The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) z-axis accelerometer has obtained over 200 vertical structures of thermospheric density, temperature, and pressure, ranging from 110 to 170 kilometers, compared to only three previous such vertical structures. In November 1997, a regional dust storm in the Southern Hemisphere triggered an unexpectedly large thermospheric response at mid-northern latitudes, increasing the altitude of thermospheric pressure surfaces there by as much as 8 kilometers and indicating a strong global thermospheric response to a regional dust storm. Throughout the MGS mission, thermospheric density bulges have been detected on opposite sides of the planet near 90 degreesE and 90 degreesW, in the vicinity of maximum terrain heights. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of GnRH, progestagen and prostaglandin F2α on estrus synchronization in sheep and goats. Sixty Awassi ewes and 53 Damascus does were used in the study. The experiment started at the beginning of the breeding season (June/July). The same treatments were applied to sheep and goats as follows: no treatment (CON), 14‐day progestagen sponges and 600 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (S), gonadotropin releasing hormone followed 5 days later by prostaglandin F2α (GP) and gonadotropin releasing hormone, progestagen sponges for 5 days and prostaglandin F2α on the day of sponge removal (GSP). None of the ewes in the S group lambed from mating during the induced cycle. A greater lambing rate (p < 0.05) was observed in the GSP group compared with the CON and S groups while the GP group was intermediate. The number of lambs born per lambed ewe was similar among the CON, GP and GSP groups. However, the number of lambs per exposed ewe was greater (p < 0.05) in the GSP than the remaining groups. The induced cycle kidding rate was 77% for all treatments combined. Similar kidding rate were observed among treatments. The numbers of kids born per kidded and exposed doe from mating during the induced estrus were also similar among treatments. Greater numbers of multiple births were observed in the GP and GSP than in the S group. In conclusion, a combination of GnRH, progestagen sponges and PGF2α can be effective in synchronizing estrus and improving fecundity in sheep and goats. Although the use of GnRH–PGF2α was effective, the addition of progestagen sponges at the time of GnRH administration appeared to improve reproductive parameters. 相似文献

The formation of vitisin A, an anthocyanin formed naturally in small quantities in maturing port wines, was studied in model wine solutions at several storage temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 32 degrees C). Vitisin A was formed through the interaction between malvidin 3-glucoside and pyruvic acid, Acylated forms of vitisin A, having the 6-position of the sugar acylated with acetic acid (3-acetylvitisin A) and p-coumaric acid (3-p-coumarylvitisin A), were also formed through the interaction between pyruvic acid and malvidin 3-acetylglucoside and malvidin 3-p-coumarylglucoside, respectively. A maximum degradation of the anthocyanins was obtained at higher temperatures, and it followed a first-order kinetics both with and without pyruvic acid in the solution. Whereas at low temperatures (10 and 15 degrees C) the presence of pyruvic acid accelerated the kinetic reaction, at higher temperatures (20 and 32 degrees C) it decreased it. The activation energy values for the degradation of the three anthocyanins in model solutions without and with pyruvic acid were not significantly different from each other. At low temperatures the highest concentrations of vitisin A compounds were obtained. All solutions showed a decrease in L value, indicating that all solutions became darker. This change increased with increasing temperature. All model solutions increased in the hue angle, indicating that the solutions changed from a bluish-red to an orange-red or even brownish-red color. Samples without pyruvic acid remained lighter and became browner than those with pyruvic acid. A good correlation between the amount of vitisin A in the solution and hue angle was found, indicating that vitisin A may contribute the orange-red of solutions, compared to the browner control. 相似文献

