Root proliferation and greater uptake per unit of root in the nutrient‐rich zones are often considered to be compensatory responses. This study aimed to examine the influence of plant phosphorus (P) status and P distribution in the root zone on root P acquisition and root and shoot growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in a split‐root soil culture. One compartment (A) was supplied with either 4 or 14 mg P (kg soil)–1, whereas the adjoining compartment (B) had 4 mg P kg–1 with a vertical high‐P strip (44 mg kg–1) at 90–110 mm from the plant. Three weeks after growing in the split‐root system, plants with 4 mg P kg–1 (low‐P plants) started to show stimulatory root growth in the high‐P strip. Two weeks later, root dry weight and length density in the high‐P strip were significantly greater for the low‐P plants than for the plants with 14 mg P (kg soil)–1. However, after 8 weeks of growth in the split‐root system, the two P treatments of compartment A had similar root growth in the high‐P strip of compartment B. The study also showed that shoot P concentrations in the low‐P plants were 0.6–0.8 mg g–1 compared with 1.7–1.9 mg g–1 in the 14 mg P kg–1 plants after 3 and 5 weeks of growth, but were similar (1.1–1.4 mg g–1) between the two plants by week 8. The low‐P plants had lower root P concentration in both compartments than those with 14 mg P kg–1 throughout the three harvests. The findings may indicate that root proliferation and P acquisition under heterogeneous conditions are influenced by shoot P status (internal) and soil P distribution (external). There were no differences in the total root and shoot dry weight between the two P treatments at weeks 3 and 5 because enhanced root growth and P uptake in the high‐P strip by the low‐P plants were compensated by reduced root growth elsewhere. In contrast, total plant growth and total root and shoot P contents were greater in the 14 mg P kg1 soil than in the low‐P soil at week 8. The two P treatments did not affect the ratio of root to shoot dry weight with time. The results suggest that root proliferation and greater P uptake in the P‐enriched zone may meet the demand for P by P‐deficient plants only for a limited period of time.  相似文献

An important part of agriculture in the European Mediterranean area is olive (Olea europaea L.) production. Characterising the relationships between properties of different soils where olive is grown and nutrient status in olive leaves can enhance our understanding of soil-plant interactions. Three different soils (Terra rossa, Rendzina, Lithosol) were characterized for their physical and chemical characteristics; plant-available nutrients were extracted with ammonium nitrate. Soils, soil extracts and leaf digests were analysed for nutrients and for nitrogen in soils and leaf. A redundancy analysis (RDA) was applied to elucidate relationships between soil properties and leaf nutrients. As revealed by RDA, leaf concentrations of Mg, K, Ca and micronutrients were explained by available Mg, total carbonates and soil organic carbon in topsoil. Leaf concentration of Na was associated with total Na in topsoil. Copper and Mo deficiencies were detected in plants grown in Lithosol, and Mg, P, Mn and Zn deficiencies were noted in all plants. Through appropriate agronomic techniques, Lithosols can be used for olive groves, but they have significant limitation regarding nutrient availability. Our results support the relevance of using soil nutrient variability to provide a basis for optimisation of measures for olive groves.  相似文献

Genotypic variation to zinc (Zn) deficiency in barley indicates that selection for Zn efficiency is possible. Sahara (Zn-efficient) and Clipper (Zn-inefficient) were evaluated at different Zn nutrition in soil and chelator-buffered nutrient. Zinc deficiency symptoms appeared first in Clipper and later in Sahara. At 0.8 mg Zn/kg soil, shoot and root Zn concentration and content were higher in Sahara than Clipper. The root:shoot dry matter ratio of genotypes increased as Zn application decreased. The 4th and 5th leaf elongation were depressed greater in Clipper than Sahara by Zn deficiency. The genotypes responses to Zn in solution and soil were consistent in all parameters except root growth. In contrast to soil, root drymatter was greater in Clipper than Sahara in solution under Zn deficiency. Shoot Zn concentration and content can be used in assessment of barley genotypes, and may be useful criteria in screening large genotypes aimed at developing molecular markers for Zn efficiency.  相似文献

