In recent years, the food, pharma, and cosmetic industries have shown considerable interest in bioactive molecules of marine origin that show high potential for application as nutraceuticals and therapeutic agents. Astaxanthin, a lipid-soluble and orange-reddish-colored carotenoid pigment, is one of the most investigated pigments. Natural astaxanthin is mainly produced from microalgae, and it shows much stronger antioxidant properties than its synthetic counterpart. This paper aims to summarize and discuss the important aspects and recent findings associated with the possible use of crustacean byproducts as a source of astaxanthin. In the last five years of research on the crustaceans and their byproducts as a source of natural astaxanthin, there are many new findings regarding the astaxanthin content in different species and new green extraction protocols for its extraction. However, there is a lack of information on the amounts of astaxanthin currently obtained from the byproducts as well as on the cost-effectiveness of the astaxanthin production from the byproducts. Improvement in these areas would most certainly contribute to the reduction of waste and reuse in the crustacean processing industry. Successful exploitation of byproducts for recovery of this valuable compound would have both environmental and social benefits. Finally, astaxanthin’s strong biological activity and prominent health benefits have been discussed in the paper.  相似文献

Purpose  

Sono-Fenton-like process was tested to degrade naphthalene in spiked soil utilizing mineral iron as a catalyst to generate radical species as well as to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method and to optimize the treatment conditions. The study assessed the relationships between the most significant process variables (initial naphthalene and hydrogen peroxide concentrations) and their response on naphthalene degradation efficiency using central composite design at various ultrasound irradiation intensities. The electrical energy per order was also calculated to illustrate economic benefits of this “hybrid” technique.  相似文献

Nanofibers have a great potential for enzyme immobilization application due to their large surface area to volume ratio besides their porous structure. In this work, we produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanofibers via electrospinning method in dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. Thereafter, we employ a chemical method on final PMMA nanofiberous web to covalently immobilize acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme on membrane surface. Morphology and tensile properties of nanofibers are studied as first steps of characterization to make sure of obtaining a properly stable membrane for enzyme carrying application. Thereafter, the stability and activity of immobilized enzymes as two main characteristic parameters are tested and reported for different applications such as biosensor manufacturing.  相似文献

This work is a detailed study of the infection of fungal biotrophic pathogens causing powdery mildew diseases on introgression lines originating from the intergeneric hybridisation between wheat and barley (Triticum aestivum L. × Hordeum vulgare L.). Powdery mildew fungi are among the most widespread biotrophic pathogens of plants also and infect dicot and monocot species. Most powdery mildew species are strictly host specific. They colonize only a narrow range of species or one particular host species. The intergeneric hybridisation between wheat and barley could result in expansions of host ranges of the barley powdery mildew. Our experiments covered natural infections in the field and artificial infections under greenhouse conditions. Formae speciales of powdery mildew were identified on the basis of the sequencing results of ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequences (rDNA-ITS). We identified Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici isolate 14 (HM484334) on the wheat parent and all wheat-barley introgression lines and B. g. f. sp. hordei isolate MUMH1723 (AB 273556) on the barley parent, respectively. The wheat-barley introgression lines were inoculated with barley powdery mildew under greenhouse conditions. According to our results the added barley chromosomes (or segments) do not cause host range expansion of barley powdery mildew.  相似文献

Four Hungarian winter wheat cultivars were investigated for their susceptibility to the geminivirus Wheat dwarf virus (WDV). Previously, two cultivars (Mv Regiment and Mv Emese) were assessed by breeders to exhibit virus symptoms in the field, whereas Mv Dalma and Mv Vekni showed few symptoms. Two inoculation techniques for WDV, vector transmission with the leafhopper Psammotettix alienus and agroinoculation, were used. Leafhopper transmission was more efficient than agroinoculation. However, irrespective of the technique used, no Mv Dalma or Mv Vekni plants showed clear WDV symptoms. In contrast, 3/30 Mv Emese and 4/36 Mv Regiment plants showed dwarfing and chlorosis after agroinoculation and 13/17 and 14/15 plants, respectively, had clear WDV symptoms after vector transmission. WDV‐specific PCR showed that Mv Vekni and Mv Dalma plants could be infected, especially following vector transmission (approximately 50% infection), but at significantly lower frequency than Mv Emese or Mv Regiment plants (100% infection). Furthermore, real‐time PCR showed that WDV DNA accumulated to much lower levels in infected Mv Vekni and Mv Dalma plants than in infected Mv Regiment and Mv Emese plants. The data strongly suggest that Mv Vekni and Mv Dalma are partially resistant to WDV infection. As WDV resistance has not previously been identified in wheat, and because WDV can cause significant yield losses, the resistance of Mv Vekni or Mv Dalma will provide a valuable breeding resource.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare shear stability of simulated humeral lateral condylar fractures reduced with either a self-compressing pin or cortical bone screw. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical tests. SAMPLE POPULATION: Bilateral cadaveric canine humeri (n=18) without evidence of elbow disease. METHODS: Lateral condylar fracture was simulated by standardized osteotomy. Bone fragments were stabilized with a self-compressing pin or a cortical bone screw (2.7 or 3.5 mm) inserted in lag fashion. Specimens were mounted in a materials testing system and the condylar fragment displaced in a proximal direction until failure. Mechanical testing variables derived from load-deformation curves were compared between stabilization methods using a Student's paired t-test. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences for mechanical testing variables between pin and screw stabilized specimens at expected walk and trot loads. Three yield points subjectively coincided with yield of the interfragmentary interface (Y1), bone at the implant interface (Y2), and implant deformation (Y3). Displacements at Y1 were 48-156% greater for pin than screw stabilized specimens. Y2 and Y3 loads were higher for screw than pin stabilized specimens, but likely supraphysiologic for dogs convalescing after surgical repair. CONCLUSIONS: A self-compressing pin or a cortical bone screw inserted in lag fashion both provided adequate strength in applied shear to sustain expected physiologic loads through the repaired canine elbow during postoperative convalescence. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Because self-compressing pins were easy to implant and mechanical properties were not significantly different than cortical screws at expected physiologic loads, pins should be considered for the repair of traumatic humeral condylar fractures.  相似文献

