Peripheral populations are often small and isolated compared to those in the range core, in part due to the patchy distribution
of suitable habitats at range margins. It follows that peripheral populations typically occur at lower densities and are more
susceptible to extinction, but their persistence may be facilitated through connectivity with core areas. Relationships between
connectivity and the distribution of animal populations have not yet been fully evaluated, especially for large carnivores
having extensive spatial needs and specialized habitat requirements. Using observations of snow tracks, we modeled occurrence
of Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) in relation to landscape characteristics along their southern range periphery in Ontario, Canada; we sought to assess functional
connectivity of lynx habitat along the southern margins of the range. As observed in other studies, young coniferous forests
had the highest probability of lynx occurrence, likely due to their association with snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). We used the occurrence model to parameterize a resistance surface and then circuit theory to predict functional connectivity
along the southern periphery of lynx distribution. Lynx typically travelled through landscapes with higher connectivity than
random paths, implying that lynx habitat requirements in their southern range likely extend beyond habitat composition, and
that conservation efforts should seek to preserve metapopulation dynamics through functional connectivity of suitable habitat
across larger spatial scales. 相似文献
Landscape heterogeneity can influence animal dispersal by causing a directional bias in dispersal rate, as certain landscape
configurations might promote, impede, or prevent movement and gene flow. In forested landscapes, logging operations often
contribute to heterogeneity that can reduce functional connectivity for some species. American martens (Martes americana) are one such species, as they are considered specialists of late-seral coniferous forests. We assessed marten gene flow
to test the hypothesis that habitat management has maintained landscape connectivity for martens in the managed forests of
Ontario, Canada. We genotyped 653 martens at 12 microsatellite loci, sampled from 29 sites across Ontario. We expected that
if forest management has an effect on marten gene flow, we would see a correlation between effective resistance, estimated
by circuit theory, and genetic distance, estimated by population graphs. Although we found a positive relationship between
effective resistance and genetic distance (Mantel r = 0.249, P < 0.001), marten gene flow was better described by isolation by Euclidean distance (Mantel r = 0.410, P < 0.001). Our results suggest that managed forests in Ontario are well connected for marten and neither impede nor promote
marten gene flow at the provincial scale. 相似文献
An investigation of the influence of soil properties on microbial community dynamics in soil on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island found that both carbon and nitrogen were important factors in determining soil microbial community structure. The phylogenetic diversity of soil microbial communities in hydrocarbon contaminated and non-contaminated sites was compared to the diversity of hydrocarbon-degrading genes and soil physicochemical characteristics. Genes involved in hydrocarbon degradation including alkane mono-oxygenase, catchecol-2,3-dioxygenase and naphthalene dioxygenase were found throughout the study sites. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 16S rRNA and alkB genes found that the patterns of diversity of these two genes were only correlated with each other where measurable levels of hydrocarbons were detected. We found that different sections of the microbial community are affected by different environmental factors depending on whether hydrocarbons were present. The overall microbial community structure as measured by the 16S rRNA gene was most influenced by the presence of carbon both as total organic carbon and as petroleum hydrocarbons. The alkane-degrading community was also influenced by carbon. Where hydrocarbons were present petroleum hydrocarbon concentration as well as the form and concentration of nitrogen present also influenced the alkane-degrading community. This level of complexity in the microbial community dynamics suggests that it is unlikely that one single environmental factor is responsible for structuring microbial communities. 相似文献
Objective-To determine the apparent prevalence of shedding of Cryptosporidium spp in healthy alpaca crias and their dams on 14 farms in New York and 1 farm in Pennsylvania. Design-Cross-sectional study. Animals-110 alpaca crias and their 110 dams. Procedures-Fecal samples were obtained from 220 alpacas at 14 alpaca farms in New York and 1 farm in Pennsylvania. For each animal, age, sex, and health condition were recorded. A fecal score (1 = normally formed; 2 = soft or loose; 3 = diarrhetic) was recorded for each cria. Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified in fecal samples by a direct immunofluorescence assay. Results-Apparent prevalence of fecal shedding of Cryptosporidium oocysts was 8% (95% confidence interval, 4% to 15%) in dams and was 7% (95% confidence interval, 3% to 13%) in crias. There was no significant difference in age between dams with positive fecal test results for Cryptosporidium oocysts (median age, 4 years; range, 3 to 8 years) and dams with negative results (median age, 4 years; range, 2.5 to 19 years). No significant difference was found in age between crias with positive fecal test results (median age, 20 days; range, 7 to 53 days) and those with negative results (median, 36 days; range, 2 to 111 days). No significant difference in fecal scores was found between crias with positive versus negative fecal test results. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-A higher than previously reported apparent prevalence of fecal shedding of Cryptosporidium oocysts in healthy alpacas was found. A zoonotic risk should be considered, especially for Cryptosporidium parvum. 相似文献
Our objective was to determine whether there were differences in feeding and watering behavior of newly received healthy and morbid feedlot steers. Two separate 32-d feeding trials were conducted in Wellton, Arizona, in July and November 1996. Radio frequency technology was used to record individual animal behaviors from 108 (average weight 139 kg) and 143 (average weight 160 kg) steers in each respective trial. Steers that were subsequently identified as morbid were present at the feed bunk in greater percentages than reported in previous studies. In Trial 1, healthy steers spent more (P < .001) time at the feed bunk and had more (P < .009) feeding bouts than morbid steers. In Trial 2, healthy steers did not spend more time at the feed bunk, but they had more (P < .02) daily feeding bouts than morbid steers. There were no differences in daily time spent at the water trough by healthy or morbid steers in either trial. The greatest proportion of feeding and watering behavior occurred during the daylight hours in response to feed delivery. The pattern of time spent at the feed bunk throughout the 32-d feeding period was similar for healthy and subsequently morbid steers, but healthy steers had more feeding bouts per day. 相似文献
1. Feeding a diet supplemented with maize oil was found to elevate plasma oestradiol concentration in laying hens.
2. In a larger‐scale experiment, isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets containing 10, 20, 40 or 60 g/kg supplemental maize oil, tallow, coconut oil or fish oil were fed for 5 weeks.
3. Egg weights showed very different responses to the different fats. The responses could be described by quadratic functions that all gave optimum responses with supplemental dietary fat concentrations of about 40 g/kg. Egg weight increased the most with maize oil and was decreased with fish oil at the highest inclusion rate.
4. Measurements of egg components showed a relatively larger increase in albumen weights with maize oil than with other fats.
5. Across treatments, mean plasma oestradiol concentrations were very highly correlated (r = 0.96) with the changes in egg weights over the experimental period.
6. It is concluded that oestrogen is important in controlling egg weight and that the effect of dietary fats in influencing egg weight is mediated by an effect of the fats on oestrogen metabolism. 相似文献