For economic and environmental reasons, and for biomass production, appropriate concepts and diagnostic systems based on relevant processes are required to assess the phosphorus (P) supply capacity of the soils in the long term and to adapt P fertilization accordingly in forests. The amount of available phosphate ions (iP) can be quantified using an isotopic dilution procedure. However, this method is difficult to apply since it requires the use of radioactivity (32P or 33P). Flexor enthesopathy is a recently recognized elbow disorder in dogs and considered to be an important differential diagnosis for elbow lameness. Primary and concomitant forms of the disease have been previously described and treatments differ for the two forms. The goal of this prospective study was to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings for dogs with primary flexor enthesopathy (n = 17), concomitant flexor enthesopathy (n = 23), elbow dysplasia alone (n = 13), and normal elbows (n = 7). Each elbow joint underwent MRI using the same low‐field scanner. Sequences included transverse and sagittal T1‐weighted (before and after IV contrast), transverse and sagittal T2‐weighted, and dorsal STIR. For each elbow, MRI lesions were recorded based on a consensus of two observers unaware of group status. Magnetic resonance imaging lesions involving flexor tendons were found in 100% of clinically affected joints with primary flexor enthesopathy and 96% of clinically affected joints with concomitant flexor enthesopathy. Thickened flexor muscles were the most common lesions, followed by hyperintense tendon signal and contrast enhancement. Irregular, thickened medial humeral epicondyle, edema, and calcified body lesions were less frequently observed. Magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of flexor enthesopathy were not found in normal joints or those affected by elbow dysplasia alone. No significant differences in frequencies and details of individual MRI characteristics were found between primary and concomitant flexor enthesopathy groups. Findings indicated that MRI is a sensitive technique for detection of flexor enthesopathy lesions in dogs, however, MRI characteristics do not allow differentiation of primary versus concomitant forms of the disease. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. have been studied for decades for their plant growth-promoting effects through effective suppression of soilborne plant diseases. The modes of action that play a role in disease suppression by these bacteria include siderophore-mediated competition for iron, antibiosis, production of lytic enzymes, and induced systemic resistance (ISR). The involvement of ISR is typically studied in systems in which the Pseudomonas bacteria and the pathogen are inoculated and remain spatially separated on the plant, e.g., the bacteria on the root and the pathogen on the leaf, or by use of split root systems. Since no direct interactions are possible between the two populations, suppression of disease development has to be plant-mediated. Because carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is rising, increases in plant biomass and productivity of terrestrial ecosystems are expected. However, phosphorus (P) unavailability may disable any potential enhanced growth of plants in forest ecosystems. In response to P scarcity under elevated CO2, trees may mine deeper the soil to take up more nutrients. In this scope, the ability of deep horizons of forest soils to supply available P to the trees has to be evaluated. The main objective of the present study was to quantify the relative contribution of topsoil horizons and deep horizons to P availability through processes governed by the activity of soil micro-organisms. Since soil properties vary with soil depth, one can therefore assume that the role of microbial processes governing P availability differs between soil layers. More specifically, our initial hypothesis was that deeper soil horizons could substantially contribute to total plant available P in forested ecosystems and that such contribution of deep horizons differs among sites (due to contrasting soil properties). To test this hypothesis, we quantified microbial P and mineralization of P in ‘dead’ soil organic matter to a depth of 120 cm in forest soils contrasting in soil organic matter, soil moisture and aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) oxides. We also quantified microbiological activity and acid phosphomonoesterase activity. Results showed that the role of microbial processes generally decreases with increasing soil depth. However, the relative contribution of surface (litter and 0–30 cm) and deep (30–120 cm) soil layers to the stocks of available P through microbial processes (51–62 kg P ha?1) are affected by several soil properties, and the contribution of deep soil layers to these stocks vary between sites (from 29 to 59%). This shows that subsoils should be taken into account when studying the microbial processes governing P availability in forest ecosystems. For the studied soils, microbial P and mineralization of P in ‘dead’ soil organic matter particularly depended on soil organic matter content, soil moisture and, to a minor extent, Al oxides. High Al oxide contents in some sites or in deep soil layers probably result in the stabilization of soil organic compounds thus reducing microbiological activity and mineralization rates. The mineralization process in the litter also appeared to be P-limited and depended on the C:P ratio of soil organic matter. For migratory birds, early arrival and physical condition on the breeding grounds are important determinants of reproductive success and fitness. Differences in arrival times often exceed a month, and later arriving individuals are often in poorer condition. Habitat-specific isotopic signatures indicate that the quality of winter habitats occupied by American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) determines their physical condition and spring departure dates, which in turn result in variable arrival schedules and condition on temperate breeding grounds. These findings link events in tropical winter grounds with those in temperate breeding areas for a migratory songbird and provide evidence that winter habitats may be limiting. 相似文献

Ethylene-insensitive tobacco shows differentially altered susceptibility to different pathogens 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT Transgenic tobacco plants (Tetr) expressing the mutant etr1-1 gene from Arabidopsis thaliana are insensitive to ethylene and develop symptoms of wilting and stem rot when grown in nonautoclaved soil. Several isolates of Fusarium, Thielaviopsis, and Pythium were recovered from stems of diseased Tetr plants. Inoculation with each of these isolates of 6-week-old plants growing in autoclaved soil caused disease in Tetr plants but not in nontransformed plants. Also, when 2-week-old seedlings were used, nontransformed tobacco appeared nonsusceptible to the Fusarium isolates, whereas Tetr seedlings did develop disease. Tetr seedlings were not susceptible to several nonhost Fusarium isolates. In contrast to results with Fusarium isolates, inoculation of 2-week-old seedlings with a Thielaviopsis isolate resulted in equal symptom development of nontransformed and Tetr tobacco. In order to explore the potential range of pathogens to which Tetr tobacco plants display enhanced susceptibility, the pathogenicity of several root and leaf pathogens was tested. Tetr plants were more susceptible to the necrotrophic fungi Botrytis cinerea and Cercospora nicotianae and the bacterium Erwinia carotovora, but only marginally more to the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum. In contrast, the biotrophic fungus Oidium neolycopersici, the oomycete Peronospora tabacina, and Tobacco mosaic virus caused similar or less severe symptoms on Tetr plants than on nontransformed plants. Total peroxidase activity of Tetr plants was lower than that of nontransformed plants, suggesting a role for peroxidases in resistance against necrotrophic microorganisms. A comparable range of pathogens was examined on Arabidopsis and its ethylene-insensitive mutants etr1-1 and ein2-1. With the exception of one Fusarium isolate, ethylene insensitivity increased susceptibility of Arabidopsis plants to a similar spectrum of necrotizing pathogens as in tobacco. Thus, both ethylene-insensitive tobacco and Arabidopsis plants appear to be impaired in their resistance to necrotrophic pathogens. 相似文献
