Molecular cloning and tissue distribution of a short form chicken leptin receptor mRNA

In mammals, alternative splicing of the leptin receptor (LEPR) produces several C-terminal truncated isoforms that are believed to play a role in the transport, cellular internalisation and degradation of the hormone leptin. The chicken leptin receptor (chLEPR) is similar to its mammalian counterparts in terms of its intron/exon structure and conserved motifs. However, it is unknown whether the chLEPR also undergoes alternative splicing. To test this, structural analysis of intron 19 of the chLEPR, equivalent to the intron in which alternative splicing occurs in mammals, was combined with 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (3'-RACE) to search for chLEPR splice variants. A 44-amino acid alternative exon 20 was identified that is spliced to generate a short isoform of the chLEPR (chLEPR-SF). Comparative sequence analysis of intron 19 identified two regions that are highly conserved between the chicken and mammals, indicating their possible importance as intronic elements in the regulation of alternative splicing of the LEPR in vertebrates. Tissue expression of the chLEPR-SF was lower and more restricted than that of the chLEPR long isoform. Collectively these data demonstrate that the chLEPR is alternatively spliced to produce at least one short isoform, as is the case in mammals.     

A peptide of foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype Asia1 generating a neutralizing antibody response, and an immunostimulatory peptide

The epitopes of the capsid of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) play important roles in the construction of highly immunogenic subunit vaccines. However few epitopes have been found for FMDV serotype Asia1. In this study we screened for epitopes of the VP1 and VP2 proteins of FMDV serotype Asia1 isolate, YNBS/58. Fragments consisting of amino acids 133-163 of VP1 and amino acids 1-33 of VP2 contained epitopes, and both induced lymphoproliferation in guinea pigs. Only the VP1 fragment induced neutralizing antibodies but the VP2 peptide dramatically increased the neutralizing antibody response induced by the VP1 peptide.     

Hypertrophic osteopathy associated with disseminated metastases of renal cell carcinoma in the dog: a case report

A 6-year-old, mixed breed, intact male dog showed signs of left carpal joint swelling and weakness of the forelimbs one month before presentation. The symptoms gradually progressed to bilateral carpal and tarsal joint swelling and tetraparalysis. There were a number of radiographically identified lytic-proliferative bone lesions noted on the axial skeleton. Hypertrophic osteopathy of the metacarpi and all distal long bones was also evident. Because of the deteriorating quality of life and guarded prognosis, the patient was euthanized and a complete necropsy was performed. Renal cell carcinoma, with metastasis to the lung, thoracic vertebrae, ribs, and the right adrenal gland, was diagnosed. To our knowledge, renal cell carcinoma with bone metastases and hypertrophic osteopathy has not been reported in dogs.     

Surgical outcome and ocular complications of evisceration and intraocular prosthesis implantation in dogs with end stage glaucoma: a review of 20 cases

Surgical outcome and complications following evisceration and implantation of intraocular silicone prosthesis (ISP) in 20 canine eyes with end-stage glaucoma were analyzed, including clinical signs, complications, cosmetic appearance, and owners' responses. The mean postoperative follow-up time was 312 days. Major short-term surgical complications were central corneal ulceration (6/20) and infections (3/20), while long-term complication was keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) (2/20). All patient owners (100%) showed satisfied with the surgical outcome and postoperative cosmetic effect including 85% of the owners gave an excellent or good rating of satisfaction. No more medication needed for long term control except the KCS cases. With careful case selection and post-operative care, evisceration with ISP implantation proves a good and safe surgical procedure with minimal complications for end stage glaucoma.     

Potential use of a transposon Tn916-generated mutant of Aeromonas hydrophila J-1 defective in some exoproducts as a live attenuated vaccine

Aeromonas hydrophila is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that causes disease in a wide range of hosts due to its multifactorial virulence. Here we describe the application of transposon insertion mutagenesis approach to obtain an exoenzyme mutant of A. hydrophila strain J-1. Immunization of swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri Heckel) with the highly attenuated mutant provided protection (survival of 27 out of 35 fish, compared to survival of only 13 out of 35 control fish) in the fish given the highest immunization dose (10(7) CFU) against intraperitoneal challenge with the wild J-1 strain. Immunization with doses of 10(5) or 10(3) did not provide significant protection.     

Biodegradation of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonate

The paper researches on the degradation of LAS (Linear Alkyl benzene Sulphonate) by combining AS1.860 immobilized with low intensity ultrasonic irradiation. The paper also discusses the influence of pH, rotary velocity, LAS concentration and the condition of low intensity ultrasonic irradiation on the degradation of LAS, the degradation rate of LAS is the main index of our experiment, the results of orthogonal test shows that low ultrasonic irradiation can increase the metabolizing of microorganism cells and facilitate the biodegradation of immobilized cells to LAS, here we research the degradation condition of 50mg/L LAS simulation wastewater with low ultrasonic irradiation, and the results show that the influence is obvious, the optimization degradation rate is about 83%, nine point five percent higher than that of the immobilized cells without ultrasonic irradiation.

NONLINEAR COUPLING IN THERMOELAST1C THEORY AND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM IN THE HALF SPACE

It's recommended that the term coupled in temperature and strain is nonlinear and is significant in thermoelastic theory. Using the solution of linear coupled and uncoupled theory and selecting appropriate general coordinates, authers approach the nonlinear coupled problems with a variational method. A solution to the problem in half space, is given. It is shown that the difference between the nonlinear coupled theory and the linear coupled or uncoupled theory would be notable when the amplitute of temperature is much larger than that of the reference slate.     

THE REIMPROVEMENT FOR IMPULSE OF G. I. TAYLOR THEORY OF PLASTIC DEFORMATION IN IMPACT OF CYL1NDICAL PROJECTILES

In this paper the reimprovement for G. I. Taylor theory of plastic deformation in impact of cylindical projectiles is done. The impulse in the reimproved theory is G. I. Taylor' s 1/2, and 3/4 of G. I. Taylor' s improved theory. The analytical solution of the reimproved theory shows that it gives better agreement with exprimental results than those of the original Taylor' s theory and, the improved theory.
