Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and bluegill Lepomis macrochirus have been introduced into many countries and have become cosmopolitan exotic species. However, only a few studies show their impact on introduced communities. To investigate their impact, we performed natural snapshot experiments in 15 farm ponds in Saitama prefecture, eastern Japan. We selected 10 and 5 small ponds in similar environmental conditions, but with and without exotics, respectively. The numbers of fish, crustaceans, and nymphal odonates were smaller in ponds where exotics were found and some species were considered to be locally extinct in several ponds. On the other hand, the numbers of benthic organisms, i.e. tadpoles, chironomids, chaoborids, and Oligochaeta were more abundant in ponds with exotics. These two groups of organisms were separated clearly on the first axis of DCA, which indicats that this difference was mainly induced by bass predation. This result suggests a trophic cascade in which top-down effects induced by exotics propagated to fish, crustaceans, and nymphal odonates directly and to some benthic organisms indirectly. Therefore, when one is to conserve native organisms, attention should be paid not only to direct negative effects, but also to indirect effects propagating to various trophic levels. Because farm ponds are typical Japanese small lentic systems having rich biodiversities and bass and bluegill have been shown to change farm pond communities widely, conservational treatments including eradication of exotic fish should be conducted immediately.  相似文献

Pedigree analysis of factor XI deficiency in Japanese black cattle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Using a DNA-based diagnostic test for factor XI deficiency in Japanese black cattle, we surveyed 123 cattle (42 sires and 81 dams) in Gifu and Hyogo prefectures, and calculated gene frequencies. In sires, we drew up the pedigree network of the cattle with the factor XI deficiency. Results showed that the mutated allele of factor XI deficiency was retroactive in at least 6 or more generations of sires. Frequencies of the mutant gene were higher at 26.4% in total, and at 33.3% in sires. All 7 cattle with the homozygote of mutated allele were clinically normal, and showed no bleeding episodes. The mutated allele of factor XI deficiency might be widespread among Japanese black cattle.  相似文献

Eleven somatic hybrids (2n = 68 to 74) obtained between S. tuberosum ssp. tuberosum cv. Dejima (2n = 48) and ATDH-1 (2n = 24), an anther-culture-derived dihaploid of S. acaule (Yamada et al., 1997), were characterized by nuclear RFLP markers using 49 single-copy DNA probes distributed throughout the potato genome (2 to 6 probes per chromosome). One of the somatic hybrids, DA8-2, had 72 chromosomes and all the Dejima- and ATDH-1-specific markers (124 and 103 bands, respectively), suggesting the presence of a whole set of both parental chromosomes. The other somatic hybrids lost varying numbers of markers up to seventeen. The pattern of the loss of markers indicated the elimination of five chromosomes among four somatic hybrids. A nucleolar organizer region of chromosome 2 was often eliminated in the somatic hybrids. The somatic hybrids studied here had higher frequencies of multivalent formation than the S. tuberosum parent. They had reasonably good seed set when pollinated with S. tuberosum pollen. Hence, homoeologous recombination between S. acaule and S. tuberosum chromosomes is possible and useful traits from S. acaule may be transferred to the S. tuberosum gene pool. The objective of this study was to identify physiological processes that result in genotypic and N fertilization effects on rice yield response to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]). This study conducted growth and yield simulations for 9 rice genotypes grown at 4 climatically different sites in Asia, assuming the current atmospheric [CO2] (360 ppm) and elevated [CO2] (700 ppm) using 5 levels of N fertilizer (4, 8, 12, 16, 20 g m−2 N fertilizer). A rice growth model that was developed and already validated for 9 different genotypes grown under 7 sites in Asia was used for the simulation, integrating additional components into the model to explain the direct effect of [CO2] on several physiological processes. The model predicted that the relative yield response to elevated [CO2] (RY, the ratio of yield under 700 ppm [CO2] to that under 360 ppm [CO2]) increased with increasing N fertilizer, ranging from 1.12 at 4 g m−2 N fertilizer to 1.22 at 20 g m−2 N fertilizer, averaged overall genotypes and locations. The model also predicted a large genotypic variation in RY at the 20 g N treatment, ranging from 1.08 for ‘WAB450-I-B-P-38-HB’ to 1.41 for ‘Takanari’ averaged overall locations. Combining all genotypes grown at the 5N fertilization conditions, a close 1:1 relationship was predicted between RY and the relative [CO2] response in spikelet number for crops with a small number of spikelets (less than 30,000 m−2) under the current atmospheric [CO2] (n = 18, r = 0.89***). In contrast, crops with a large number of spikelets under the current atmospheric [CO2] showed a significantly larger RY than the relative [CO2] response for spikelet number per unit area. The model predicted that crops with a larger number of spikelets under the current atmospheric [CO2] derived great benefit from elevated [CO2] by directly allocating increased carbohydrate to their large, vacant sink, whereas crops with a smaller number of spikelets primarily required an increased spikelet number to use the increased carbohydrate to fill grains. The simulation analyses suggested that rice with a larger sink capacity relative to source availability under the current atmospheric [CO2] showed a larger yield response to elevated [CO2], irrespective of whether genotype or N availability was the major factor for the large sink capacity under the current [CO2]. The model predicted that the RY response to nitrogen was brought about through the N effects on spikelet number and non-structural carbohydrate accumulation. The genotypic variation in RY was related to differences in spikelet differentiation efficiency per unit plant N content. Further model validation about the effects of [CO2] on growth processes is required to confirm these findings considering data from experimental studies.  相似文献

