The oppositely directed magnetic field in the jovian magnetic tail is expected eventually to reconnect across the current sheet, allowing plasma produced deep inside the magnetosphere near Io's orbit to escape in the antisolar direction down the tail. The Galileo spacecraft found localized regions of strong northward and southward field components beyond about 50 jovian radii in the postmidnight, predawn sector of the jovian magnetosphere. These pockets of vertical magnetic fields can be stronger than the surrounding magnetotail and magnetodisk fields. The susceptibility of Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.), to viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) was tested. Juvenile halibut of approximately 5 g weight were subjected to challenge by intraperitoneal injection, cohabitation and immersion to a VHSV isolate from an outbreak of the disease in turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.). The intraperitoneal injection gave the highest mortality rate of 28% after 50 days. The cohabitee group suffered 19% mortality rate and the immersion group only 2%. Control groups included turbot exposed either by intraperitoneal injection or immersion which suffered mortality rates of 93 and 50%, respectively. Intraperitoneal (IP) injection, cohabitation and immersion routes of infection were used to determine if Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua (L.), of 1 and 3 g are susceptible to infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN). Mortalities of cod injected IP were significantly higher when challenged with infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) than with phosphate buffered saline. This is the first report of Atlantic cod mortalities caused by IPNV. Fish challenged by cohabitation had significantly higher mortalities than the controls, but mortalities of Atlantic cod challenged with IPNV by immersion were not significantly different from controls. Titres of IPNV in the tissues of infected fish were sometimes very high (range 102 –1010 infectious units per gram of tissue) suggesting virus replication and titres of fish that died were generally higher than those of fish which survived. However, the relatively low mortality rates when challenged by cohabitation and immersion (20% and 17%, respectively), compared to the IP injection challenge (100%) suggest that 1 and 3 g cod have low susceptibility to IPN when challenged by more natural routes. These data strongly suggest that the cause of death of experimentally challenged cod was IPNV and further histological evidence for this came from 1 g cod challenged IP with IPNV in which the pancreas showed severe necrosis and heavy immunostaining for IPNV coincidentally with the peak of mortalities. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon smolts, previously unexposed to infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), were placed into tanks of sea water at 10 °C. After 4 weeks, 40 fish were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with homogenized and filter‐sterilized kidney material obtained from salmon with clinical IPN in a marine farm in Shetland. The injected fish were cohabited with 40 untreated fish. Mortalities began in the injected fish on day 7 and reached a peak of 48% on day 14. In the cohabitation group, mortalities began on day 14 and reached a peak of 70% on day 27. The IPNV in the Shetland kidney homogenate was cultured in Chinook salmon embryo (CHSE) cells and passed twice. This cultured virus was injected i.p. into fish at various doses ranging from 10 to 107 TCID50 fish?1 4 weeks after seawater transfer. Challenge tanks contained 30 injected fish and 30 cohabitees. Mortality rates and levels were dose‐dependent. The highest dose used resulted in a similar mortality pattern as obtained with a similar dose of the Shetland kidney homogenate, indicating that virulence was retained after two passes in tissue culture. Even with the lowest dose, mortality reached 12% in the injected group and 23% in the cohabitees. The IPNV titres were high (106?109 i.u. g?1 kidney) in fish which died during the experiment and low (<105 i.u. g?1 kidney) or undetectable in surviving fish. The cultured virus (pass 3) was used in a challenge model where the population density of fish in the tanks was high (50 injected and 50 cohabitees) or low (15 injected and 15 cohabitees). In the high stocking density tank, mortalities peaked at about 35% in the injected group and at 52% in the cohabitees. In the low stocking density tank, mortalities peaked at about 40% in the injected fish but no mortality occurred in the cohabitees. However, IPNV was detected (up to 104 i.u. g?1 kidney) in 82% of cohabitees sampled on day 30. These data suggest that lethal lateral transmission of the virus is dependent on the infectious pressure from the injected group. A further trial was conducted to investigate the effect of time post‐seawater transfer on the susceptibility of post‐smolts to IPN. Groups of fish were challenged every 2 weeks from week 0–10. Few mortalities occurred at week 0 and virus titres were high in these fish. Most survivors became carriers, some with titres >106 i.u. IPNV g?1 kidney. From 2 to 10 weeks after seawater transfer, mortalities in both injected and cohabitees were substantial with viral titres >107 i.u. g?1 kidney. Survivors had lower titres and in many virus was undetectable. Throughout the experiments, moribund fish were sampled for histology and all showed typical IPN histopathology. 相似文献

Differential accumulation patterns of phosphorus and potassium by canola cultivars compared to wheat
The phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) accumulation patterns of canola (Brassica napus L.) are poorly understood, although such information is essential for determining optimal P‐ and K‐fertilizer strategies. This study investigated the patterns of P and K uptake and distribution among plant organs of three early or midmaturing canola cultivars (Tribune, Trigold, and Boomer) differing in K efficiency compared to wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Nyabing). Plants were grown in a glasshouse with nonlimiting P and K supply and harvested at eight growth stages until maturity. Maximum P accumulation by all canola cultivars occurred during late flowering (GS 5,5; 84 d after sowing), whereas P accumulation in wheat plants peaked just prior to anthesis (Z59; 73 d after sowing). Maximum accumulation of K in canola cultivars Tribune and Trigold occurred 73 d after sowing (GS 4,8), but peaked earlier (61 d after sowing) in Boomer canola (GS 4,2) and Nyabing wheat (Z55). The results highlight the importance of early P and K supply to both species; however, the extended uptake of P and K by the canola cultivars Trigold and Tribune compared to wheat suggests that availability of soil P or K postflowering may be of more importance to canola than to wheat. 相似文献

Changes in temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration that are expected in the coming decades will have profound impacts on terrestrial ecosystem net primary production (NPP). Nearly all models linking forest NPP with soil carbon (C) predict that increased NPP will result in either unchanged or increased soil C storage, and that decreased NPP will result in decreased soil C storage. However, linkages between forest productivity and soil C storage may not be so simple and direct. In an old-growth coniferous forest located in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, OR, USA, we experimentally doubled needle litter inputs, and found that actual soil respiration rates exceeded those expected due to the C added by the extra needles. Here, we estimated that this ‘priming effect’ accounted for 11.5–21.6% of annual CO2 efflux from litter-amended plots, or an additional 137–256 g C m−2 yr−1 loss of stored C to the atmosphere. Soil priming was seasonal, with greatest amounts occurring in June–August coincident with peaks in temperature and dry summer conditions. As a result of priming, mineral soil was more resistant to further mineralization during laboratory incubations. Soil lignin-derived phenols in the Double Litter plots were more oxidized than in the control, suggesting that the soil residue was more degraded. Our hypothesis that excess dissolved organic C produced from the added litter provided the link between the forest floor and mineral soil and a substrate for soil priming was not supported. Instead, the rhizosphere, and associated mycorrhizal fungi, likely responded directly to the added aboveground litter inputs. Our results revealed that enhanced NPP may lead to accelerated processing of some stored soil C, but that the effects of increased NPP on ecosystem C storage will be based on a net balance among all ecosystem C pools and are likely to be ecosystem-dependant. Forest C models need to include these complex linkages between forest productivity and soil C storage. 相似文献
