With increasing CO2 in the atmosphere, there is an urgent need of reliable estimates of biomass and carbon pools in tropical forests, most especially in Africa where there is a serious lack of data. Information on current annual increment (CAI) of carbon biomass resulting from direct field measurements is crucial in this context, to know how forest ecosystems will affect the carbon cycle and also to validate eddy covariance flux measurements. Biomass data were collected from 25 plots of 13 ha spread over the different vegetation types and land uses of a moist evergreen forest of 772,066 ha in Cameroon. With site-specific allometric equations, we estimated biomass and aboveground and belowground carbon pools. We used GIS technology to develop a carbon biomass map of our study area. The CAI was estimated using the growth rates obtained from tree rings analysis. The carbon biomass was on average 264 ± 48 Mg ha−1. This estimate includes aboveground carbon, root carbon and soil organic carbon down to 30 cm depth. This value varied from 231 ± 45 Mg ha−1 of carbon in Agro-Forests to 283 ± 51 Mg ha−1 of carbon in Managed Forests and to 278 ± 56 Mg ha−1 of carbon in National Park. The carbon CAI varied from 2.54 ± 0.65 Mg ha−1 year−1 in Agro-Forests to 2.79 ± 0.72 Mg ha−1 year−1 in Managed Forests and to 2.85 ± 0.72 Mg ha−1 year−1 in National Park. This study provides estimates of biomass, carbon pools and CAI of carbon biomass from a forest landscape in Cameroon as well as an appropriate methodology to estimate these components and the related uncertainty.  相似文献

Soil organic carbon (SOC) fashions soil structure, which is a key factor of soil fertility. Existing SOC content recommendations are based on SOC:clay ratio thresholds of >1:10. However, the corresponding SOC content might be considered hard to reach in clayey soils, whose structure degradation risk is assumed to be high. Here, we analysed the SOC content and soil structure quality of soils under similar cropping practices with clay contents ranging from 16% to 52%. Five undisturbed soil cores (5–10 cm layer) were collected from 96 fields at 58 farms in the Swiss Jura region. We assessed the soil structure quality visually using the CoreVESS method. Gravimetric air content and water content, and bulk density at −100 hPa were also measured, and the soil structure degradation index was calculated. We found that the relationship between SOC and clay content held over the clay content range, suggesting that reaching an acceptable SOC:clay ratio is not limited by large clay contents. This suggests that the 1:10 SOC:clay ratio may remain useful for clayey soils. In contrast to what was expected, it is not more challenging to reach this ratio in clayey soils even if it implies reaching very large SOC contents. SOC content explained the considered physical properties better than clay content. From a soil management point of view, these findings suggest that the soil texture determines a potential SOC content, while the SOC:clay ratio is determined by farming practices regardless of the clay content.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To investigate the perceived adverse effects of a particular batch of ketamine during induction of anaesthesia in sheep and to assess if any adverse effects would make intubation more difficult for the veterinary students.

METHODS: Thirty adult sheep (mean bodyweight 74.5 (SD 9.4) kg) were randomly assigned to one of six groups of five sheep. Sheep in Groups A and B received I/V 0.5 mg/kg diazepam and 10 mg/kg ketamine (Ketamine Injection; Parnell Laboratories NZ Ltd, of the suspect batch); those in Groups C and D received I/V 0.5 mg/kg diazepam and 10 mg/kg ketamine (Ketalar; Hospira NZ Ltd.), and those in Groups E and F received I/V 2 μg/kg medetomidine and 2 mg/kg alphaxalone. In Groups A, C and E, intubation was by an experienced anaesthetist, and in Groups B, D and F intubation was by a veterinary student. Time from injection to successful intubation, the ease of intubation, saturation of haemoglobin with oxygen (SpO2) and partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2) were measured before the sheep were connected to an anaesthetic machine and allowed to breath oxygen. Times to extubation, holding its head up and standing, maximum and minimum heart rates, respiratory rates, maximal end tidal CO2, and the quality of recovery were then recorded.

RESULTS: There were no measurable differences in outcomes between sheep in Groups A and B compared with C and D. Time to intubation was slightly shorter for the experienced anaesthetist than the student, but the difference was not significant. The sheep in Groups E and F took less time to recover than those in Groups A?D (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences between the groups in either the ease of induction or quality of recovery. Most sheep in Groups E and F showed minor excitatory effects, mainly at induction, which did not interfere with induction. Respiratory rates were lower in Groups E and F than Groups A?D (p<0.01), but SpO2 was higher in Groups E and F than A and B (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: The clinical impression that the batch of Parnell ketamine produced unexpected effects was shown to be incorrect. All the combinations produced anaesthesia that allowed intubation by the veterinary student.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: All the drug combinations produced satisfactory anaesthesia in sheep, but the alphaxaloneand medetomidine combination resulted in faster recovery.  相似文献

