The recent decline of Mediterranean oak woodlands in SW Iberian Peninsula is related to insect pests which affect both cork oak (Quercus suber) and holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia). We identified twenty-six bird species as potential regular predators of twenty major pests by reviewing the diet of breeding, wintering and resident species in this ecosystem. Foraging guilds are strongly associated with predation at distinct stages of the pests’ life-cycle: ground-foragers prey on overwintering pupae and larvae of seed-borers, tree-foragers prey on eggs, larvae and pupae of defoliating and wood-boring pests, and aerial-sweepers prey on airborne imagines. Bird predation can cover the complete life-cycle of pest species because different species may be complementary due to a dissimilar exploitation of foraging niches and periods. Small generalist tree-foraging passerines are important pest predators given their high densities and widespread distribution in Mediterranean oak woodlands, but management practices can have a significant negative effect in their populations. 相似文献

Consolidation treatments are commonly employed in museum conservation studios for treating biologically deteriorated wooden cultural heritage objects. Impregnation using either a solvent/resin or a polymerizing system is an example of such an intervention, which is often difficult to describe in terms of its behavior within the object’s structure. A new simple method has been devised to evaluate the effectiveness of these impregnation treatments in terms of spatial distribution of consolidant solution. A combination of digital radiography and imaging analysis has permitted to evaluate the degree of penetration of a consolidant and to determine its location within the artifact by studying the X-ray images taken before, during, and after treatment. The adequacy of polymer solutions or their effectiveness as wood consolidants is properties which are often difficult to investigate due to limited visual access to the interior of the object. The proposed method provides an alternative way of studying these parameters through analysis of X-ray attenuation recorded on two images: taken before and after the conservation treatment. The resulting image is then converted into a two-dimensional map of consolidation agent within the object using a straightforward calibration procedure. 相似文献

Hydrology-oriented silviculture might adapt Mediterranean forests to climatic changes, although its implementation demands a better understanding and quantification on the water fluxes. The influence of thinning intensity (high, medium, low and a control) and its effect on the mid-term (thinned plots in 1998 and 2008) on the water cycle (transpiration, soil water and interception) and growth [basal area increment (BAI)] were investigated in 55-year-old Aleppo pine trees. Thinning enhanced a lower dependence of growth on climate fluctuations. The high-intensity treatment showed significant increases in the mean annual BAI (from 4.1 to 17.3 cm2) that was maintained in the mid-term. Thinning intensity progressively increased the sap flow velocity (v s) in all cases with respect to the control. In the mid-term, an increased functionality of the inner sapwood was also observed. Mean daily tree water use ranged from 5 (control) to 18 (high intensity) l tree?1. However, when expressed on an area basis, daily transpiration ranged from 0.18 (medium) to 0.30 mm (control), meaning that in spite of the higher transpiration rates in the remaining trees, stand transpiration was reduced with thinning. Deep infiltration of water was also enhanced with thinning (about 30 % of rainfall) and did not compete with transpiration, as both presented opposite seasonal patterns. The changes in the stand water relationships after 10 years were well explained by the forest cover metric. The blue to green water ratio changed from 0.15 in the control to 0.72 in the high-intensity treatment, with the remaining treatments in the 0.34–0.48 range. 相似文献

Summary Pepino (Solanum muricatum), a vegetatively propagated plant from the Andean region used for its edible fruits, has been identified as a potential crop
for greenhouse cultivation in Mediterranean regions. However, attempts for introducing it have been unsuccessful, either because
of the low yield, poor fruit quality, or both. Screening of germplasm under Mediterranean conditions showed that sources of
variation for high yield existed in the cultivated genepool and that wild species S. caripense and S. tabanoense could contribute to a considerable improvement of soluble solids content (SSC) of pepino. Progenies obtained after crossing
genetically distant (AFLP-based) parental clones were heterotic for yield, and allowed the selection of clones with an improved
combination of yield and SSC. As a result of this intraspecific programme, two new improved cultivars (‘Turia’ and ‘Valencia’),
which outperform the rest of cultivars available, have been selected for cultivation in Mediterranean conditions. The interspecific
programme involved the selection of clones with high yield and SSC in backcross generations. The results show that introgression
of genes from the wild species can contribute to improve the SSC of pepino. The backcross programme is in an advanced stage
and new cultivars derived from the interspecific crosses are expected to be released in a near future. New prospects for the
future in pepino breeding include the genetic transformation, the establishment of a genetic map, and the use of the genomic
information from related Solanaceae important crops. All the information obtained is illustrative for the breeding for adaptation

