An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect antigen-specific secretory IgA antibody in bovine vaginal mucus after abortion due to Campylobacter fetus subsp venerealis. Abortions were diagnosed by isolating the organism from 8 foetuses and/or foetal membranes and by histopathology. Vaginal mucus was collected from 7 cows shortly after abortion. All showed a high level of IgA antibody in their vaginal mucus when they were compared with an uninfected control group. The new ELISA is simple and practical and provides a useful tool for diagnosis of bovine venereal campylobacteriosis.  相似文献

In a study of 763 adult patients we found serologic evidence of infection (a fourfold increase in antibodies) with Chlamydia trachomatis in 20.5 percent of the patients and with Mycoplasma pneumoniae in 10.6 percent, but with group A streptococcus (by culture) in only 9.1 percent. Pharyngitis, the most common problem for which patients seek medical care in the United States, may be caused by nonviral, potentially treatable organisms more often than had been suspected.  相似文献

The effect of commonly used sedatives on gastrointestinal motility and transit time in cats was evaluated using barium sulfate in gastrointestinal contrast studies. Control studies were performed in nonsedated animals, and the results were compared with those obtained from each of five sedation studies (ANOVA; p < 0.05). The ketamine/acepromazine transit time (18 minutes) was shortened significantly compared with the control group (42 minutes), and both ketamine/acepromazine and ketamine alone resulted in significant increase in the number of gastric contractions. The level of sedation was evaluated subjectively and compared with the transit times to determine a chemical restraint method for potential clinical use that would have the least effect on transit time and motility yet provide adequate sedation. When sedation is necessary and motility is not a primary concern, the ketamine/acepromazine combination if recommended. If a gastrointestinal motility problem is suspected, the ketamine/valium combination should be used.  相似文献

Thoracic conformation, age, amount of body fat, and stage of respiration and cardiac contraction affect the cardiac silhouette. Deep-chested dogs have an upright, narrow cardiac silhouette about 2 1/2 intercostal spaces wide, while barrel-chested dogs have a round, wide silhouette about 3 1/2 intercostal spaces wide. On LAT films the vessels to a lung lobe should be of equal size and 0.25-1.2 times the diameter of the upper third of the 4th rib at the 4th intercostal space. On DV projections, vessels to the caudal lung lobe should be no larger than the diameter of the 9th rib. Signs of right ventricular enlargement include loss of the cranial waist, increased width of the cardiac silhouette, increased sternal contact of the heart, and an elevated cardiac apex. Signs of left ventricular enlargement include an elevated carina, loss of the caudal waist, and a more perpendicular caudal cardiac border. Signs of left atrial enlargement include separation of mainstem bronchi, compression of the bronchus to the left caudal lung lobe, and an increased distance from the carina to the dorsal border of the caudal vena cava. Enlargement of the aorta and main pulmonary artery segment on a LAT view appears as a soft tissue density obscuring the cranial waist. Pulmonary vascular fields are usually hypervascular in patent ductus arteriosus and interventricular septal defects, normal in uncomplicated aortic or pulmonic stenosis, and hypovascular in tetralogy of Fallot.  相似文献

An 8-year-old domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a several day history of anorexia and vomiting. Abdominal distention was noted on physical examination and diagnostics including abdominal radiographs and abdominal ultrasound demonstrated the presence of free fluid in the peritoneal cavity. Septic peritonitis was diagnosed on cytologic evaluation of the peritoneal fluid. The cat was taken to surgery and a foreign body composed of plant material was found embedded within the spleen. A splenectomy was performed and both open and active peritoneal drainages were used to successfully treat this case.  相似文献

A new liquid chromatographic method for determination of ampicillin in canine and equine serum has been developed. The serum sample (500 microL) is vortex-mixed with 20% ethanol (500 microL) and filtered using a 30,000 molecular weight cutoff microseparation tube to separate high molecular weight solutes following low-speed centrifugation. Ampicillin is then separated from other serum components by reverse phase ion-pair liquid chromatography (LC). The ultraviolet (UV) absorbance of the column effluent is monitored at 230 nm. Recoveries of ampicillin from canine serum spiked at concentrations of 10, 40, and 60 micrograms/mL were 93.1, 100.9, and 87.8%, respectively, with coefficients of variation (CVs) of 2.91, 3.08, and 4.08%, respectively. Recoveries of ampicillin from equine serum spiked at the same concentrations were 91.6, 90.1, and 88.7%, respectively, with CVs of 3.03, 2.61, and 3.35%, respectively. The limit of detection for ampicillin by this method is less than 0.5 micrograms/mL serum.  相似文献

