Management of disc-associated wobbler syndrome with a partial slot fenestration and position screw technique

A previously unpublished surgical technique for the management of disc-associated wobbler syndrome is described. A series of 17 middle-aged dobermanns (mean age 7·4 years) with this condition were managed by a technique of partial slot fenestration and position screw fixation of the affected disc space (C6/7 in all cases). One patient was lost to follow-up and, of the remaining 16 cases, 13 improved following surgery (81 per cent). The three failures were a consequence of incorrect placement of one of the screws. Careful evaluation of immediate postoperative radiographs allows this problem to be identified; the screw can then be correctly repositioned with an immediate return to surgery.     

Effects of adrenergic agonists and antagonists on the blood pressure and heart rate of the pig fetus

The effects of adrenergic agonists and antagonists on blood pressure and heart rate were investigated in 18 chronically catheterised pig fetuses aged between 102 and 109 days of gestation (term is 114 days). One fetus had been decapitated in utero at 42 days of gestation. The alpha adrenergic agonist methoxamine produced a small but dose dependent hypertension and a dose related slowing in heart rate. The beta adrenergic agonist isoprenaline decreased mean arterial pressure in a dose related manner and produced tachycardia. Propranolol, a beta adrenergic blocker, increased mean arterial pressure and decreased heart rate. The response to subsequent alpha adrenergic blockade with phentolamine was hypotension and a slight bradycardia. Decapitation at 42 days of gestation did not seem to change the fetal responsiveness to adrenergic agonists but removed the blood pressure response to beta blockade. These observations indicate that the heart and circulation of the pig fetus are under adrenergic vasomotor control during late gestation.     

Glycosylated albumin and serum protein in diabetic dogs

Glycosylated albumin and glycosylated protein in serum were measured in 4 well-controlled diabetic dogs, 4 poorly controlled diabetic dogs, and 21 nondiabetic dogs. Concentrations of both glycosylated components in the well-controlled dogs were similar to those in nondiabetic dogs. Serum concentrations of glycosylated albumin and protein in the poorly controlled diabetic dogs were higher (P less than 0.001) than those of the nondiabetic and well-controlled diabetic dogs. Because of the essentially irreversible nature of the glycosylation reaction and the relatively short turnover time of albumin and other serum proteins, measurements of glycosylated serum components may provide an index of glycemia during the preceding days or weeks.     

Efficacy of fenbendazole against inhibited larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi in yearling cattle

Efficacy of fenbendazole, at doses of 7.5 and 10.0 mg/kg of body weight, against inhibited early 4th-stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi and other nematodes of the abomasum and intestinal tract, was investigated in naturally infected yearling heifers in late May 1982. In Louisiana, this is near the end of the period (March to May) in which maximal numbers of inhibition-prone larvae are acquired. The mean numbers of O ostertagi in 10 untreated control cattle were: adults, 4,880; developing 4th-stage larvae, 12,546; and inhibited early 4th-stage larvae, 167,931. At the 7.5 mg/kg dose level (10% liquid suspension) in 10 cattle, percentage reduction of O ostertagi in comparison with controls was: adults, 95.7%; developing 4th stages, 91.1%; and inhibited 4th stage, 55.0%. Percentage reductions of other genera were as follows: abomasum--Trichostrongylus axei, 99.6%; Haemonchus sp, 95.1%; intestinal tract--Cooperia spp, 97.8%; Trichostrongylus colubriformis, 100.0%; and Oesophagostomum radiatum 4th stage and adults, 100.0%. At the 10.0 mg/kg dose (10% liquid suspension) in 11 cattle, the percentage reduction of O ostertagi in comparison with controls was: adults, 98.6%; developing 4th stages, 92.9%; and inhibited 4th stage, 80.0%. Percentage reductions of other genera were: abomasum--T axei, 99.9%; Haemonchus sp, 98.8%; intestinal tract--Cooperia spp, 99.3%; T colubriformis, 100.0%; and Oes radiatum 4th stage and adults, 100.0%. Variability of efficacy against inhibited larvae was observed, particularly at the 7.5 mg/kg dose; at this dose, 7 of the 10 heifers in the group yielded in excess of 54,000 surviving larvae.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Progesterone receptors in feline mammary adenocarcinomas

Estradiol and progesterone receptors were measured in tumor cytosols from 3 intact and 4 neutered female cats with spontaneously occurring mammary adenocarcinomas. Serum from 2 of the intact cats which had been in estrus 4 and 4 to 6 weeks before tumor excision contained progesterone concentrations of 16.2 and 2.2 ng/ml, respectively; serum progesterone in the other cats was less than 2 ng/ml. Estradiol receptors were not detected in any cytosols. Progesterone receptors were detected in all of the cytosols, in concentrations ranging from 4.0 to 11.7 (mean = 7.2) fmol/mg of protein. Scatchard plot analysis of tumor cytosol from an 8th cat with mammary adenocarcinoma revealed presence of high affinity progesterone binding with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 3.47 nM. Tumor receptor content could not be correlated with stage of the estrous cycle nor with whether the cat was intact or neutered.     

Teratological examination of the insecticide methylparathion (Wofatox 50 EC) on pheasant embryos. 1. Morphological study

Teratogenic effects of methylparathion / Wofatox 50 EC/ and Parathion 20 WP as positive control material were tested in pheasant embryos. On the 12th day of incubation 0.1 ml of the emulsions or suspensions of the insecticides at different concentrations was inoculated into the air space of embryonated eggs. The following dose levels were employed: 27 and 270 mg/kg egg of Wofatox 50 EC, and 10 mg/kg of Parathion 20 WP. Morphological changes were evaluated by macroscopic, skeletal staining and light microscopic examinations of the embryos. Primary hypoplasia or atrophy developed in the cervical musculature /m. longus colli/ accompanied by lordosis and scoliosis of the cervical spine. In most cases we also found cyllosis .
