Abstract AIMS: To investigate the perceived adverse effects of a particular batch of ketamine during induction of anaesthesia in sheep and to assess if any adverse effects would make intubation more difficult for the veterinary students. METHODS: Thirty adult sheep (mean bodyweight 74.5 (SD 9.4) kg) were randomly assigned to one of six groups of five sheep. Sheep in Groups A and B received I/V 0.5 mg/kg diazepam and 10 mg/kg ketamine (Ketamine Injection; Parnell Laboratories NZ Ltd, of the suspect batch); those in Groups C and D received I/V 0.5 mg/kg diazepam and 10 mg/kg ketamine (Ketalar; Hospira NZ Ltd.), and those in Groups E and F received I/V 2 μg/kg medetomidine and 2 mg/kg alphaxalone. In Groups A, C and E, intubation was by an experienced anaesthetist, and in Groups B, D and F intubation was by a veterinary student. Time from injection to successful intubation, the ease of intubation, saturation of haemoglobin with oxygen (SpO2) and partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2) were measured before the sheep were connected to an anaesthetic machine and allowed to breath oxygen. Times to extubation, holding its head up and standing, maximum and minimum heart rates, respiratory rates, maximal end tidal CO2, and the quality of recovery were then recorded. RESULTS: There were no measurable differences in outcomes between sheep in Groups A and B compared with C and D. Time to intubation was slightly shorter for the experienced anaesthetist than the student, but the difference was not significant. The sheep in Groups E and F took less time to recover than those in Groups A?D (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences between the groups in either the ease of induction or quality of recovery. Most sheep in Groups E and F showed minor excitatory effects, mainly at induction, which did not interfere with induction. Respiratory rates were lower in Groups E and F than Groups A?D (p<0.01), but SpO2 was higher in Groups E and F than A and B (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical impression that the batch of Parnell ketamine produced unexpected effects was shown to be incorrect. All the combinations produced anaesthesia that allowed intubation by the veterinary student. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: All the drug combinations produced satisfactory anaesthesia in sheep, but the alphaxaloneand medetomidine combination resulted in faster recovery. 相似文献
The feature identification and location experiment (FILE) senses radiation from the earth in spectral bands centered at 0.65 and 0.85 micrometers and compares ratios of the reflected solar radiation in the two wavelengths to make real-time classification decisions about four primary features: water, vegetation, bare land, and a cloud-snow-ice class. The radiance ratio classification algorithm successfully made automatic data-selection decisions. The classification image obtained on the mission is providing information needed to evaluate the FILE algorithm and system performance. 相似文献
Ninety-six pigs were used to investigate the relationship of diet (control vs fat-supplemented with equal energy:protein ratios), porcine somatotropin (pST) administration (non-treated; 2 mg/d, daily injection; and 2 mg/d, 6-wk implant), and sex (barrows and gilts) to performance and carcass characteristics. Diet and pST treatments were initiated at 87 kg of BW and continued for 38 d. Both the fat-supplemented diet (P less than .001) and pST treatment (P less than .0001) improved feed efficiency. The effects of diet were accounted for by differences in energy density of the diets. Across diets, pST improved gain:feed ratio by 29 and 16% in pigs treated by daily injection and the implant, respectively; the two modes of delivery resulted in different responses (P less than .01). Circulating insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels, determined from blood samples drawn on d 35, were increased 2.5-fold above those of controls in pigs treated by either daily injection or the implant. However, the elevation of glucose and decrease in blood urea nitrogen concentrations in response to pST were of a greater magnitude in pigs treated by daily injection. Similarly, reductions in backfat thickness and the rate of backfat accretion determined by ultrasound were greater in response to the daily injection of pST than in response to the implant. Lean meat ratio, calculated from measurements with a Fat-O-Meater probe, was increased by 6 and 13% by the implant and daily injection, respectively. It is concluded that although the use of an implant that delivers pST on a continuous basis was as effective as the same dose administered as a bolus injection for increasing IGF-I levels, it was less effective in improving feed efficiency and carcass quality. 相似文献
Infestations of larval and nymphal Ixodes spp. were identified in 16 dogs and 16 cats from several small animal clinics in Sydney. Cases occurred in late summer or autumn, peaking in February, and were seasonally recurrent in some individuals. Clinical signs of infestation included a papular dermatitis and irritation or pruritus that ranged from severe to mild or absent. The distribution of tick attachment tended to be cranial and ventral, with the face, legs, axillae and ventrum the most commonly affected sites. The estimated number of ticks in each infestation varied from less than 10 to more than 100. Basic morphological examination of ticks collected from affected animals was performed by attending veterinarians using light microscopy, and larvae and nymphs belonging to the Ixodes genus were identified. Ticks collected from 17 animals and submitted to the Department of Medical Entomology, Westmead Hospital were putatively identified as I. trichosuri (57%) and I. holocyclus (25%) larvae. Histopathological samples of attachment sites collected from three dogs and one cat were characterised by ticks attached in well-demarcated invaginations of the skin ('tick craters') associated with variable epidermal and/or dermal necrosis, focal eosinophilic intraspinous pustules, mild to marked eosinophilic and neutrophilic, superficial to deep, dermal perivascular to interstitial inflammation, and moderate to marked superficial dermal oedema and red cell extravasation. Impedance soil water probes enable frequent and non‐destructive determination of soil water status in situations