On the Transvaal Highveld studies were made of the response of Eragrostis curvula to applications of nitrogenous fertilizers. In one series of experiments nitrogen dressings were applied annually to a pasture over a period of 8 years. In a second series measurements were made of the effects of applying nitrogen to pastures of different ages. During the last 30 years, 434 epiphytic lichen taxa have beenrecorded from the native pinewoods of Scotland. Of these lichens,about 219 have been recorded from the bark, lignum or stumpsof pine (Pinus sylvestris) itself. Eighteen species are, inthe British Isles, confined to these native pinewoods, whichare themselves confined to the Scottish Highlands. A resumeis presented of the habitats and niches available to lichensin the native pinewoods, using examples of the most characteristicspecies for each. The pinewood habitat for epiphyticlichens is by no means restricted to pine, but also includesassociated trees, shrubs and subshrubs, especially birch, rowan,holly, aspen, juniper and heather. The strong eastwestvariation in the composition of the lichen flora is outlined.By comparison of species lists from pinewood stands of knownancientness with those from mature plantations distant fromthe core pinewoods, an additional c. 60 speciescan be considered as indicative of an ecological continuityof the pinewood habitat. From this pool of c. 77 species, aNative Pinewood Index of Ecological Continuity is presentedas a useful tool for biodiversity assessments of pinewoods. 相似文献

Same‐day mass sterilization of feral cats requires rapid onset, short‐duration anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to compare our current anesthetic protocol, Telazol–ketamine–xylazine (TKX) with medetomidine–ketamine–buprenorphine (MKB). Feral female cats received either IM TKX (n = 68; 0.25 mL cat?1; tiletamine 12.5 mg, zolazepam 12.5 mg, K 20 mg, and X 5 mg per 0.25 mL) or MKB (n = 17; M 40 µg kg?1, K 15 mg kg?1, and B 10 µg kg?1). Intervals measured included time from injection to recumbency, time to surgery, duration of surgery, and time from reversal of anesthesia (TKX: yohimbine 0.50 mg cat?1 IV; MKB: atipamezole 0.50 mg cat?1 IM) to sternal recumbency. Following instrumentation (Vet/Ox 4403 and Vet/BP Plus 6500), physiological measurements were recorded at 5‐minute intervals, and included rectal temperature, heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), SpO2 (lingual or rectal probes), and indirect mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) (oscillometric method). Nonparametric means were compared using Mann–Whitney U‐tests. Parametric means were compared using a two‐factorial anova with Bonferroni's t‐tests. The alpha‐priori significance level was p < 0.05. Values were mean ± SD. Body weight (TKX: 2.9 ± 0.5 kg, MKB: 2.7 ± 0.7 kg), time to recumbency (TKX: 4 ± 1 minutes, MKB: 3 ± 1 minutes), time to surgery (TKX: 28 ± 7 minutes, MKB: 28 ± 5 minutes), and duration of surgery (TKX: 11 ± 7 minutes, MKB: 8 ± 5 minutes) did not differ between groups. In contrast, MKB cats required less time from reversal to sternal recumbency (TKX: 68 ± 41 minutes, MKB: 7 ± 2 minutes) and were recumbent for shorter duration (TKX: 114 ± 39 minutes, MKB: 53 ± 6 minutes). Temperature decreased during the study in both groups, but overall temperature was higher in MKB cats (38.0 ± 0.95 °C) than in TKX cats (37.5 ± 0.95 °C). RR, HR, and SpO2 did not change during the study in either group. However, overall HR and RR were higher in TKX cats (RR: 18 ± 8 breaths minute?1, HR: 153 ± 30 beats minute?1) compared to MKB cats (RR: 15 ± 7 breaths minute?1, HR: 128 ± 19 beats minute?1). In contrast, overall SpO2 was lower in the TKX group (90 ± 6%) compared to the MKB group (94 ± 4%). MAP was also lower in the TKX group (112 ± 29 mm Hg) compared to that in the MKB group (122 ± 20 mm Hg). However, MAP increased in the TKX group during surgery compared to pre‐surgical values, but did not change in the MKB group. The results of this study suggested that MKB might be more suitable as an anesthetic for the purpose of mass sterilization of feral female cats. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether administration of glucocorticoids provides additional benefits to environmental management of horses with recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). ANIMALS: 28 horses with RAO. PROCEDURE: Horses were classified as having mild, moderate, or severe RAO. Within each category, horses were randomly assigned to receive inhaled fluticasone propionate, inhaled control substance, or oral administration of prednisone. During the 4-week study, horses were maintained outdoors and fed a pelleted feed. Clinical scores, pulmonary function, results of cytologic examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and adrenal gland function were determined before and 2 and 4 weeks after initiation of treatment. RESULTS: Clinical score and pulmonary function of all RAO-affected horses improved during the treatment period. After 4 weeks, clinical scores and pulmonary function of horses treated with a glucocorticoid were not different from those for the control treatment. In horses with severe RAO, treatment with fluticasone for 2 weeks resulted in significantly greater improvement in pulmonary function, compared with pulmonary function after treatment with prednisone or the control substance. Treatment with a glucocorticoid for 4 weeks and a low-dust environment did not have any effect on cellular content of BALF Treatment with prednisone for 2 weeks resulted in a significant decrease in serum cortisol concentration, compared with concentrations after administration of fluticasone or the control substance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Environmental management is the most important factor in the treatment of horses with RAO. Early treatment with inhaled fluticasone can help accelerate recovery of horses with severe RAO. 相似文献