We report the evaluation of the floral origin of honey by analysis of its volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile, joined with the use of combined pattern recognition techniques. Honey samples, from five floral origins, were analyzed by headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, selecting 35 VOCs out of the entire profiles, which were analyzed by hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA), and K-nearest-neighbor (KNN). Both HCA and SDA were used as exploratory tools to select a group of VOCs representing similitude and differences among studied origins. Thus, six out of 35 VOCs were selected, verifying their discriminating power by KNN, which afforded 93% correct classification. Therefore, we drastically reduced the amount of compounds under consideration but kept a good differentiation between floral origins. Selected compounds were identified as octanal, benzeneacetaldehyde, 1-octanol, 2-methoxyphenol, nonanal, and 2-H-1-benzopyran-2-one. The analysis of VOC profiles, coupled to HCA, SDA, and KNN, provides a feasible alternative to evaluate the botanical source of honey. 相似文献

In this work, extraction of antioxidant compounds from Dunaliella salina microalga is optimized by combining pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and experimental design (three-level factorial design) with three different solvents (hexane, ethanol, and water). Two main factors were considered, the extraction temperature (40, 100, and 160 degrees C) and the extraction time (5, 17.5, and 30 min). As response variables, the extraction yield (percent dry weight/initial weight) and the antioxidant activity of the extracts (determined using the TEAC method) were used. The parameters of the model were estimated by multiple linear regression. Results showed that the extraction temperature was the factor having the strongest influence (positive) on the two response variables. The best yields were obtained with ethanol at the higher extraction temperature and time tested. Besides, although hexane extracts provided the best antioxidant activity, ethanol extracts were also very active. The chemical characterization of ethanol extracts was carried out using HPLC-DAD, and attempts have been made to correlate their chemical composition with the antioxidant activity measured. Results pointed out that the extracts contained, besides all-trans-beta-carotene and isomers, several different minor carotenoids that seemed to make a contribution to the antioxidant activity of the extracts. 相似文献

Purpose
The herbicide diuron has the unfortunate property of being strongly adsorbed onto soil organic matter particles, and hence, is slowly degraded in the environment because of its reduced bioavailability. The aim of this work was to gain insight into the fate and behaviour of diuron in the soil–water system, and develop and test an environmentally friendly soil decontamination technique that could give rise to an enhancement of diuron mineralisation by sensitive soil endogenous microorganisms, by means of increasing the bioavailability of the pollutant employing cyclodextrin (CD) solutions what would represent an improvement from both economic and environmental standpoints.Materials and methods
Selected soil colloidal components: montmorillonite, a synthetic humic acid and a synthetic acicular goethite, and two different soils were employed in this study to perform batch adsorption–desorption experiments. Desorption experiments were performed using a 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 solution with and without hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) 50 mM. Assays to study the mineralisation of 14C-labelled diuron were performed in respirometers, into which 10 g of soil and 50 mL of mineral salts medium (MMK) were placed, obtaining a final concentration of 50 mg?kg?1 and a radioactivity of approximately 900 Bq per flask.Results and discussion
Humic acid could be clearly discerned as the major colloidal component responsible for adsorption. HPBCD was used in diuron desorption experiments from soil, showing a strong extracting power on its removal. The mineralisation of diuron in the presence and absence of HPBCD was tested in a soil managed with diuron for several years, involving therefore the presence of microorganisms that have some specificity for diuron. Natural soil attenuation for diuron was improved when a HPBCD solution was used in the presence of micronutrients as a bioavailability enhancer, obtaining 66 % of mineralisation in comparison to that obtained with only micronutrients addition (44 %).Conclusions
The use of HPBCD solution at a very low concentration of only 10 times the diuron equimolar concentration in soil, acts as a bioavailability enhancer, accelerating the passage of the diuron-desorbing fraction from the soil particle surface to the soil solution, and hence, improving the accessibility of the microorganisms to the herbicide. Diuron mineralisation rate and the extent of its mineralisation were improved when the HPBCD solution was employed in the presence of micronutrients. 相似文献89.

Homogenates were prepared from the leaves of hydroponically cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus, L.) under deficient, normal and toxic B conditions and the phenylalanine ammonia‐lyase activity together with the ortho‐diphenolic and micronutrient content were measured every week from one month to flowering The restoration of enzymatic activity on the exogenous addition of borate “in vivo”; was also studied. Both B toxicity and deficiency resulted in increased phenylalanine ammonia‐lyase activity in the homogenates The toxicity effect was early and sustained and the deficiency effect late and transitory. “In vitro”; borate addition to the reaction mixture did not significantly change the phenylalanine‐ammonia‐lyase activity in the homogenates. There was no statistical correlation between the phenylalanine‐ammonia‐lyase activity and any micronutrient content in leaves.