A sensitive liquid chromatographic method was developed for determining oxacillin, cloxacillin, and dicloxacillin (simultaneously), and penicillin G, amoxicillin, carbenicillin, and ticarcillin in canine and/or equine serum. The method involves filtering diluted serum through a 30,000 molecular weight cut-off filter and separating penicillins from other serum components by ion-pair liquid chromatography using a reverse-phase column eluted with acetonitrile-water solutions. The ultraviolet absorbance of the column effluent was monitored at 230 nm. Recoveries of oxacillin, cloxacillin, dicloxacillin, and penicillin G (spiked at 2.5 micrograms/mL), amoxicillin (spiked at 5 micrograms/mL), and carbenicillin and ticarcillin (spiked at 10 micrograms/mL) from canine and equine serums ranged from 78.3 to 104.4% with coefficients of variation ranging from 3.35 to 5.95%. The limit of detection for these penicillins was 0.02-0.05 microgram/mL.  相似文献

Acetaminophen Toxicosis In 17 Cats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Seventeen cases of acetamninophen intoxication in cats were identified over a 12-year period. Information obtained from the medical records included the signalment, amount acetaminophen ingested, time from ingestion until treatment was initiated, clinical signs, physical examination, clinical pathology, treatment and outcome. The most common cause intoxication was owner administration. In cats that died or were euthanized the dose administered ranged from 10mg/kg to 17Omg/kg, while in cats that survived the dosage ranged from 10mg/kg to 400mg/kg. The most common clinical signs were depression, increased respiratory rate, respiratory distress, pale/muddy mucous membranes, and hypothermia. Twelve cats survived. Ten of these cats had treatment initiated within 14 hours after ingestion. One cat that survived had treatment initiated 24 hours after ingestion, and a second cat that survived had treatment initiated 48 hours after ingestion. Time between ingestion and initiation treatment may be as important if not more important than the actual dosage acetaminophen administered.  相似文献

Preoperative knowledge of the renal vascular anatomy is important for selection of the appropriate feline renal donor. Intravenous urograms (IVUs) have been performed routinely to screen potential donors at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (VHUP), but the vascular phase views lack sufficient detail of the renal vascular anatomy. Computed tomography angiography (CTA), which requires a helical computed tomography (CT) scanner, has been found to provide superior renal vascular anatomic information of prospective human renal donors. The specific aims of this study were as follows: 1) develop the CTA technique for the feline patient; and 2) obtain preliminary information on feline renal vessel anatomy in potential renal donors. Ten healthy, potential feline renal donors were anesthetized and imaged using a third-generation helical CT scanner. The time delay between i.v. contrast medium injection and image acquisition, and other parameters of slice collimation, slice interval, pitch, exposure settings, and reconstruction algorithms were varied to maximize contrast medium opacification of the renal vascular anatomy. Optimal CTA acquisition parameters were determined to be: 1) 10-sec delay post-i.v. bolus of iodinated contrast medium; 2) two serially acquired (corresponding to arterial and venous phases) helical scans through the renal vasculature; 3) pitch of 2 (4 mm/sec patient translation, 2 mm slice collimation); and 4) 120-kVp, 160-mA, and 1-sec exposure settings. Retrospective reconstructed CTA transverse images obtained at a 2-mm slice width and a 1-mm slice interval in combination with two-dimensional reformatted images and three-dimensional reconstructed images were qualitatively evaluated for vascular anatomy; vascular anatomy was confirmed at surgery. Four cats had single renal arteries and veins bilaterally; four cats had double renal veins. One cat had a small accessory artery supplying the caudal pole of the left kidney. One cat had a left renal artery originating from the aorta at a 90 degrees angle with the cranial mesenteric artery. CTA of the feline renal vascular anatomy is feasible, and reconstruction techniques provide excellent anatomic vascular detail. CTA is now used routinely at VHUP to screen all potential feline renal donors.  相似文献