Summary Phenolic acid contents were determined in seeds from five buckwheat cultivars grown at three locations in western Canada for four years. Buckwheat contained 12–16 g/kg of total phenolic acids, about 3 g/kg of esterified phenolic acids, and 8–13 g/kg of etherified phenolic acids. The latter represented 70 to 79% of the total phenolics. Variation in phenolic acids was mainly due to cultivar, seasonal effects and their interaction, while growing location had no significant effect. Phenolic acid contents of buckwheat were independent of seed color and protein content. Esterified phenolic acids exhibited a negative significant association with etherified phenolic acids in buckwheat. 相似文献

Bovine respiratory tract disease is a multi-factorial disease complex involving several viruses and bacteria. Viruses that play prominent roles in causing the bovine respiratory disease complex include bovine herpesvirus-1, bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine viral diarrhea virus and parinfluenza-3 virus. Bacteria that play prominent roles in this disease complex are Mannheimia haemolytica and Mycoplasma bovis. Other bacteria that infect the bovine respiratory tract of cattle are Histophilus (Haemophilus) somni and Pasteurella multocida. Frequently, severe respiratory tract disease in cattle is associated with concurrent infections of these pathogens. Like other pathogens, the viral and bacterial pathogens of this disease complex have co-evolved with their hosts over millions of years. As much as the hosts have diversified and fine-tuned the components of their immune system, the pathogens have also evolved diverse and sophisticated strategies to evade the host immune responses. These pathogens have developed intricate mechanisms to thwart both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune responses of their hosts. This review presents an overview of the strategies by which the pathogens suppress host immune responses, as well as the strategies by which the pathogens modify themselves or their locations in the host to evade host immune responses. These immune evasion strategies likely contribute to the failure of currently-available vaccines to provide complete protection to cattle against these pathogens. 相似文献

