Protons and helium nuclei are the most abundant components of the cosmic radiation. Precise measurements of their fluxes are needed to understand the acceleration and subsequent propagation of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. We report precision measurements of the proton and helium spectra in the rigidity range 1 gigavolt to 1.2 teravolts performed by the satellite-borne experiment PAMELA (payload for antimatter matter exploration and light-nuclei astrophysics). We find that the spectral shapes of these two species are different and cannot be described well by a single power law. These data challenge the current paradigm of cosmic-ray acceleration in supernova remnants followed by diffusive propagation in the Galaxy. More complex processes of acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays are required to explain the spectral structures observed in our data.  相似文献

Seeds of cabbage, lettuce, millet, radish, turnip, and wheat were treated with solutions containing Be, Ni, Tl, or V, and subsequent effects on seed germination and radicle elongation were measured after three days. Treatment with low concentrations of Be, Ni, or V stimulated root elongation in most species. Higher concentrations of these elements and all treatment with Tl caused reductions in root elongation. In general, turnip and lettuce were the most sensitive of the plants studied to the metals tested, while wheat and millet were the least sensitive.  相似文献

A 3-year-old Thoroughbred colt was presented for evaluation of azotemia and anorexia. Physical examination revealed a ureterolith in the left ureter, approximately 10 cm from the bladder, which was thought to obstruct urine flow by approximately 90% when viewed cystoscopically. Ultrasonographic examination of both kidneys revealed indistinct corticomedullary junctions, and the right kidney was more hyperechoic. A percutaneous biopsy of the right kidney revealed chronic interstitial nephritis with marked interstitial medullary fibrosis. Medical therapy consisting of IV fluids, sodium chloride PO, and ammonium chloride PO was initiated. Ureteroscopic electrohydraulic lithotripsy via a perineal urethrostomy was used to successfully remove the stone. Klebsiella oxytoca , which responded to oral enrofloxacin therapy, was cultured from the urine after surgery. Azotemia resolved and the horse resumed training.  相似文献

Three in vitro experiments were conducted to determine the effects of pH on ruminal conversion of L-tryptophan (TRP) to 3-methylindole (3-MI) and indole (IND). Experiment 1 involved 2 closed-system incubations, each with triplicate replications of buffered ruminal fluid at initial pH of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, and 8.0. Highest molar conversions of TRP to 3-MI were 61.5 +/- 2.7% and 64.3 +/- 0.8% at initial pH treatments of 7.5 and 7.0 (final pH 7.3 and 6.9) for the 2 incubations, respectively. Experiment 2 used duplicate continuous cultures at each of 4 pH treatments. Following a common 5-day pretreatment period, effluent pH averaged 5.6, 6.1, 6.5, and 6.9 for the respective treatments. Data for 4 subsequent 5-day time periods showed production of 3-MI was affected by pH treatment (P less than 0.01), time (P greater than 0.01), and treatment X time (P less than 0.01); conversion of TRP to 3-MI reached 78% at pH 6.9 and decreased to less than 1% at pH 5.6. Production of IND was not related to pH treatment (P greater than 0.10). Total moles of volatile fatty acid (VFA) carbon produced showed a pH treatment X time interaction (P less than 0.01) which reflected a trend toward decreasing VFA production at lower pH and increasing VFA production at higher pH. Direct electron microscopy (EM) and enzyme-immunoassay (rotazyme) results for the detection of rotaviruses in 346 enteric specimens from calves, lambs, piglets and foals were compared. The rotazyme test was at least 3 times more sensitive than direct EM in diagnosing infection. Rotavirus antigen was demonstrated by rotazyme in 22% of 280 scour samples and in 27% of 66 samples from non-scouring animals. There was an association between diarrhoea and higher amounts of rotavirus antigen. This prevalence of rotaviruses detected in animals with diarrhoea highlights the significant involvement of other pathogens identified in the study including Eimeria, Cryptosporidia, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, and other viruses.  相似文献

The relationship between the pulmonary toxicity of 3- methylindole (3MI, skatole) and the mixed-function oxidase (MFO) system was investigated. Nine goats assigned to three groups were given a jugular infusion of [14C]3MI (0.02 to 0.03 g of 3MI/kg of body weight containing 0.5 muCi/kg of body weight) for 1.5 hours to induce acute pulmonary edema. Two groups of three goats each were treated with phenobarbital (PB) or piperonyl butoxide (BT) prior to 3MI infusion to induce or to inhibit the MFO system. Three goats were used as 3MI controls. During a 72-hour test period, blood was collected for determination of plasma 3MI concentration and radioactivity. Urine was collected and was fractionated by column chromatography. The severity of pulmonary lesions was evaluated by gross and microscopic examination. Pretreatment with BT prevented the onset of acute pulmonary edema. Goats pretreated with PB had more severe lung lesions than did 3MI controls. Plasma of goats pretreated with BT had a longer half-life (2.1 hours) of radioactivity, whereas plasma of goats pretreated with PB had a shorter half-life (1.0 hour) when compared with plasma of 3MI control goats (1.5 hours) given the same dosage of [14C]3MI (P less than 0.025). The plasma half-life of 3MI was longer (P less than 0.025) in BT-pretreated goats (0.45 hour) than that in PB-pretreated goats (0.26 hour). At 72 hours, 70% to 98% of the infused radioactivity had been excreted in the urine. The pattern of urinary metabolites of 3MI was altered in BT-pretreated goats compared with patterns in control and PB-pretreated goats. Results indicate that the MFO system is one of the pathways involved in the metabolism of 3MI and that pulmonary toxicosis results from metabolism of 3MI by this enzyme system.  相似文献

Isolated hepatocytes were prepared from 100- to 125-kg Holstein male calves (n = 10) by perfusion of the caudate process of the caudate lobe of the liver. The 11th or 12th rib on the right side was resected to provide exposure of the caudate process. Complete postsurgical recovery of the donor from partial lobectomy was confirmed by growth data and serum chemical and hematologic criteria. Hepatocytes were isolated under aseptic conditions, using a 2-step collagenase vascular perfusion procedure. Hepatocyte preparations averaged 85% viability, and the yield averaged 1.2 X 10(7) viable hepatocytes/g of (wet weight) liver. Morphologic characteristics of hepatocytes examined under light and scanning electron microscopy were considered normal, except for occasional surface blebs. Freshly isolated hepatocytes in suspension rapidly decreased in viability and xenobiotic metabolizing capacity (aldrin epoxidation and ethoxycoumarin 0-deethylation and 7-hydroxycoumarin glucuronidation and sulfation), and hepatocytes surviving the initial 2 to 3 hours appeared to undergo repair. As an alternative, primary monolayer cultures on collagen-coated plates were evaluated. Hepatocytes attached to the collagen surface within 4 hours and appeared flattened by 12 hours. Although metabolic activity decreased about 30% over 8 hours in culture, the pattern of ethoxycoumarin metabolites was relatively constant. It was not determined to what extent the apparent loss of metabolic capacity was caused by hepatocyte detachment from the collagen surface. Although complicated by the requirement for asepsis, primary cultures were superior to suspensions for xenobiotic metabolism studies in cattle.  相似文献
