Background
Hyperaccumulation, the rare capacity of certain plant species to accumulate toxic trace elements to levels several orders of magnitude higher than other species growing on the same site, is thought to be an elemental defense mechanism against herbivores and pathogens. Previous research has shown that selenium (Se) hyperaccumulation protects plants from a variety of herbivores and pathogens. Selenium hyperaccumulating plants sequester Se in discrete locations in the leaf periphery, making them potentially more susceptible to some herbivore feeding modes than others. In this study we investigate the protective function of Se in the Se hyperaccumulators Stanleya pinnata and Astragalus bisulcatus against two cell disrupting herbivores, the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). 相似文献22.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different medium replacement intervals on the viability, antral cavity formation, growth and in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes from caprine and ovine pre‐antral follicles. Pre‐antral ovarian follicles (≥150 μm) were isolated from the ovarian cortex of goats and sheep and were individually cultured for 24 days using two different medium replacement intervals [2 days (T1) or 6 days (T2)]. Follicle development was evaluated on the basis of antral cavity formation, increases in follicular diameter and the presence of healthy cumulus oocyte complexes and fully grown oocytes. For caprine species, results showed a higher percentage (p < 0.05) of viable follicles in T1 than T2 from day 6 until the end of the culture. In addition, when comparing both treatments after the same culture duration, the rate of antrum formation was significantly higher in T1 than in T2 from day 12 onwards. Yet, in ovines, when both treatments were compared on day 24 of the culture, there were more viable follicles in T2 than in T1 (p < 0.05). In the caprine species, percentages of fully grown oocytes (≥110 μm) acceptable for IVM after 24 days of culture were significantly higher in normal follicles cultured in T1 (30.0%) than in T2 (6.7%; p < 0.05). On the other hand, in ovines, at the end of the culture, the percentage of oocytes destined for IVM was higher in T2 than in T1 (23.5% vs 2.9%; p < 0.05). In conclusion, under the same conditions, the frequency of medium replacement significantly affected the in vitro development of caprine and ovine pre‐antral follicles. A ten‐year‐old, male castrated Springer Spaniel was presented for dysphagia, ptyalism, and regurgitation. Evidence of megaesophagus and mild aspiration pneumonia were apparent on thoracic radiographs. A diagnosis of focal acquired myasthenia gravis was suspected and subsequently confirmed with a positive serum acetylcholine (ACh) receptor antibody concentration (3.87 nM/L). A gastrostomy tube was placed shortly after presentation; food and drugs (including azathioprine) were administered through the tube. After transient improvement, the dog suddenly deteriorated clinically, experiencing frequent episodes of regurgitation and developing severe aspiration pneumonia. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), a novel immunosuppressive drug with relative specificity for lymphocytes, was instituted every twelve hours via the gastrostomy tube. Within four days of beginning MMF therapy, both clinical evidence of pharyngeal/esophageal dysfunction and radiographic evidence of megaesophagus had resolved. Initially, clinical side‐effects of combined MMF/AZA administration were not apparent, but the patient experienced several vomiting episodes during the third week of treatment. The vomiting resolved after decreasing the dose of both drugs. The patient made a full recovery, and a one‐month follow‐up ACh receptor antibody concentration was normal (0.26 nM/L). After one month of combination therapy, the patient was weaned off of AZA and maintained on MMF as the sole immunosuppressive drug. The dog was subsequently weaned off of MMF on two occasions. Mycophenolate mofetil was reinstituted after the first discontinuation due to the development of profound appendicular muscle weakness two days after stopping MMF; the weakness resolved within 24 hours of reinstituting MMF. A positive ACh receptor antibody concentration (0.89 nM/L) after the second MMF weaning prompted the second reinstitution of MMF. Two months following this second MMF reinstitution, the dog was again serologically negative (0.51 nM/L) for myasthenia gravis. At the time of last followup, the dog remained in clinical remission eight months after initial presentation. The use of MMF to treat acquired myasthenia gravis in dogs has not been reported previously. The literature concerning MMF and its potential use in treating patients with autoimmune diseases is discussed. 相似文献

A large tumour present on the proximal tibia of a Bull Mastiff dog was diagnosed on histological appearance as a Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma. These tumours, rarely identified in domestic animals, but well recognised in humans, are typically pleomorphic sarcomas with histiocytic and fibroblastic differentiation. A case of generalised protothecosis in a Collie dog is discussed. A long-standing history of severe colitis was the major clinical sign. Dissemination to many organs was confirmed histologically. Possible pathogenesis is discussed along with a review of the literature. The possibility of a breed disposition in Collie dogs is discussed. Objective To determine if juvenile pearl oysters ( Pinctada maxima ) infected with Haplosporidium hinei are also infected with another haplosporidian parasite, Minchinia occulta .
Design Archived samples of pearl oysters infected with H. hinei were examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and in situ hybridisation (ISH) to analyse and identify haplosporidians. A 144-bp and 220-bp region of Minchinia DNA were targeted by PCR and amplified DNA from formalin-fixed H. hinei -infected pearl oyster samples was sequenced. A 25-bp oligonucleotide probe targeting a variable section of the parasite's small subunit rRNA gene was used in ISH.
Results The results of DNA-based diagnostic assays supported each other. The sequences obtained by PCR were found to be almost identical to M. occulta from rock oysters and the ISH assay demonstrated infection with M. occulta in affected pearl oysters. ISH indicated a prevalence of infection of 26.7% in one of the previous outbreaks.
Conclusion Pearl oyster spat are susceptible to infection by a Minchinia parasite, most likely M. occulta , which was recently identified in rock oysters within the pearl-producing zones of Western Australia and is associated with mortalities of up to 80% in this species. The occurrence of haplosporidian co-infections in pearl oysters suggests the immunocompetence of juvenile oysters may be an important factor in preventing infection and therefore preventing mortalities such as those occurring in the recent outbreaks of pearl oyster oedema disease. 相似文献