The aims of this study were to assess the effectiveness of the nitrification inhibitors dicyandiamide (DCD) and nitrapyrin
on reducing emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) following application of NH4
+ or NH4
+-forming fertilisers to grassland and spring barley. DCD was applied to grassland with N fertiliser applications in April
and August in 1992 and 1993, inhibiting N2O emissions by varying amounts depending on the fertiliser form and the time of application. Over periods of up to 2 months
following each application of DCD, emissions of N2O were reduced by 58–78% when applied with urea (U) and 41–65% when applied with ammonium sulphate (AS). Annual emissions
(April to March) of N2O were reduced by up to 58% and 56% in 1992–1993 and 1993–1994, respectively. Applying DCD to ammonium nitrate (AN) fertilised
grassland did not reduce emissions after the April 1993 fertilisation, but emissions following the August application were
reduced. Nitrapyrin was only applied once, with the April fertiliser applications in 1992, reducing N2O emissions over the following 12 months by up to 40% when applied with U. When N fertiliser was applied in June without DCD,
the DCD applied in April was still partly effective; N2O emissions were reduced 50%, 60% and 80% as effectively as the emissions following the April applications, for AS in 1993,
U in 1992 and 1993, respectively. In 1992 the persistence of an inhibitory effect was greater for nitrapyrin than for DCD,
increasing after the June fertiliser application as overall emissions from U increased. There was no apparent reduction in
effectiveness following repeated applications of DCD over the 2 years. N2O emissions from spring barley, measured only in 1993, were lower than from grassland. DCD reduced emissions from applied
U by 40% but there was no reduction with AN. The results demonstrate considerable scope for reducing emissions by applying
nitrification inhibitors with NH4
+ or NH4
+-forming fertilisers; this is especially so for crops such as intensively managed grass where there are several applications
of fertiliser nitrogen per season, as the effect of inhibitors applied in April persists until after a second fertiliser application
in June.

Purpose
To better understand the effect of fertilizer practices on soil acidification and soil organic matter (SOM) stocks in a rice-wheat system, a field experiment was conducted to (i) investigate the influence of fertilizer practices on the Al forms in solid phases and the distribution of Al species in water extracts and (ii) explore the relationship between the Al forms, the quantity and composition of SOM, and soil acidity.Materials and methods
Seven fertilizer treatments including CL (no fertilizer), NK, PK, NPK, N2PK (PK and 125 % of N), NP2K (NK and 125 % of P), and organic fertilizer (OF) were applied to induce various changes in pH and SOM composition (i.e., total C and N contents, C/N ratio, and SOM recalcitrant indices) in a rice-wheat system. After 6-year cultivation, different pools of Al forms (i.e., amorphous Al; organically bound Al of varying stability; exchangeable Al; water-soluble inorganic Al3+, Al-OH, Al-F, Al-SiO3, and Al-SO4; and organic Al monomers) were quantified and related with SOM composition and soil pH during the wheat phase.Results and discussion
Fertilizer types significantly changed soil pH and SOM composition and which explained 84 % of the variance of Al forms using redundancy analysis. An interaction between soil pH and SOM quality on Al forms also existed but only accounted for a very small (6 %) portion of the variation. Compared to CL and chemical fertilizer, OF practice with relative low SOM stabilization is likely to favor the formation of amorphous Al in order to bind more SOM. The decrease in exchangeable acidity and water-extractable Al via hydroxyl-Al precipitation but not in the form of organo-aluminum complexes evidenced this phenomenon. In contrast, chemical fertilizer input increased exchangeable Al and water extract Al (especially Al3+), partly at the expense of organically bound Al. The destabilization of organic-aluminum complexes was a mechanism of pH buffering evidenced by the increased soluble Al-dissolved organic matter (DOM) as soil pH decreases. Further, the magnitude of this trend was much greater for elevated N input compared with P input.Conclusions
Chemical fertilizer with relative high SOM stabilization favored the formation of exchangeable Al and soluble Al resulting in soil acidification, whereas OF with relative low SOM stabilization tended to transform exchangeable Al and soluble Al to amorphous Al, thereby alleviating soil acidification and enhancing C stocks in a rice-wheat system.380.

What genes and regulatory sequences contribute to the organization and functioning of neural circuits and molecular pathways in the brain that support social behavior? How does social experience interact with information in the genome to modulate brain activity? Here, we address these questions by highlighting progress that has been made in identifying and understanding two key "vectors of influence" that link genes, the brain, and social behavior: (i) Social information alters gene expression in the brain to influence behavior, and (ii) genetic variation influences brain function and social behavior. We also discuss how evolutionary changes in genomic elements influence social behavior and outline prospects for a systems biology of social behavior. 相似文献