Based on the analogy between anticancer drugs and insect chemosterliants, both of them acting by virtue of their alkylating capacity, chloromethyl carboxylates (described by Bodor and co-workers as potential anticancer drugs of the soft alkylating agent type) including the chloromethyl ester analogues of the juvenoids hydroprene and methoprene were prepared and tested for chemosterilant and morphogenetic juvenile hormone activity. While the chloromethyl esters of some simple carboxylic acids were inactive in this respect, the juvenoid chloromethyl esters revealed both chemosterilant and morphogenetic activity against Dysdercus cingulatus comparable with that of the known juvenoids hydroprene and methoprene. At the same time their activity against Pieris brassicae showed a sharp drop compared to the ‘parent’ compounds. The results suggest a species-dependent rate of enzymatic hydrolysis of the chloromethyl ester group as a possible reason for their selective action. The aim of this study was to assess the ultrasonographic characteristics of ovulatory follicles in cyclic Western White Face ewes (December) that had received intravaginal sponges containing medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP; 60 mg) for 12 days, with or without an injection of 500 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) at sponge removal. We hypothesized that quantitative echotextural attributes of the follicles in ewes treated only with MAP would differ from those in MAP/eCG-treated ewes, reflecting the increased antral follicular growth and secretory function under eCG influence. Digital images of ovulatory follicles obtained at 0 and 24 h after MAP sponge removal and at 24 h before ovulation in the eCG-treated (five ewes, 13 follicles) and control (six ewes, 9 follicles) animals, were subjected to computerized analyses. The mean diameter of ovulatory follicles increased (p < 0.001) 24 h after eCG treatment. The mean pixel intensity and heterogeneity of the follicular antrum (p < 0.001), as well as mean pixel intensity of the follicular wall and perifollicular ovarian stroma (p < 0.05), were greater in eCG-treated animals compared with control ewes 24 h after sponge removal and at 24 h before ovulation. Mean serum concentrations of oestradiol-17beta tended to increase (p = 0.06) 24 h after eCG treatment and the eCG-treated ewes exceeded (p < 0.05) control animals in progesterone concentrations from days 9-15 after ovulation. Our results support the hypothesis that large antral follicles in eCG-treated ewes exhibit distinctive echotextural characteristics. Follicular image attributes in eCG-treated ewes appear to be indicative of the changes in follicular morphology and secretory activity caused by the administration of the exogenous gonadotropin, which has both FSH- and LH-like activities.  相似文献

Voyager stereoimages of Euboea Montes, Io, indicate that this mountain formed when a large crustal block was uplifted 10.5 kilometers and tilted by approximately 6 degrees. Uplift triggered a massive slope failure on the northwest flank, forming one of the largest debris aprons in the solar system. This slope failure probably involved relatively unconsolidated layers totaling approximately 2 kilometers in thickness, overlying a rigid crust (or lithosphere) at least 11 kilometers thick. Mountain formation on Io may involve localized deep-rooted thrust faulting and block rotation, due to compression at depth induced during vertical recycling of Io's crust.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of stocking density and photoperiod in increasing the reproductive performance of Oreochromis niloticus. In experiment 1, a change in stocking density (from 47.7 to 6.8 kg m?3) was performed, with groups of 48 females moved to single compartments. In experiment 2, 36 females experienced a 6L:18D photoperiod for 21 or 28 days (stocking density: 31.3 kg m?3) before being placed in individual compartments (stocking density of 6.9 kg m?3, 12L:12D photoperiod). The spawning rates in experiment 1 (32.2%) and in experiment 2 (21 days: 65.2%, 28 days: 36.1%) were significantly higher than those in the control (17.7%). On the other hand, hatching and swim‐up fry rates were significantly lower in experiment 2 – 21 days (41.3%, 40.4%) but not in experiment 1 (64.0%, 56.3%) compared with the control (67.0%, 62.3%). The spawning rate in experiment 2 – 21‐day treatment group was the highest, while the number of eggs collected per female was significantly lower than that in the control. In experiments 1 (20.8%) and 2 (21 days: 44.4%, 28 days: 19.4%), the daily spawning rates were the highest 3 days after maintaining females in single compartments. The current experiment demonstrates how specific stocking density changes can be used to induce higher spawning rates in Nile tilapia.  相似文献

Biological control of Rhizoctonia solani with Trichoderma harzianum has been demonstrated in several studies. However, none have reported the dynamics of expression of defence response genes. Here we investigated the expression of these genes in potato roots challenged by R. solani in the presence/absence of T. harzianum Rifai MUCL 29707. Analysis of gene expression revealed an induction of PR1 at 168 h post-inoculation (hpi) and PAL at 96 hpi in the plants inoculated with T. harzianum Rifai MUCL 29707, an induction of PR1, PR2 and PAL at 48 hpi in the plants inoculated with R. solani and an induction of Lox at 24 hpi and PR1, PR2, PAL and GST1 at 72 hpi in the plants inoculated with both organisms. These results suggest that in the presence of T. harzianum Rifai MUCL 29707, the expression of Lox and GST1 genes are primed in potato plantlets infected with R. solani at an early stage of infection. Native plant communities invaded by cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) are at risk of unnatural high intensity fires and conversion to cheatgrass monocultures. Management strategies that reduce cheatgrass abundance may potentially allow native species to expand and minimize further cheatgrass invasion. We tested whether the selective herbicide imazapic is effective in reducing cheatgrass and “releasing” native species in a semiarid grassland and shrub steppe in north-central Oregon. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with two treatments (sprayed with 70 g ai · ha?1 of imazapic and unsprayed) and three replicates of each treatment applied to either 2.5 or 4 ha plots. We repeated this experiment in three different sites dominated by the following native species: 1) bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata [Pursh] A. Löve ssp. spicata) and needle and thread (Hesperostipa comata [Trin. & Rupr.] Barkworth), 2) needle and thread and Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda J. Presl), and 3) big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.). Nested frequency of all plant species in 1-m2 quadrats was collected for 1  yr pretreatment and 4  yr posttreatment. In all three sites, cheatgrass frequencies were significantly lower in sprayed plots than unsprayed plots for 3–4  yr posttreatment (P < 0.1). Other annual plant species were also impacted by imazapic, but the effects were highly variable by species and site. Only two native perennial species, hoary tansyaster (Machaeranthera canescens [Pursh] Gray) and big sagebrush, increased in sprayed plots, and increases occurred only at two sites. These results suggest that a short-term reduction in cheatgrass alone is not an effective strategy for increasing the abundance of most native perennial plant species.  相似文献
