The purpose of this study was to evaluate response rates, 1st remission duration (FRD), and toxicity in dogs with previously untreated lymphoma receiving an identical CHOP-based combination chemotherapy protocol with or without L-asparaginase (LASP). One hundred fifteen dogs with lymphoma were scheduled to receive an identical CHOP-based chemotherapy protocol that included L-ASP. However, because of manufacturer-imposed random rationing, 31 dogs did not receive L-ASP as scheduled. The 2 treatment groups were statistically similar with respect to signalment and presence of historical negative prognostic factors. No difference was observed in the median FRD whether dogs did or did not receive L-ASP (206 versus 217 days, respectively; P = .67). No difference was observed in the median overall survival times between dogs receiving or not receiving L-ASP (310 versus 308 days, respectively; P = .84). No statistical difference was observed with respect to overall response rate between dogs that did or did not receive L-ASP (89.3% versus 87.1%, respectively; P = .75). Complete response rates between the groups also were no different (83.3% and 77.4% for L-ASP and non-L-ASP groups, respectively; P = .59). Prevalence of toxicity (neutropenia, diarrhea, or vomiting) and treatment delays (P = .80) also were similar between groups. The results of this study suggest that exclusion of L-ASP in this multidrug protocol does not significantly impact outcome. Therefore, it may be more appropriate to reserve the use of L-ASP for treating relapse in dogs with lymphoma that have failed induction therapy. 相似文献

The activins and inhibins are members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily and, along with follistatin, a high affinity binding protein of activin, form a group of interrelated factors originally isolated for their role in regulating the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Knowledge of their function, particularly that of activin, has expanded since being originally isolated, such that they are now regarded as important paracrine regulators in many cellular systems. This review summarizes the biology of these proteins as has been established in the large domestic animals. While the majority of data relate to the pituitary, ovary, uterus/placenta and testis, consideration is also given to emerging roles in inflammatory processes and in non-reproductive tissues or systems. 相似文献

Ten samples of plant vegetation and 10 samples of fresh excrement were taken from the same pasture area. The excrement were collected from 10 2-year-old Old Kladruber horses that received the pasture vegetation daily. The apparent digestibility of nitrogen and amino acids in pasture vegetation was determined by using the acid-insoluble ash marker method. In comparison with excrement, the pasture vegetation contained higher levels of Ser, Ala, Leu, and His and higher levels of Pro (P ≤ .01), Met (P ≤ .01), and Arg (P ≤ .05). The mean level of Ile in pasture vegetation was lower than in excrement (P ≤ .05). The apparent digestibility of amino acids from pasture vegetation was high for Pro and Met (86.75 and 89.39%), moderate for Ser, Ala, Leu, His, and Arg (68.61%-76%), and low for Asp, Thr, Glu, Gly, Val, Leu, Tyr, Phe, and Lys (56.15%-66.03%). The digestibility of lysine and Ile was relatively low (56.39% and 56.15%, respectively). The total content of nitrogen per dry matter was 10.98 ± 2.46 g/kg for pasture vegetation and 12.12 ± 2.38 g/kg for excrement, whereas the content of protein nitrogen was 7.20 ± 0.25 g/kg and 6.89 ± 0.21 g/kg of dry matter in pasture vegetation and excrement, respectively. This means that only 65.55% and 56.90% of N is bound in proteins in pasture vegetation and excrement, respectively. Two beef steers accidentally injected into a branch of the auricular artery with an oil-based formulation of ceftiofur died within 5 minutes of injection. Notable pathologic findings included distention and obstruction of cerebral and cerebellar arteries by a whitish tan material and hemorrhages within meningeal spaces, the choroid plexus, cerebrum, and cerebellum. OBJECTIVE: To quantify factors influencing anesthetic concentration when an innovative anesthetic delivery device (vapor wand) was used with enclosed chambers. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized study. METHODS: Two experimental chambers (57.4 and 171 L) were constructed. Anesthetic volumes necessary to reach a target concentration of 3% or 5% isoflurane with complete vaporization were calculated for each chamber. After centering the distal end of the vapor wand and multi-orifice sampler, each chamber was sealed. Air (450 mL) was cycled through the vapor wand in a to-and-fro fashion with an electric, modified air pump at either 20 or 40 cycles minute(-1). Samples taken at 30-second intervals were analyzed for isoflurane concentration. Times to reach 2.8% isoflurane concentration were compared for eight treatment combinations replicated three times. Curves were constructed to display the rate of rise to endpoint concentration. Analysis of variance was applied to the data. RESULTS: Chamber size, pump stroke rate, and target isoflurane concentration all affected time to reach 2.8%, and their three-way interaction was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Generally time to 2.8% was less with small chambers, more rapid pumping and a target concentration of 5%. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When a wild or aggressive animal is presented for clinical veterinary care, introduction of a vapor wand into its cage offers a safer, more convenient, and less stressful alternative for anesthesia than transfer to an induction chamber. By quantifying factors affecting the rate of rise of anesthetic concentration with its use in experimental chambers, this study should promote greater safety and predictability when used clinically. This information will be useful when anesthetic induction needs to be hastened or delayed depending on the responses of the patient and the clinical judgment of the anesthetist. 相似文献