Two barley cultivars (‘Sahara’ = Zn-efficient and ‘Clipper’ = Zn-inefficient) were grown at different soil Zn fertilization (0, 0.2, 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 mg Zn kg?1 soil). Root exudates were collected 16 and 28 days after sowing. At Zn = 0, shoot dry matter was decreased in both genotypes, but more distinctly in ‘Clipper’. At 0.2 mg Zn kg?1, the ‘Sahara’ shoot concentrations of Zn was 130% higher and shoot Zn content 44% greater compared with ‘Clipper’. Low-molecular-weight organic acid anions (=carboxylates) (malate, maleate, fumarate and cis-aconitate) and amino acids (alanine, valine, proline, aspartic acid and glutamic acid) were detected in root exudates, with the highest concentration at Zn = 0.2 mg kg?1 soil. Higher concentrations of organic acid anions as well as amino acids were noted in the rhizosphere of ‘Sahara’ than ‘Clipper’. The genotypic differences in Zn acquisition from soil may be linked to differential carboxylate and amino acid composition of root exudates.  相似文献

Narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) is widely planted in infertile acidic soils where phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major limiting factors for plant growth. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to examine the morphological and physiological responses of roots of narrow-leafed lupin in response to altered P supply at 0, 1, 10, 25 or 75 μ M P as monopotassium phosphate (KH2PO4). Low P (P0 and P1) significantly decreased the plant biomass, but the supply of 10 μ M P was sufficient to produce similar plant biomass as the maximal P supply (P75), indicating an efficient P acquisition by narrow-leafed lupin. Phosphorus deficiency did not enhance rates of carboxylate exudation and proton release by plant roots, indicating that carboxylate exudation and proton release are not the mechanisms for efficient P acquisition. In contrast, low P supply evidently modified the root morphology by increasing the primary root elongation, and developing a large number of cluster-like first-order lateral roots with dense root hairs, thus allowing efficient P acquisition by narrow-leafed lupin under low P supply.  相似文献

In a pot experiment, the P‐efficient wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Goldmark was grown in ten soils from South Australia covering a wide range of pH (four acidic, two neutral, and four alkaline soils) with low to moderate P availability. Phosphorus (100 mg P kg–1) was supplied as FePO4 to acidic soils, CaHPO4 to alkaline, and 1:1 mixture of FePO4 and CaHPO4 to neutral soils. Phosphorus uptake was correlated with P availability measured by anion‐exchange resin and microbial biomass P in the rhizosphere. Growth and P uptake were best in the neutral soils, lower in the acidic, and poorest in the alkaline soils. The good growth in the neutral soils could be explained by a combination of extensive soil exploitation by the roots and high phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere, indicating microbial facilitation of organic‐P mineralization. The plant effect (soil exploitation by roots) appeared to dominate in the acidic soils. Alkaline phosphatase and diesterase activities in acidic soils were lower than in neutral soils, but strongly increased in the rhizosphere compared with the bulk soil, suggesting that microorganisms contribute to P uptake in these acidic soils. Shoot and root growth and P uptake per unit root length were lowest in the alkaline soils. Despite high alkaline phosphatase and diesterase activities in the alkaline soils, microbial biomass P was low, suggesting that the enzymes could not mineralize sufficient organic P to meet the demands of plants and microorganisms. Microbial‐community composition, assessed by fatty acid methylester (FAME) analysis, was strongly dependent on soil pH, whereas other soil properties (organic‐C or CaCO3 content) were less important or not important at all (soil texture).  相似文献

Chilean volcanic soils contain large amounts of total and organic phosphorus, but P availability is low. Phosphobacteria [phytate-mineralizing bacteria (PMB) and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB)] were isolated from the rhizosphere of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), white clover (Trifolium repens), wheat (Triticum aestivum), oat (Avena sativa), and yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus) growing in volcanic soil. Six phosphobacteria were selected, based on their capacity to utilize both Na-phytate and Ca-phosphate on agar media (denoted as PMPSB), and characterized. The capacity of selected PMPSB to release inorganic P (Pi) from Na-phytate in broth was also assayed. The results showed that from 300 colonies randomly chosen on Luria–Bertani agar, phosphobacteria represented from 44% to 54% in perennial ryegrass, white clover, oat, and wheat rhizospheres. In contrast, phosphobacteria represented only 17% of colonies chosen from yellow lupin rhizosphere. This study also revealed that pasture plants (perennial ryegrass and white clover) have predominantly PMB in their rhizosphere, whereas PSB dominated in the rhizosphere of crops (oat and wheat). Selected PMPSB were genetically characterized as Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, and Pantoea; all showed the production of phosphoric hydrolases (alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, and naphthol phosphohydrolase). Assays with PMPSB resulted in a higher Pi liberation compared with uninoculated controls and revealed also that the addition of glucose influenced the Pi-liberation capacity of some of the PMPSB assayed.  相似文献