To investigate the roles of mammary PTHrP in calcium uptake and/or release in the mammary gland of cows, plasma PTHrP and Ca levels, and their arterial-venous differences were examined in a Jersey cow during the periparturient period. Levels of Ca in both abdominal aorta and abdominal subcutaneous vein blood slightly decreased around the parturition and at 24 days after the parturition, however, no remarkable arterial-venous differences were observed. Plasma PTHrP levels in both arterial and venous samples were below the detection limit (0.57 pmol/l) during the experimental period. Milk PTHrP and Ca levels were measured in 9 Holstein dairy cows. Although plasma PTHrP levels in all arterial and venous samples were also below the detection limit, milk PTHrP and Ca levels were remarkably high, ranging from 14,900 pmol/l to 41,200 pmol/l and from 772 mg/l to 1,200 mg/l, respectively. In addition, a significant positive correlation (P<0.01) was observed between milk PTHrP and Ca levels. These results suggested that mammary PTHrP is closely related to Ca concentration in the milk.  相似文献

Chromosome 3A of wheat is known to carry earliness per se genes. To determine the number of genes and their arm location, ear emergence time under a controlled environment was nvestigated using ditelosomic lines and homozygous recombinant substitution lines developed between chromosome 3A homologues from (Timstein) and (Chinese Spring) (CS) in a CS genetic background. Because the ear emergence distribution was discontinuous and two separate modes were produced, the 86 recombinant lines could be divided into 21 lines as the early ‘Timstein’3A type and 65 lines as the late CS type. This agrees with the 1:3 independent segregation of two genes both located on chromosome 3A. Therefore, two hypotheses can be proposed, either CS(‘Timstein’ 3A) carries two genes and both are necessary to give early ear emergence, or one gene for early ear emergence is present on (Timstein) 3A, but a suppressor is on CS 3A. The behaviour of ditelosomic 3AL and 3AS lines, with an ear emergence time identical to that of CS, suggested that one gene is located on the long arm and the other is on the short arm.  相似文献

We evaluated i) the difference in river water chemistry between a watershed mainly consisting of pasture and a watershed mainly consisting of forest, and ii) how the chemistry of river draining the pasture is influenced by that of the river draining the forest. We selected one river (designated as the T-river) draining the pasture (3,587 ha), and two rivers draining a forest (738 and 879 ha) in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan. During higher river flow due to precipitation and thawing, the concentrations of NO 3 , SO 4 2− , K+, Fe, and Al increased, suggesting the relative importance of the shallow soil layer as their source. On the other hand, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Si decreased, suggesting the relative importance of the source in a deep soil layer. The concentrations of NO 3 , Cl, SO 4 2− , K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Fe were higher in the T-river than in the forest drainage waters, suggesting the contribution of the excretion components from the milk cows. The Si concentration exhibited the opposite pattern. The concentrations of NO 3 , Cl, SO 4 2− , K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ (p<0.001), and Fe (p<0.05) in the T-river decreased after the confluence of the forest drainage waters, while Si concentration increased (p<0.001). The reason for the change in river chemistry was the confluence of the forest drainage waters. These findings suggested the environmental role of the forest in the dilution of the polluted river. The ability to predict the environmental behavior of chemicals precisely is important for realizing more rational regulation. In this study, the bioaccumulation of nine chemicals of different molecular weights absorbed via the intestinal tract was evaluated in fish using the everted gut sac method. The amounts of chemicals that passed through the intestinal membrane after a 24-hr exposure were significantly decreased for chemicals with MW≥548 and Dmax min≥15.8 Å (or Dmax aver≥17.2 Å). These thresholds are consistent with those previously proposed in terms of MW (>800) and molecular size (Dmax min>15.6 Å or Dmax aver>17.1 Å) for the limit of permeable chemicals through the gill membrane. The results show that the same MW and Dmax criteria can be used to predict low bioaccumulation through both the gill membrane and the intestinal tract. These findings are helpful in reducing the need to conduct animal tests in environmental safety studies.  相似文献
