The Argentine ant Linepithema humile (Mayr) established in Algarve, Portugal, about 120 years ago. In this work we assess the current impact of this invasive species on ant communities of citrus orchards and compare the invasibility between different ecological sub-regions in relation to some biotic and abiotic requirements. A novel extensive sampling approach in citrus canopy (including the trunk) along 49 orchards in three ecological subregions was performed. In total 21 species were observed, covering 81% of the species reported for the region. Despite the same habitat, ant species composition differed in contiguous subregions with particular significance to the absence of Argentine ant in the inner subregion. Based on the results we hypothesized the existence of ecological factors at regional scale preventing the establishment of L. humile in this subregion, related to anthropogenic factors and geologically unfavorable sites. At a local scale, its establishment and dominance is associated with ant community composition and a lack of dominant native ant species, which can be responsible for straightening the spread of one of the world most invasive ant species. 相似文献

Fish introductions, particularly in areas of high biological diversity and endemism, represent a major threat for biodiversity. In the Balkan Peninsula, 60 fish species have been introduced to date, of which 36 have become naturalized in inland waters. Since the Balkans are one of the world's 35 biodiversity hot spots, this large presence of alien fish species poses a serious threat for the stability of freshwater ecosystems and the survival of the native ichthyofauna and of aquatic biodiversity in general. The motivation for the introductions, and the historical timeline, varies among the Balkan states. Despite recent attempts to implement and align legislation aimed at preventing the introduction of potentially invasive species, and the implementation of rigorous controls of introductions and increased protection of open waters, the majority of current introductions remain intentional, primarily via aquaculture. This review article provides a historical overview of freshwater fish introductions, the motivation behind them and the current distribution of alien freshwater fishes in the Balkans. The ecological implications and future perspectives concerning alien fish species in the region are also discussed. 相似文献

The isotopically labeled compounds [5,6-(2)H(2)]-(Z)-1, 5-octadien-3-one (d-I) and [1-(2)H(1;2),2-(2)H(1;1)]-1-octen-3-one (d-II), as well as the unlabeled reference compound (Z)-1, 5-octadien-3-one (I) were prepared by improved synthesis procedures. Labeling position, chemical purity, and isotopic distribution of the compounds were characterized by various MS and NMR techniques. These molecules are used as internal standards in quantification experiments based on isotope dilution assay. Due to their bioavailability, glycosylated carotenoids may have interesting biological effects. Sioxanthin, as a representative of this type of carotenoid, has been identified in marine actinomycetes of the genus Salinispora. This study evaluates, for the first time, the effect of cultivation temperature (T) and light intensity (LI) on the total cellular carotenoid content (TC), antioxidant activity (AA) and sioxanthin content (SX) of a crude extract (CE) from Salinispora tropica biomass in its vegetative state. Treatment-related differences in TC and SX values were statistically significantly and positively affected by T and LI, while AA was most significantly affected by T. In the S. tropica CE, TC correlated well (R2 = 0.823) with SX and somewhat less with AA (R2 = 0.777). A correlation between AA and SX was found to be less significant (R2 = 0.731). The most significant protective effect against oxidative stress was identified in the CE extracted from S. tropica biomass grown at the highest T and LI (CE-C), as was demonstrated using LNCaP and KYSE-30 human cell lines. The efficacy of anaesthetic tricaine methanesulfonate (MS‐222) was evaluated in four freshwater aquarium fish species, Zebrafish (Danio rerio), Guppy (Poecilia reticulata), Discu (Symphysodon discus) and Green swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri). The correct dose of anaesthetic should induce the plane 4 of anaesthesia in less than 180 s, recovery in less than 300 s and must survive when exposed during 30 min to anaesthetic. Fishes were exposed to six concentrations of anaesthetic (75, 100, 125, 150, 200 and 250 mg L?1) and the time of fish reaching plane 4 of anaesthesia, post exposure recovery, and the percentage of survival when fish were subject to 30 min in the anaesthetic were recorded. The optimal doses varied according to the species: D. rerio – 75, 100 and 125 mg L?1, P. reticulata – 125, 150 and 200 mg L?1, S. discus – 75 and 100 mg L?1 and X. helleri – 125 and 150 mg L?1. The induction time generally decreased significantly with increasing concentration of MS‐222 for all of the species evaluated. The recovery time had a tendency to increase with the increase of the MS‐222 concentration for D. rerio, P. reticulata and S. discus. On the other hand, X. helleri recovery time decreased with the increase of MS‐222 concentration. MS‐222 proved to be effective in anaesthesia for all the freshwater ornamental species studied. The main results clearly show that the optimal dose to anesthetize is fish species dependent and it is completely wrong to extrapolate optimal anaesthetic concentrations between different species. 相似文献

