The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the ability of charcoal-extracted bovine follicular fluid (bFF) to suppress endogenous follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) at various stages of the estrous cycle and 2) the effects of suppression of FSH on luteal function and lengths of the current and subsequent estrous cycles. Twenty-six mature ewes were assigned randomly to receive 5 ml of either bFF or saline, subcutaneously, at 8-h intervals on d 1 through 5 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 3), d 6 through 10 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 3) or d 11 through 15 (bFF n = 6; saline n = 2) of the estrous cycle (d 0 = estrus). Blood was collected daily beginning at estrus and continued until the third estrus (two estrous cycles) or 40 d; more frequent samples were collected 2 h prior to initiation of treatment (0600), hourly for the first 8 h of treatment, then every 4 h until 0800 on the first day after treatment, and finally at 1600 and 2400 on that day. Plasma concentrations of FSH were lower (P less than .001) in bFF-treated than in saline-treated ewes. Treatment with bFF reduced (P less than .05) plasma concentrations of progesterone during the current but not during the subsequent estrous cycle. Treatment with bFF did not affect plasma concentrations of estradiol-17 beta. Administration of bFF on d 11 through 15 of the estrous cycle lengthened the interval from the decline in progesterone to estrus and the inter-estrous interval by approximately 3 and 4 d, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Cervical anatomy in ewes usually prevents nonsurgical, intrauterine AI and transcervical embryo transfer (ET), which limits their commercial use in sheep. This study was conducted to determine whether oxytocin would dilate the cervix in ewes and permit passage of a stainless steel rod into the uterus. In Exp. 1, at 44 and 52 h after removal of progestogenated pessaries, ewes were injected i.v. with 0 (saline), 200, 400, or 600 USP units of oxytocin. Immediately before and after treatments, stainless steel rods were used to evaluate cervical dilation and determine whether the uterus could be entered. A rod could not be passed through the cervix and into the uterus in any of the saline-treated ewes. All doses of oxytocin given at 44 and 52 h after pessary removal dilated the cervix and permitted easy passage of a rod into the uterus. At both 44 and 52 h, a stainless steel rod was passed into the uterus in 33 of 43 (77%) of the oxytocin-treated ewes. In 93% (40/43) of these ewes, a rod could be passed into the uterus during either the 44-h or during the 52-h attempt. In Exp. 2, on d 9 after pessary removal, ewes were injected i.v. with oxytocin (400 USP units) at 6 or 12 h after i.v. estradiol-17 beta (0, 100, or 200 micrograms). Cervical dilation was evaluated as in Exp. 1. To determine time of occurrence of follicular changes that may be associated with the length of the subsequent luteal phase, follicles were collected at different times before ovulation from cows expected to have corpora lutea of short (control) or normal (norgestomet-treated) life span. Beginning on d 20 to 23 postpartum (d 0 of study), 34 crossbred beef cows received either a 6-mg implant of norgestomet for 9 d or served as untreated controls. Ovaries were removed from norgestomet-treated cows on d 6 (N6; n = 9), d 8 (N8; n = 8), or the day after implant removal (N10; n = 8). Control cows were ovariectomized on d 6 (C6; n = 4) or d 10 (C10; n = 5). The largest and second largest follicles greater than 8 mm (F1 and F2, respectively) were dissected from the ovaries. Granulosal and thecal layers and follicular fluid were separated and assayed for estradiol-17 beta, progesterone, androstenedione, and testosterone. Cyclic 3'5'adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) was determined in thecal and granulosal tissue. Diameters of the F1 (14.6 +/- .4 mm) and F2 (10.6 +/- .4 mm) did not differ due to treatment. A greater proportion (P less than .05) of the F1 (20/33) than of the F2 (4/27) had estradiol:progesterone ratios of greater than 1 in follicular fluid. One-hundred-ninety-two weanling pigs from two separate trials, (initial weight 6.0 and 5.6 kg) and 400 growing-finishing pigs (initial weight 17 kg) were fed normal and high lysine corn diets containing four levels of lysine in a 2 X 4 factorial arrangement. Crossbred (Large White X Landrace X Duroc) pigs were used in all experiments. The objectives of the experiments were to (1) compare normal and high lysine corn when fed at different lysine levels, (2) determine the lysine requirements for the three stages of growth and (3) evaluate the effect of protein level on the lysine requirement. All diets were balanced on a lysine basis. The results indicated that both weanling and growing-finishing pig performance and final carcass composition were similar for pigs fed normal or high lysine corn diets balanced on a lysine basis. Weanling pigs from 5 to 14 kg required at least 1.10% lysine. Based on changes in body weight gain and feed efficiency, the lysine requirement of growing pigs (17 to 54 kg) was .70%, and that of finishing pigs (54 to 101 kg) was .50%. However, based on lean tissue growth rate (as reflected by longissimus muscle area and percentage of lean in the carcass) the requirement was at least .75% during the growing stage and .60% during the finishing stage. The reduced protein level (2% lower) of the high lysine corn diets did not reduce the lysine required by pigs compared with those fed normal corn.  相似文献