where gravimetric soil sampling is too demanding of time and sampling space. The ThetaProbe is an impedance soil water probe requiring calibration for local soil conditions, because measurement accuracy can be affected by properties of the soil. Often, only a single calibration is performed for an experimental site. An experiment investigating the seedbed to 75‐mm depth across a field topography with variable soil properties was examined to determine which soil properties affected the calibration of the ThetaProbe, and if soil‐specific calibration was required to derive suitable estimates of the water status in the experiment. Experimental factors examined included hillslope aspect, hillslope position, crop residue and soil depth. Soil properties, other than volumetric water content, significantly affecting the probe measurements were bulk density, electrical conductivity and temperature. The probe underestimated soil water at very low water contents, and overestimated soil water at contents greater than 11 m3 m?3, compared with gravimetric measurements. A single calibration, not corrected for hillslope position at a water content of 20 m3 m?3, overestimated water content by 0.02 m3 m?3 in the summit hillslope position and underestimated water content by 0.04 m3 m?3 in the toeslope position. A single calibration, not corrected for soil depth at a water content of 20 m3 m?3, overestimated water content by 0.02 m3 m?3 in the 0‐ to 25‐mm soil layer and underestimated water content by 0.03 m3 m?3 in the 50‐ to 75‐mm layer. The complexity of microsites in a shallow seedbed requires soil‐specific calibration in field experiments containing heterogeneous soil properties. 相似文献
Functional connectivity is vital for plant species dispersal, but little is known about how habitat loss and the presence of green infrastructure interact to affect both functional and structural connectivity, and the impacts of each on species groups.
Objectives
We investigate how changes in the spatial configuration of species-rich grasslands and related green infrastructure such as road verges, hedgerows and forest borders in three European countries have influenced landscape connectivity, and the effects on grassland plant biodiversity.
Methods
We mapped past and present land use for 36 landscapes in Belgium, Germany and Sweden, to estimate connectivity based on simple habitat spatial configuration (structural connectivity) and accounting for effective dispersal and establishment (functional connectivity) around focal grasslands. We used the resulting measures of landscape change to interpret patterns in plant communities.
Results
Increased presence of landscape connecting elements could not compensate for large scale losses of grassland area resulting in substantial declines in structural and functional connectivity. Generalist species were negatively affected by connectivity, and responded most strongly to structural connectivity, while functional connectivity determined the occurrence of grassland specialists in focal grasslands. Restored patches had more generalist species, and a lower density of grassland specialist species than ancient patches.
Conclusions
Protecting both species rich grasslands and dispersal pathways within landscapes is essential for maintaining grassland biodiversity. Our results show that increases in green infrastructure have not been sufficient to offset loss of semi-natural habitat, and that landscape links must be functionally effective in order to contribute to grassland diversity.
Some have argued that variable rate application (VRT) of fertilizer is appropriate and profitable for the highly productive and fertile fields of the central cornbelt, but the proposition has not been tested. In this field experiment treatments of variably and uniformly applied phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizer and a control treatment with no P or K fertilizer were applied in a randomized complete block design at six locations in central Illinois in 1994. Individual experimental units were from 1,000 to 1,500 m in length and about 20 m in width. Fertilizer application rate was based upon a 100 m grid soil sampling. The variable rate treatment rate for each plot was based upon interpolated values of the soil fertility of each portion of the experimental unit. Uniform rate treatments were based upon the median soil fertility value for the entire field. Yield estimates were obtained with grain yield monitors. Neither corn nor soybean yield was significantly affected by fertilizer application treatment. We propose this lack of an effect is due to insurance built into the current fertility recommendations. A response to variable treatments will not be seen if there is no response to fertilization. Variable rate application will probably be most useful in fields with areas of very low soil tests. 相似文献
Intensification of human activities has caused drastic losses in semi-natural habitats, resulting as well in declining connectivity between remaining fragments. Successful future restoration should therefore increase both habitat area and connectivity. The first steps in a framework for doing so are addressed here, which involve the mapping of past habitat change. We present a method which is unique in: the large area covered (2500 km2), the high resolution of the data (25 × 25 m), the long period assessed (70 years), and a system for translation of land use maps into Broad Habitat Types using soil surveys.We digitised land use maps from the 1930s for the county of Dorset in southern England. The resulting map was compared to the UK Land Cover Map of 2000. For our example area, land use shifted dramatically to more intensive agriculture: 97% of all semi-natural grasslands were converted into agriculturally-improved grassland or arable land as were large proportions of the heathlands and rough grasslands (?57%). The other important driver of change was afforestation (+25%). The larger habitat areas became fragmented, with average fragment size of different habitats falling by 31–94%. Furthermore, the connectivity between fragments dropped drastically, by up to 98%.Analyses such as those presented here not only quantify the scale and pattern of habitat loss, but are important to inform land-use planning to restore biodiversity by both increasing the available habitat and facilitating dispersal among habitat fragments.