Rice oxalate oxidase genes (OXO) may play a role in resistance to Magnaporthe oryzae. Genome analyses showed four tandemly duplicated OXO genes, OsOXO1–OsOXO4, which mapped to a blast resistance QTL in chromosome 3. These genes have >90% nucleotide and amino acid identity, but they have unique gene structures, conserved motifs, and phylogeny compared to the 70 other members of the cupin superfamily in the Nipponbare genome, which were divided into several classes. In resistant and susceptible Vandana/Moroberekan advanced backcross lines, only OsOXO4 was expressed during rice–M. oryzae interactions, and its expression increased earlier in resistant than susceptible lines. The earlier expression of OsOXO4 in resistant lines correlated with a 26-bp promoter insertion containing an additional copy of the bacterial responsive nodulation cis-element. Our results showed that OsOXO1–4 are in a separate class of rice cupin genes and supports a role for the promoter variant of OsOXO4 in resistance to M. oryzae. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Developing resistant cultivars requires an understanding of the dynamics of the pathogen populations as well as the genetics of host resistance. Bacterial leaf blight (BB), caused by the vascular pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, has become one of the most devastating diseases of rice. We demonstrate here the quantitative analyses of responses of near-isogenic lines carrying various BB resistance (R) genes and R-gene combinations against 16 X. oryzae pv. oryzae isolates representing Korean BB pathotypes. The estimated main effects of each R gene against the 16 isolates identified prominent differences in BB pathotypes between Korea and other countries. Three major aspects of our quantitative observations and statistical analysis are (i) strong and broad resistance of xa5; (ii) independent and additive genetic actions of Xa4, xa5, and Xa21 under digenic or trigenic status; and (iii) a strong quantitative complementation effect contributed by the functional alleles of Xa4 and Xa21. We conclude that the pyramid line containing genes Xa4, xa5, and Xa21 would be the most promising and valuable genotype for improving Korean japonica cultivars for BB resistance. 相似文献

Degradation of sown pastures in the neotropics is a well known but poorly documented phenomenon. The paper reports the results of a survey conducted in the eastern savannahs of Colombia to quantify farmers' reactions to perceived pasture degradation. The survey was conducted in an area of 23 644 km2. The sample consisted of 46 farms, which had 19 012 ha of Brachiaria decumbens pastures distributed in 374 paddocks. Of these paddocks, 196 had been sown with vegetative seed, and 281 had received modest rates of P fertilization at planting. Pastures sown on flat lands had younger modal ages (three years) and were renovated more frequently than those sown on hilly or dissected savannahs (10 years). These differences were probably a result of variations in infrastructure and relative stage of development of the two topographies, but slight differences in inherent soil fertility may also have played a role. We found no relationship between grazing management and frequency of pasture renovation. Implications for future research on pasture reclamation are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The five Regional Fishery Management Organizations dedicated to tunas (tRFMOs) are all either developing or implementing Management Strategy Evaluations (MSEs) to provide advice for the stocks under their competencies. Providing a comparative overview will help tRFMOs to learn from one another and to collaborate on common solutions and may also help to more clearly define the challenges of building decision support tools in contexts of large scientific uncertainty and where management requires cooperation across multiple stakeholders characterized by unequal power and divergent interests. For example, our overview showed that in most cases, a grid‐based design with an emphasis on structural uncertainty has been adopted. However, uncertainties such as sampling errors and non‐stationarity of important ecological processes, which are of potentially equal significance for demonstrating robustness of management procedures, were not considered. This paper identifies key issues for operating model (OM) design that challenges the tRFMOs, compares how these challenges are being met, summarizes what lessons have been learned and suggests a way forward. Although the current approach of using assessment models as the basis for OM design is a reasonable starting point, improvements should be made to the conditioning of OMs, especially with respect to enabling the inclusion of other important processes and uncertainties that are difficult to account for in stock assessments but that can crucially affect the robustness of advice. Attempts should also be made to improve documentation and communication of uncertainties that are included and those that are excluded from consideration in the process. 相似文献

The correlation between intensity of lipid peroxidation and changes in antioxidant capacity of sugar beet plants (cv. ‘Drena’) infected with Rhizoctonia solani Kühn isolate (AG 2-2 IIIB group) was studied. Successful inoculation was confirmed by the presence of infection cushions in a cross section of leaf petioles. On the 7th day of the experiment, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL; EC. 4.3.1.5) activity was in negative correlation with intensified lipid peroxidation process in leaves of sugar beet plants (r= –0 .99). Also, in leaves and roots of inoculated sugar beet plants, total flavonoids content (35% and 20%, respectively) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-scavenging activity (80% and 55%, respectively) were significantly reduced. Necrotic processes resulting from R. solani infection of sugar beet plants was followed by induction of plant phenolics metabolism; however, antioxidant capacity of these plants was reduced. 相似文献