The authors' hypothesis is that the members of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) such as citrate decrease in association with increased ketone body formation. To prove this hypothesis the connection between ketone bodies and citrate formation of milk was studied. A fluorimetric method was used to determine citrate and a headspace sampling gas chromatographic (GC) method was developed for determination of ketone bodies. Under real conditions of milk sampling, transport and storage, preserved milk samples of 119 clinically healthy dairy cows obtained in the 48 hours after milking were investigated. A low level of acetoacetate (ACAC) was found in all samples. This fact can be explained by the spontaneous decarboxylation of acetoacetate during sample storage (previously decarboxylised acetoacetate = pdACAC) and, consequently, the majority of the amount of acetoacetate in the samples (AC + pdACAC) appeared in the measured acetone concentrations. Based on the measured acetone concentration of milk samples two groups were formed retrospectively: HA (high-acetone) group (n = 41) with an AC + pdACAC concentration of > 0.4 mmol/l and a LA (low-acetone) group (n = 78) with an AC + pdACAC level of < or = 0.4 mmol/l. In the milk of cows of Group HA a positive correlation (r = +0.623) and linear connection between acetone (AC + pdACAC) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB) levels was found [BOHB = 2.491 + 0.586 x (pdAC + ACAC)]. Furthermore, in this group a negative correlation between citrate and BOHB and AC + pdACAC was also established (r = -0.579). Focusing on the results of this group the authors found a significant drop of AC + pdACAC and citrate during the metabolically critical first 1-4 weeks of lactation. For this reason they suggest that simple, easy, automated methods (i.e. flow injection analysis, Fourier transformation infrared analysis) should be introduced for the simultaneous determination of acetone and citrate concentration in milk to make the evaluation of the energy status of high-producing dairy cows easier and more certain.  相似文献

H7N9 virus infection is a global concern, given that it can cause severe infection and mortality in humans. However, the understanding of H7N9 epidemiology, animal reservoir species and zoonotic risk remains limited. This work evaluates the pathogenicity, transmissibility and local innate immune response of three avian species harbouring different respiratory distribution of α2,6 and α2,3 SA receptors. Muscovy ducks, European quails and SPF chickens were intranasally inoculated with 105 embryo infectious dose (EID)50 of the human H7N9 (A/Anhui/1/2013) influenza isolate. None of the avian species showed clinical signs or macroscopic lesions, and only mild microscopic lesions were observed in the upper respiratory tract of quail and chickens. Quail presented more severe histopathologic lesions and avian influenza virus (AIV) positivity by immunohistochemistry (IHC), which correlated with higher IL‐6 responses. In contrast, Muscovy ducks were resistant to disease and presented higher IFNα and TLR7 response. In all species, viral shedding was higher in the respiratory than in the digestive tract. Higher viral shedding was observed in quail, followed by chicken and ducks, which presented similar viral titres. Efficient transmission was observed in all contact quail and half of the Muscovy ducks, while no transmission was observed between chicken. All avian species showed viral shedding in drinking water throughout infection.  相似文献

The nutritional characteristics of buckwheat starch were studied to identify the possibility for reduced postmeal metabolic responses to various buckwheat products. The in vitro rate of starch hydrolysis and resistant starch (RS) formation in boiled buckwheat groats and in a series of breads, baked with 30-70% of buckwheat flour (BWF) or groats (BWG), respectively, were evaluated in vitro. In parallel, postprandial glucose and insulin responses and also the satiety score to BWG and wheat bread with 50% BWG as compared with the reference white wheat bread (WWB) were studied in healthy humans. The highest concentration of RS was found in boiled BWG (6% total starch basis). The RS level in bread products based on different proportions of BWF or BWG (30-70%) varied from 0.9 to 4.4%. The rate of in vitro amylolysis was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in all buckwheat products in comparison with the reference WWB. The calculated hydrolysis indices (HI) were lowest in boiled BWG (HI = 50) and in bread with 70% BWG (HI = 54). Consumption of boiled BWG or bread based on wheat flour and 50% BWG induced significantly lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses compared with the WWB. The calculated glycemic and insulinemic indices (GI and II) for boiled BWG were 61 and 53 and for the buckwheat bread, 66 and 74, respectively. The highest satiety score was found with boiled BWG. It is concluded that buckwheat has potential use in the design of foods with lower GI properties.  相似文献