Babesia bovis and its bovine host interact in many ways, resulting in a range of disease and infection phenotypes. Host responses to the parasite elicit or select for a variety of responses on the part of the parasite, the full range of which is not yet known. One well-established phenomenon, thought to aid parasite survival by evasion of host adaptive immune responses, is the sequential expansion of antigenically variant populations during an infection, a phenomenon referred to as "antigenic variation". Antigenic variation in B. bovis, like that in the human malarial parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is intimately linked to a second survival mechanism, cytoadhesion. In cytoadhesion, mature parasite-containing erythrocytes bind to the capillary and post-capillary venous endothelium through parasite-derived ligands. The reliance of these parasites on both functions, and on their linkage, may provide opportunities to develop anti-babesial and, perhaps, anti-malarial protection strategies. The development of inhibitors of DNA metabolism in B. bovis may be used to abrogate the process of antigenic variation, whereas small molecular mimics may provide the means to vaccinate against a wide range of variants or to prevent the surface export of variant antigen ligands. In this article, aspects of antigenic variation and cytoadhesion in bovine babesiosis are explored, with a discussion of opportunities for prophylactic or therapeutic intervention in these intertwined processes. 相似文献

In 1910, H. B. Fantham described the life cycle of a coccidian parasite in birds. Fantham was a parasitologist at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom working for an enquiry into diseases affecting the red grouse. Despite the growing importance of the poultry industry and the realization that coccidiosis was an important disease of the fowl, little further work was carried out in the United Kingdom until coccidiosis research was initiated at the Veterinary Laboratory, Weybridge almost 30 yr later. Further progress depended upon research carried out at academic and agricultural institutions in the United States. E. E. Tyzzer at Harvard University provided the solid foundation upon which our present knowledge of coccidiosis, and the species of Eimeria involved in the disease, is based. Agricultural experiment stations (AESs) throughout the nation played an important role in communicating advances to the agricultural community. W. T. Johnson at Western Washington and, subsequently, Oregon AES made significant contributions to our understanding of the disease, as did C. A. Herrick and coworkers at Wisconsin AES, J. P. Single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG), a technique used to investigate neuromuscular transmission, has been described previously in the pelvic limb of dogs. Because preferential involvement of isolated muscle groups can occur in disorders of neuromuscular transmission, SFEMG was done in the peroneus longus (PL), extensor carpi radialis (ECR), and orbicularis oculi (OO) muscles of 10 adult, clinically normal dogs. Jitter was calculated as the mean absolute value of the consecutive differences in latency of 50 single muscle fiber action potentials after stimulation of intramuscular nerve bundles at the level of the motor point in at least 20 muscle fibers per muscle. Bilateral recordings were performed in 3 dogs. Mean jitter values were determined for each muscle, and differences among muscle groups and among dogs were compared. The upper limits of mean consecutive difference (mean plus 3 standard deviations) for the PL, ECR, and OO muscles were 21.94, 22.53, and 23.39 micros, respectively, and the upper limit of mean consecutive difference for individual muscle fibers in the respective fiber pools was 28.62, 36.39, and 35.68 micros. Jitter values for the ECR and OO were significantly higher than the jitter value for the PL muscle (P < .05). Significant differences among muscles or dogs or between sides were not observed for the ECR. Significant differences among dogs were observed for OO jitter values and were attributed to extremely low jitter values in 1 dog. Significant differences were demonstrated between sides for the PL and were attributed to small sample size. Results of this study provide normative data that can be used in the application of the stimulated SFEMG technique to dogs with suspected disorders of neuromuscular transmission. 相似文献
