When first described in 1946, bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) was characterized as an acute transmissible disease associated with severe leucopenia, high fever, depression, diarrhea, gastrointestinal erosions, and hemorrhages. Recently the severe acute form has been related only to some hypervirulent BVDV-2 strains. This article reports the detection of BVDV-1b associated with an acute and fatal outbreak of BVD in a Brazilian beef cattle herd. Depression, anorexia, watery diarrhea, sialorrhea, and weakness were observed in six steers. One of these animals was evaluated for laboratorial, clinical, and pathological alterations. Laboratory findings were non-specific; clinically, the animal was weak, with dehydration and erosive oral lesions. Pathological alterations were predominant at the tongue, esophagus, and rumen. A RT-PCR assay using primers to partially amplify the 5′ untranslated region (5′UTR) of the BVDV genome was performed and identified BVDV in all clinical samples analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis of BVDV derived from lymph node revealed that this strain was clustered within the BVDV subtype 1b. This differentiating was only possible to be performed by molecular characterization since both clinical presentation and pathologic findings were similar to BVDV-2 infection. 相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of levamisole at doses of 5, 7.5 and 10 mg/kg were determined after its intravenous administration to eighteen healthy Merino sheep. Using compartmental analysis, the disposition of the drug best fitted a two-compartmental open model. The mean values for the compartmental volume of distribution at steady state (Vss) were 2.034 +/- 0.23 I, 2.347 +/- 0.720 and 2.001 +/- 0.367 I/kg for each dose, respectively, and values obtained using the statistical moment theory were 2.141 +/- 0.269,2.390 +/- 0.536 and 2.140 +/- 0.345 l/kg for each dose, respectively. There were no dose-related differences (one-way ANOVA) in the constants describing distribution and elimination phases (alpha and beta) or Vss, but significant differences were detected in the total body clearance (Cl) and the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC). After non-compartmental analysis, no significant differences were found when the parameters lambda (the linear terminal slope) and Vss were compared, but significant differences were detected in Cl and AUC. There were no significant differences between the values obtained using the compartmental and non-compartmental analysis when lambda -beta, Cl, Vss, and AUC were compared. 相似文献

Serum samples from 1034 non-carnivorous wildlife from Spain were tested for antibodies to Neospora caninum by competitive screening enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and confirmed by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). High agreement was observed between results in both techniques (kappa value higher than 0.9). Prevalences of N. caninum antibodies positive by both techniques were 11.8% of 237 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 7.7% of 13 barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), 6.1% of 33 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and 0.3% of 298 wild boar (Sus scrofa). In one of 53 hares (Lepus granatensis), antibodies were found in the ELISA but could not be confirmed by IFAT due to lack of sample. Antibodies to N. caninum were not found in any of 251 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), 79 fallow deer (Dama dama), 27 mouflon (Ovis ammon), 40 chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) and three Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Statistically significant differences were observed between N. caninum seroprevalence in red deer and management of hunting estates (open versus fenced) with higher prevalence in fenced estates, and among sampling sites. Seroprevalence was particularly high in some areas (MO estate in South-Central Spain or some estates of Catalonia, North-East Spain), while no contact with N. caninum was observed in others. Results indicate that in certain areas of Spain, N. caninum is present in wildlife, especially in red deer. These results have important implications in both sylvatic cycles and may influence the prevalence of infection in cattle farms in those areas. To our knowledge, this is the first report of antibodies to N. caninum in wildlife from Spain and the first report of N. caninum antibodies in barbary sheep and wild boar. 相似文献

The aims of this study were to evaluate the immunomodulatory role of TGF-β1, IL-10, and INF-γ in spleen and liver extracts and supernatant cultures of white spleen cells from male symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs, naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Thirty dogs from Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, an endemic leishmaniosis area, were selected by positive ELISA serological reaction for Leishmania sp. and divided into two groups: asymptomatic (n = 15) and symptomatic (n = 15) consisting of animals with at least three characteristic signs (fever, dermatitis, lymphoadenopathy, onychogryphosis, weight loss, cachexia, locomotion problems, conjunctivitis, epistaxis, hepatosplenomegaly, edema, and apathy). After euthanasia, spleen and liver fragments were collected for ex vivo quantification of TGF-β1, IL-10, and INF-γ. Naturally active in vitro produced TGF-β1 was also evaluated in spleen cell culture supernatant. Spleen and liver extract of asymptomatic dogs had higher mean TGF-β1 levels than symptomatic dogs. High concentrations of IL-10 were found in spleen, and mainly in liver extract of both groups. Higher INF-γ concentrations were found in spleen extracts of symptomatic dogs, and in liver extracts of asymptomatic dogs. Extract of this cytokine was lower in spleen extract. Although INF-γ is being produced in canine infection, mean levels of TGF-β1 and IL-10 from spleen and liver extracts were quantitatively much higher; suggesting that immune response in both asymptomatic and symptomatic dogs was predominantly type Th2. 相似文献