A 4.5-year-old, neutered male ferret with a history of recurrent adenocarcinoma in the preputial region was given 2 radiation treatment courses designed to control the rapidly growing neoplasm. The tumor regressed completely after the first 3.5-week course of therapy. The ferret remained clinically disease-free for 4 months, at which time small masses were noticed in the inguinal area and the original tumor site. A second course of therapy was administered, which again resulted in complete clinical regression of the neoplasm. However, the duration of remission was brief. Local recurrence and abdominal metastasis were observed within 2 months of the completion of therapy.  相似文献

Forty-five cases of renal dysplasia in dogs are examined. Microscopic lesions of dysplasia include asynchronous differentiation of nephrons, persistent mesenchyme, persistent metanephric ducts, atypical tubular epithelium, and dysontogenic metaplasia. These may be distinguished from secondary lesions including compensatory hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the nephron and a variety of degenerative and inflammatory lesions. Although morphological features of renal dysplasia in dogs differ somewhat from those in man, microscopic criteria used in the diagnosis of human dysplasia may be useful when applied to the dog.  相似文献

Two 4-wk trials (preliminary study) and three 5-wk trials (major study) were conducted to determine the effects of adding Yucca schidigera extract or anhydrous calcium chloride to nursery diets on the growth performance of nursery pigs and aerial ammonia concentration. The pigs were weaned between 13 and 15 d of age and had an initial BW of 3 to 6 kg. In each trial, pigs were allotted to three identical pig nursery rooms that were environmentally regulated. There were three diets (one diet per room): 1) control, containing 23% CP; 2) control plus 125 ppm of Yucca schidigera extract; and 3) control plus 1.95% anhydrous calcium chloride. Growth performance was recorded weekly. Aerial ammonia concentration was measured daily using aspiration detector tubes and during the last week of each trial using diffusion tubes. Manure samples were collected twice a week during the experimental period to determine ammonia and N concentrations and pH. Plasma urea concentration was determined in blood samples collected from the pigs at the end of each trial. Data were analyzed using split-plot and Latin square designs for the preliminary and major studies, respectively. Feed intake was similar among pigs fed all three diets. There were no differences in ADG and ADG/ADFI (G/F) between pigs fed the control diet and pigs fed the yucca extract diet (P > or = 0.41). In all trials, pigs fed the calcium chloride diet had lower ADG and G/F than pigs fed the other two diets (P < 0.05). In the preliminary study, aerial ammonia tended to be greater in the rooms in which pigs were fed the control diet than in the rooms with pigs fed the yucca extract diet (P = 0.08) and the calcium chloride diet (P = 0.11). In the major study, aerial ammonia increased weekly (diet x week; P < 0.001) in all rooms. In the 4th wk, ammonia concentrations were greater (P < 0.001) in the rooms in which pigs were fed the control diet than in the rooms in which the other two diets were fed. Dietary treatment had no effect on plasma urea concentration (P > or = 0.10), manure ammonia and N concentrations (P > or = 0.50), and manure pH (P > or = 0.78). Although aerial ammonia concentrations were relatively low, the addition of Yucca schidigera extract or calcium chloride to the diet of nursery pigs reduced ammonia concentrations in the nursery rooms.  相似文献

Clinical signs consistent with hepatic lipidosis occurred in six obese adult laboratory cats, housed in a group cage, 6 to 7 weeks after changing their diet from a commercial to a purified diet. The affected cats lost 30 to 40% of their body weight in this time period. This rate of weight loss is compatible with little or no food intake. For treatment, 5 cats were tube-fed three or four times daily with a high-fat liquid diet supplemented with L-citrulline and choline. All cats tolerated the diet, which contained 35% protein on an energy basis. Substantial voluntary food intake resumed 12 to 16 days after initiating treatment. The sixth cat was euthanatized. These observations suggest that 6 to 7 weeks of anorexia, associated with 30 to 40% weight loss, can induce hepatic lipidosis in obese but otherwise healthy cats, and confirm that with appropriate management the prognosis for cats with hepatic lipidosis is favorable.  相似文献

Hematologic and radiographic findings in 15 domestic cats inoculated with 25, 100, or 200 to 400 infective larvae of Dirofilaria immitis and in 5 uninoculated cats were compared. Eosinophilia and leukocytosis developed 3 to 5 months after inoculation; packed cell volume and hemoglobin values were similar for inoculated cats and controls. Changes detected in radiographs of inoculated cats were: (1) increased visualization of the pulmonary arteries; (2) right-side cardiac enlargement; and (3) diffuse to focal areas of density in the pulmonary parenchyma. At least one of these lesions was visible radiographically by 3 to 7 months after inoculation in all 15 cats. The severity of changes was not directly proportional to the number of infective larvae inoculated, adult worm burden, or age of cat. However, male cats had more severe cardiopulmonary lesions than did females, and cats that had microfilaremia during the course of infection had more severe pulmonary lesions, as determined radiographically. Parenchymal densities decreased in 8 of the 15 inoculated cats 6 to 14 months after inoculation. Cardiac enlargement was detected radiographically in 10 of the inoculated cats. Enlargement of the pulmonary arteries was the most consistent sign of D immitis infection; it developed and persisted in 12 cats found to be infected at necropsy.  相似文献
