The relative importance of the pelagic flux of aragonite, as compared to calcite, to the deep-sea floor has been evaluated by means of a quantitative x-ray diffraction study of samples collected from sediment traps and from an unusually shallow portion of the open Atlantic Ocean (the Rio Grande Rise). The results suggest that the aragonite flux constitutes at least 12 percent of the total flux of calcium carbonate on a worldwide basis. The presence of high-magnesium calcite in several samples suggests that some of the calcareous material falling to the deep-sea floor may be derived from the long-distance transport of debris from shallow-water beenthic organisms as well as from the settling of planktonic remains. This observation supports the contention that 12 percent represents a minimum value. Aragonite and high-magnesium calcite transported laterally from shallow-water regions, upon dissolution during settling into deeper water, may contribute to the neutralization of excess anthropogenic carbon dioxide added to the oceans. 相似文献

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a pleiotropic cytokine that stimulates a wide array of cellular targets, including hepatocytes and other epithelial cells, melanocytes, endothelial and hematopoietic cells. We have cloned a different form of cDNA, with a deletion of 15 base pairs predicted to result in the loss of 5 amino acids from the first kringle domain. To investigate the biological activity, original and deleted variant of feline HGF cDNAs were transiently expressed in COS-7 cells. Both recombinant feline HGFs showed almost the same dose-response curves in the stimulation of the growth of BNL CL.2 cells (a mouse hepatocyte cell line) and scatter activity of Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells. The findings reported here suggest that the deleted variant of feline HGF has almost the same biological activity as the original in terms of the proliferation and scatter activity. 相似文献

The storage of ripe tomatoes in low-O(2) conditions with and without CO(2) promotes γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) accumulation. The activities of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and α-ketoglutarate-dependent GABA transaminase (GABA-TK) were higher and lower, respectively, following storage under hypoxic (2.4 or 3.5% O(2)) or adjusted aerobic (11% O(2)) conditions compared to the activities in air for 7 days at 25 °C. GAD activity was consistent with the expression level of mRNA for GAD. The GABA concentration in tomatoes stored under hypoxic conditions and adjusted aerobic conditions was 60-90% higher than that when they are stored in air on the same day. These results demonstrate that upregulation of GAD activity and downregulation of GABA-TK activity cause GABA accumulation in tomatoes stored under low-O(2) conditions. Meanwhile, the effect of CO(2) on GABA accumulation is probably minimal. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of short- and long- term administration of glucocorticoids, feeding status, and serum concentrations of insulin and cortisol on plasma leptin concentrations in dogs. ANIMALS: 20 nonobese dogs. PROCEDURE: For experiment 1, plasma leptin concentrations and serum concentrations of insulin and cortisol were monitored for 24 hours in 4 dogs administered dexamethasone (0.1 mg/kg, IV) or saline (0.9% NaCl) solution for fed and nonfed conditions. For experiment 2, 11 dogs were administered prednisolone (1 mg/kg, PO, q 24 h for 56 days [7 dogs] and 2 mg/kg, PO, q 24 h for 28 days [4 dogs]) and 5 dogs served as control dogs. Plasma leptin and serum insulin concentrations were monitored weekly. RESULTS: For experiment 1, dexamethasone injection with the fed condition drastically increased plasma leptin concentrations. Furthermore, injection of saline solution with the fed condition increased plasma leptin concentrations. These increases in plasma leptin concentrations correlated with increases in serum insulin concentrations. Dexamethasone injection with the nonfed condition increased plasma leptin concentrations slightly but continuously. Injection of saline solution with the nonfed condition did not alter plasma leptin concentrations. For experiment 2, prednisolone administration at either dosage and duration did not alter plasma leptin concentrations in any dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dexamethasone injection and feeding increased plasma leptin concentrations in dogs. In addition, dexamethasone administration enhanced the effect of feeding on increases in plasma leptin concentrations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate postprandial changes in the leptin concentration of CSF in dogs during development of obesity. ANIMALS: 4 male Beagles. PROCEDURES: Weight gain was induced and assessments were made when the dogs were in thin, optimal, and obese body conditions (BCs). The fat area at the level of the L3 vertebra was measured via computed tomography to assess the degree of obesity. Dogs were evaluated in fed and unfed states. Dogs in the fed state received food at 9 AM. Blood and CSF samples were collected at 8 AM, 4 PM, and 10 PM. RESULTS: Baseline CSF leptin concentrations in the thin, optimal, and obese dogs were 24.3 +/- 2.7 pg/mL, 86.1 +/- 14.7 pg/mL, and 116.2 +/- 47.3 pg/mL, respectively. In the thin BC, CSF leptin concentration transiently increased at 4 PM. In the optimal BC, baseline CSF leptin concentration was maintained until 10 PM. In the obese BC, CSF leptin concentration increased from baseline value at 4 PM and 10 PM. Correlation between CSF leptin concentration and fat area was good at all time points. There was a significant negative correlation between the CSF leptin concentration-to-serum leptin concentration ratio and fat area at 4 PM; this correlation was not significant at 8 AM and 10 PM. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Decreased transport of leptin at the blood-brain barrier may be 1 mechanism of leptin resistance in dogs. Summary To study differential nucleus-cytoplasm interactions between the two cultivated rice species, Oryza sativa and O. glaberrima, cytoplasmic substitution lines were made by using a glaberrima strain (G) and an Indica strain of sativa (S). The G cytoplasm had no adverse effect on pollen development when combined with the nucleus of S. On the other hand, when the S cytoplasm was combined with the G nucleus, the substitution line showed no seed set because of male sterility although the pollen grains were normally stained with I2-KI solution. A dominant gene derived from S strain seemed to cause anther indehiscence in the substitution line. Further, a restorer gene (Rf

This study focuses the inter-relationships among the men, the use, and the intra-specific cassava diversity, under the perspective
of this crop evolutionary dynamics. The origin, the use and the current local management of varieties with high and low cyanogenic
potential are important questions around cassava domestication. We collected 169 local varieties identified as “sweet” or
“bitter” cassava by traditional farmers from Atlantic Forest and Amazon (Medium Negro River Basin), Brazil. Using a population
genetics and an ethnobotany approach, the diversity and the genetic structure of cassava were evaluated. We found a total
of 115 vernacular names, and in the Atlantic Forest sample the average genetic diversity (H
S = 0.654) was higher for the sweet varieties than for bitter ones (0.582). The genetic differentiation coefficient (R
ST), used to estimate the diversity among groups, was 0.057 (P < 0.001), indicating that the divergence between the two groups is low. We obtained a low correlation between the morphological
and genetic distances, and the congruence was high when the ethnoclassification and the genetic structure were considered.
We discuss the adaptive advantages of the sweet varieties use, the current socio-economic changes in bitter varieties use,
