Summary A field study was undertaken to examine the effects of various management strategies on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) performance and N cycling in an intensively cropped soil. Microplots receiving 100 kg N ha–1 as15NH4 + 15NO3 at sowing, tillering or stem elongation were compared with unfertilized microplots. Stubble from the previous rice crop was either incorporated, burnt without tillage, burnt then tilled or retained on the surface of untilled soil. Wheat grain yield ranged from 1.5 to 5.1 t ha and was closely related to N uptake. Plant accumulation of soil N averaged 36 kg N ha–1 (LSD 5% = 10) on stubble-incorporation plots and 54 kg N ha–1 on stubble-retention plots. Fertilizer N accumulation averaged 18 kg N ha–1 (LSD 51% = 6) on stubble-incorporation plots and 50 kg N ha–1 on stubble-retention plots. Tillage had little effect on burnt plots. Delaying N application from sowing until stem elongation increased average fertilizer N uptake from 26 to 39 kg N ha–1 (LSD 5% = 6), but reduced soil N uptake from 50 to 37 kg N ha (LSD 5% = 10).Immobilization and leaching did not vary greatly between treatments and approximately one-third of the fertilizer was immobilized. Less than 1% of the fertilizer was found below a depth of 300 mm. Incorporating 9 t ha–1 of rice stubble 13 days before wheat sowing reduced net apparent mineralization of native soil N from 37 to 3 kg ha–1 between tillering and maturity. It also increased apparent denitrification of fertilizer N from an average 34 to 53 kg N ha–1 (LSD 5% = 6). N loss occurred over several months, suggesting that denitrification was maintained by continued release of metabolizable carbohydrate from the decaying rice stubble. The results demonstrate that no-till systems increase crop yield and use of both fertilizer and soil N in intensive rice-based rotations.  相似文献

Benzene is known to have toxic effects on the blood and bone marrow, but its impact at levels below the U.S. occupational standard of 1 part per million (ppm) remains uncertain. In a study of 250 workers exposed to benzene, white blood cell and platelet counts were significantly lower than in 140 controls, even for exposure below 1 ppm in air. Progenitor cell colony formation significantly declined with increasing benzene exposure and was more sensitive to the effects of benzene than was the number of mature blood cells. Two genetic variants in key metabolizing enzymes, myeloperoxidase and NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase, influenced susceptibility to benzene hematotoxicity. Thus, hematotoxicity from exposure to benzene occurred at air levels of 1 ppm or less and may be particularly evident among genetically susceptible subpopulations.  相似文献

Campylobacter (C.) is one of the most common food-borne pathogen causing bacterial enteric infections in humans. Consumption of meat and meat products that have been contaminated with Campylobacter are the major source of infection. Pigs are a natural reservoir of Campylobacter spp. with C. coli as the dominant species. Even though some studies focussed on transmission of C. coli in pig herds and the excretion in faeces, little is known about the colonisation and excretion dynamics of C. coli in a complex gut microbiota present in weaned piglets and the translocation to different tissues.  相似文献

Five days after the induction of acute systemic inflammation in greyhounds by intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of Freund's adjuvant, the hepatic concentrations of cytochromes P-450 and b5, the activities of the hepatic microsomal enzymes aniline p-hydroxylase and aminopyrine n-demethylase and the disposition and urinary excretion of phenylbutazone were determined. The mean plasma concentrations of phenylbutazone after intravenous administration were described by the bi-exponential equations: Cp = 144·2e−34·6t + 171·5e−0·104t for five normal greyhounds and Cp = 113·6e−16·13t + 163·1e−0·108t for five febrile greyhounds. The elimination half-lives, total body clearances and apparent volumes of distribution were 6·7 hours, 18·4 ml kg−1 hour−1 and 0·18 litre kg−1, for the normal greyhounds, and 6·4 hours, 19·5 ml kg−1 hour−1 and 0·18 litre kg−1, for the febrile greyhounds. There were no significant differences between the pharmacokinetic parameters describing the distribution and elimination of phenylbutazone, or between the quantities of phenylbutazone, oxyphenbutazone and hydroxyphenylbutazone excreted in the urine. In the febrile greyhounds, there were significant decreases in the hepatic microsomal concentrations of cytochromes P-450 and b5 and in the activities of aniline p-hydroxylase and aminopyrine n-demethylase.  相似文献

In this work, faecal samples were collected from 15 pig farms to determine the Campylobacter prevalences at different times during the rearing period and to visualize the exchange of strains among the pig population by genotyping specific isolates. All isolated strains were identified as C. coli. Whereas no Campylobacter were detectable in the faeces of piglets at the day of birth, the Campylobacter incidence rose within days to 32.8%. After transfer to the nursery unit the prevalence increased to 56.6%. Approximately two-thirds of the pigs remained C. coli shedders in the fattening unit. In contrast to most farms, one farm expressed a very low Campylobacter incidence during the whole rearing period. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was performed on all C. coli isolates of one farm. Clonal strains were identified from the brood sows and their offsprings or neighbouring piglets. After moving to the nursery unit, new genotypes appeared in that pig group but the original C. coli strains largely remained within that group. C. coli genotypes, identified during the fattening period, replaced the previously isolated genotypes. Transportation to the abattoir had no significant influence on the shedding rate of C. coli. The detection rate before transportation was 79.1% and decreased slightly to 78.2% (n=330). Additionally, eleven of 1474 environmental samples from different sources of the pig farms were positive for C. coli. This study demonstrates the importance of pigs as a reservoir for C. coli. Maternal C. coli strains are the primary source of infection but non-related genotypes from different sources appear during the rearing period and these latter strains constitute largely the final C. coli flora.  相似文献
