a number of modifications have been proposed to increase efficiency, no account has hitherto been made of the possible loss of trapped larvae and juveniles as a result of within-trap predation by piscivorous fish. To address this issue, we evaluated the efficiency of modified light traps by the addition of mesh (3 mm knot-to-knot wrapped around the entrance chambers), by combining results from a long-term monitoring study with those from a designed field experiment. Abundance of larvae and juveniles collected during the monitoring program was higher in the years following mesh application (hence, beyond monthly variation), and this was supported by the experiment. Based on the latter, light/mesh traps consistently caught only larvae/juveniles, hence excluding adults; whereas the opposite was true of the light/no-mesh trap combination. Also, mesh/no-light traps did not capture any fish, unlike no-mesh/no-light traps, which sampled only adults. Our findings suggest that in situ predation on larvae and juveniles within light traps should not be overlooked. The occurrence of piscivorous and cannibalistic behaviour in Hypseleotris spp. is also discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Extensive forms of shrimp aquaculture have become an important source of income for farm households in the brackish water region of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The economic and production characteristics of farms are discussed in this paper, based on a 1997 farm survey, with particular emphasis on shrimp farming practices. Two types of shrimp fanning practice were observed, one based on natural recruitment of seedstock with few supplementary inputs, and the other based on relatively high cash investments in Penaeus monodon seedstock and other inputs. Households practising monodon culture made significantly more income, but faced high risk associated with shrimp mortality. An investigation of the factors affecting monodon yields indicated that investment in higher quality inputs had a positive effect on yield and income. However, further research is needed on the extent to which management can reduce risk of shrimp mortality by investing in such premium quality inputs. 相似文献