Progesterone has been reported to reduce Th1 responses during pregnancy. Thus, given that an excessive Th1 response could lead to abortion in Neospora-infected dairy cows, we hypothesized a reduction in abortion risk following progesterone supplementation during the mid-gestation period in these animals. Seropositive animals were assigned on day 120 of gestation to a Control (n=33) or Treatment (n=34) group. Treatment consisted of progesterone supplementation by fitting a progesterone releasing intravaginal device containing 1.55g of progesterone for 28 days. Mean Neospora caninum antibody titres tested by ELISA on days 40, 90 and 120 of gestation were used to classify the cows as showing high (> or =30 units) or low (<30 units) titration. Abortion rate showed a significant increase (P<0.01) in the Treatment group (35%) compared to the Control (9%). Using logistic regression procedures, there was a significant (P<0.0001) interaction between progesterone treatment and antibody titration. Progesterone-treated cows with a high antibody titre showed a likelihood of abortion 14.3 times higher than those not treated, while in cows with low antibody titres, exogenous progesterone had not effect. Our results do not support our starting hypothesis and suggest that progesterone supplementation in cows with high N. caninum antibody titres increases the risk of abortion possibly by affecting cell-mediated immune responses. 相似文献

Developing larvae of Toxocara canis may secrete several kinds of enzymes within the egg perivitelline fluid (EPF) prior to and during hatching. In particular, proteinases in EPF could play a role in larval emergence within the host gastrointestinal lumen but its presence and nature is unknown. In this work, proteolytic activities in hatching fluid of T. canis were identified and analysed by substrate gel electrophoresis at different pH values and by using type specific protease inhibitors. Three bands of 91, 68 and 38 kDa showed gelatinolytic activity and all proteinase activity from EPF was of the aspartic-type since it was inhibited by pepstatin A. Interestingly, a significantly higher proteolytic activity was observed at acidic pH (< or =5.5). These data suggest that T. canis developmentally secretes and accumulates in EPF aspartic proteinases with a pH-dependent activity that might help the parasite to take advantage of conditions in the host gastrointestinal microenvironment where egg hatching is induced and executed. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to characterize a group of small dairy producers in the central coast of Peru and determine
the most important limiting factors that affect animal productivity, using Participatory Rural Appraisal methodologies. The
information collected during a year included biological and socio-economic characteristics. Inappropriate nutrition, management,
health and reproduction were observed in most farms. The average number of animals per family was 17.3, of which 40% were
bulls and growing calves. Milk production and net cash income were reduced in the summer. The feeding programme for lactating
and growing females of forage exchanged for labour and purchased concentrates did not theoretically or practically meet the
cows’ needs. All water was carried to the site on donkeys from one kilometre distance. All cows were negative for a number
of potential infectious diseases. By California Mastitis Test of routine samples 7.1% of cows had clinical mastitis and 66.1%
subclinical. Taking notional labour and forage costs into account, milk production was at a loss but the farmers considered

A 12-year-old Simmental cow was presented with a moderately firm irregular whitish mass of approximately 5 cm in diameter, occupying the right orbit. Microscopically, a poorly differentiated neoplasm was observed. The immunohistochemical panel included cytokeratins, vimentin, epithelial membrane antigen, Factor VIII, CD34, Mart-1, Melan A, smooth muscle actin, desmin, chromogranin, neuron-specific enolase, S-100 protein, and MIB-1. The neoplasm was negative for all of them, with the exception of vimentin and S-100 protein. Transmission electron microscopy revealed abundant desmosomes. These findings support the diagnosis of orbital (retrobulbar) meningioma. 相似文献

The present study is the first conducted in Spain to estimate the bacteriological herd prevalence of Salmonella enterica in fattening units and to describe the Salmonella serovar diversity on these farms using a sample representative of the entire swine population. For this purpose, 10 faecal samples were collected from 10 different pens containing pigs close to market weight in a total of 232 fattening units. Total sample size was proportionally distributed according to the fattener census in each of the regions of the country and all the samples were examined by culture of 25 g of faecal material. One hundred (43.1%) farms had at least one Salmonella-positive sample (95% CI: 37-49.1%). Salmonella enterica was detected in 290 (12.5%) pooled faecal floor samples (95% CI: 11.2-13.8%). The apparent herd prevalence of salmonellosis was similar among multi-site, finishing and farrow to finish farms. Overall, 24 different serovars were identified, with S. Typhimurium, S. Rissen and S. Derby being the most common both at herd and sample level. Results of phage typing were available for the 91 isolates of S. Typhimurium. A total number of 10 different phage types were identified, with DT 193 being the most frequent. Phage types DT 104, DT 104b and DT U302, which have been associated with several multi-resistant patterns, accounted for 23% and 29% of the Typhimurium total isolates or Typhimurium infected farms respectively. 相似文献
